The WoW Factor, page 2

1.The average age of WoW players is:
Correct answer: c - 30
Surveys of MMO players have consistently put the average age of MMO players right around 30. This includes our survey, as well as a survey of EQ2 players and an earlier survey of WoW players.
2. Which of these groups of players is most likely to be gender-bending?
Correct answer: d – older men
Men are 4 times as likely as women to gender-bend in WoW. The older a male player is, the more likely they are to gender-bend.
3. When you meet a female character in WoW, what's the likelihood that it is being played by a man?
Correct answer: b – about 50%
By extrapolating on the gender base rates in WoW and the different likelihoods of gender-bending between men and women, we found that about 55% of female characters are played by men, and only 5% of male characters are played by women.
4. What's the most popular race in terms of character creation?
Correct answer: a – human
The elves are popular, but the humans are most popular. The Warcraft Realms Census also confirms this.
5. When comparing achievement scores, which category do older players tend to focus on the most?
Correct answer: d – professions
Younger players have higher PvP and dungeon achievement scores. Older players have a slight preference for world events, but they have a strong preference for professions. This may be linked to more solo, casual forms of playing due to less flexible playing schedules.
6. Do female players give out more hugs (i.e., the /hug emote) in game than male players?
Correct answer: c – female players give out more hugs
Women hug twice as much as men do in WoW.
7. You can fall to your death in WoW, and the armory keeps track of these. Which of the following factors is most highly correlated with a player's number of falls to death?
Correct answer: a – Arathi Basin BG participation
While both personality measures are correlated with falling to death, Arathi Basin BG participation is a much stronger indicator.
8. You can calculate someone's "neediness" by dividing their number of need rolls by their total number of rolls. Do you think younger players are more likely to roll need?
Correct answer: b – no difference
No age or gender differences were found in terms of need rolls. Interestingly, we did find a cultural difference. Players in Hong Kong and Taiwan were twice as likely to roll need as players in the United States. It's not clear what's driving this difference, though.
9. Which two classes below are most favored by men?
Correct answer: d – death knights and rogues
Men heavily prefer warriors, death knights, and rogues. Women heavily prefer warlocks and hunters.
10. People often assume that women prefer to play healers. Do you think there's any truth behind this claim?
Correct answer: b – no difference
We categorized character roles by their class and spec. Men are more likely to be tanks and melee DPS. Women are more likely to be ranged DPS. But there is no difference when it came to playing a healer in the United States.

I think they took you a wee bit too seriously.
But you should know better that there are different jokes for different crowds, and this is a crowd that(for the most part) doesn't find this kinda joke funny.
And seriously guys. None of you have ever told a blond joke, cultural joke, a sexist joke, an ageist joke, a religious joke before? I suppose when someone turns on Comedy Central, you frown and leave the room? Hate Family Guy and South Park?
VioletArrows Dec 22nd 2010 6:05PM
@Dave: No I haven't and yes I do (especially for Family Guy and American Dad dear god there's a lot of suck there), because when you're bullied and on the butt end of jokes constantly until nobody takes you seriously or cares, you start to go, "wow this is shitty, I wouldn't wish this on other people".
Of course, empathy's dying art.
Dave Dec 22nd 2010 6:31PM
Violet- Humor doesn't show a lack of empathy. There are appropriate times and places to show either. Laughing about something is humor....it's when you stop joking, or take it too far, that you cross a line.

Damn, it's been a whole 45 minutes since I've seen that bingo square trotted out on an internet comment thread. Congrats for coming in right on time with that mindblowing insight. And a hint about comedy: if it can be copypasted from Uncle John's Bathroom Reader or the book of jokes that got passed around your school bus in middle school, it's probably not funny.
But hey, women be shoppin'!

I'm male, a chef in real life ... and so is my (female) main :D

I don't see how your religion is genetically ingrained into you.
And I sincerely hope that Family Guy is satirising crude stereotypes by channelling them through an oaf. Though after watching the Cleveland show I'm forced to conclude that's true.
Anyway, the worst thing about sexist jokes is that almost without exception, they'd get a "hurr" from someone with a double digit IQ in the 1960s. Since then their quality hasn't improved an iota.

