The WoW Factor, page 2

1.The average age of WoW players is:
Correct answer: c - 30
Surveys of MMO players have consistently put the average age of MMO players right around 30. This includes our survey, as well as a survey of EQ2 players and an earlier survey of WoW players.
2. Which of these groups of players is most likely to be gender-bending?
Correct answer: d – older men
Men are 4 times as likely as women to gender-bend in WoW. The older a male player is, the more likely they are to gender-bend.
3. When you meet a female character in WoW, what's the likelihood that it is being played by a man?
Correct answer: b – about 50%
By extrapolating on the gender base rates in WoW and the different likelihoods of gender-bending between men and women, we found that about 55% of female characters are played by men, and only 5% of male characters are played by women.
4. What's the most popular race in terms of character creation?
Correct answer: a – human
The elves are popular, but the humans are most popular. The Warcraft Realms Census also confirms this.
5. When comparing achievement scores, which category do older players tend to focus on the most?
Correct answer: d – professions
Younger players have higher PvP and dungeon achievement scores. Older players have a slight preference for world events, but they have a strong preference for professions. This may be linked to more solo, casual forms of playing due to less flexible playing schedules.
6. Do female players give out more hugs (i.e., the /hug emote) in game than male players?
Correct answer: c – female players give out more hugs
Women hug twice as much as men do in WoW.
7. You can fall to your death in WoW, and the armory keeps track of these. Which of the following factors is most highly correlated with a player's number of falls to death?
Correct answer: a – Arathi Basin BG participation
While both personality measures are correlated with falling to death, Arathi Basin BG participation is a much stronger indicator.
8. You can calculate someone's "neediness" by dividing their number of need rolls by their total number of rolls. Do you think younger players are more likely to roll need?
Correct answer: b – no difference
No age