As a girl who does indeed enjoy cooking (and maxes out every profession possible in WoW regardless) I wasn't offended...I just didn't find it funny. Maybe that's why he's being downrated?
We don't have to think a comment is "ZOMG OFFENSIVE TO MY GENDER HOW DARE YOU!!111" to downrate it. I just didn't think it was that quality of a comment. It was basically "Hurr hurr old joke about women cooking that is as old as time." Not particularly clever nor creative and didn't really contribute anything to the discussion. *shrug*

Unless there is a grill involved. Then the men can carbonize the meat whilst chestpounding and spewing testosterone
Oh, I'm sorry Whitfield, you were joking?

Gordon Ramsey's food is actually quite text book plain. I have eaten at two of his restaurants when he was in the back and the food was good, consistent, but....meh. Difference between British and french chefs I guess. Brits are all about marching in line, making the plate look exactly like it would if you looked the dish up on foodipedia. Frenchies have imaginations and will take risks to surprise their clients, not always in a good way, but usually interesting!

Wait... 30 is average age? People MY age? Wait a minute... how can I continue blaming the current status of Trade chat on "those **** eleven year olds"??
My whole world feels like it's been turned upside down....
CloakedDrifter Dec 22nd 2010 3:20PM
well, i think the next question to ask would be which age group is more likely to talk in trade... or better yet, which age group is more likely to troll in trade. my view is that even though the average age is around 30, these players are generally more respectful in trade chat. i could be very wrong, but this is my hope, and it would allow you to maintain the target of your blame.
Feezee Dec 22nd 2010 3:23PM
@phephe
The people who are tools in trade chat and cry on the forums are a vocal minority. The average age of a wow player may be 30, but the demographics of that vocal minority subset of the wow playing population will probably be quite different.
Iirdan Dec 22nd 2010 3:29PM
Age is irrelevant.
The people who troll trade chat and are generally vulgar are likely evenly dispersed among all age groups; it's a maturity thing, and maturity is not linked to age inherently. Every age group will have its immature members, and of those immature members, some are going to be vocal.
People just like using "12 year olds" because it's catchier and more stereotypical than "immature people of any age group".
Rihahn Dec 22nd 2010 3:38PM
It's an effect called 'vocal minority'...
Five bad 11 year olds out of the 5000 people on your server is extremely noticeable due to the bullhorn that is the trade channel. Trade chat unfairly allows a couple people to monopolize intellectual bandwidth, mostly because the signal to noise in the channel on most servers is so low to begin with. This of course makes the remaining 4995 'normal folks' on the server essentially invisible because they either don't say anything in trade, or have it turned off.
If you can get even 20 people in a channel to discuss something intellectual, the 'bads' will go elsewhere due to the decreased volume they have.
This is how it works on Wyrmrest Accord most of the time, at least on the red team - our trade chat is typically something like a discussion of the socio-political pressures Garrosh is under or the implications of the battle for Gilneas as seen by the general Forsaken population. Occasionally we'll get an influx of new players who want to do the rectal linking thing, but they tend to get drowned out pretty quick and life resumes as normal.
Saitenyo Dec 22nd 2010 3:44PM
@Rihahn You make me want to join your server.
Mir Dec 22nd 2010 4:05PM
Iiridan: Age is most definitely NOT irrelevant. It's true that trolls can be of any age, but the distribution is definitely skewed to the younger players. Alot of people my age don't even "get" trolling. It doesn't bother me in the slightest as I have much more important things in my life to worry about, and if you want to look like a tool go ahead and have fun...I just don't understand the appeal at all.
If you want an analogy, trolling is like driving. I experience bad drivers every day coming from all ages and backgrounds, but there is a definite reason why 16 year old males pay a hell of alot more for insurance than I do.
Skrotus Dec 22nd 2010 8:09PM
If I were to guess, I'd say most of the trade trolls on my server were late teens to late twenties. They're immature attention seekers sure, but that doesn't actually imply any particular age.
Pcan Dec 28th 2010 12:24AM
Heh, this is the first time commenting on a wow post. I'm fairly close in age to the average wow player based on this survey. But here's my thing about Trade chat and people telling jokes/acting like kids. I work in the steel industry and it's fairly demanding physical work. When i get home, i like to unwind by hopping on wow and having fun (sometimes being flat-out goofy). In the guild that i'm currently in, i guess i would be seen as a jokester, but that's the cool thing about wow, you can be anyone, a jackhat in trade chat, or just someone that likes to joke around and unwind after work.
As to the trolling, it's lost on me as to the entertainment value, but oh well, different strokes for different folks i guess....
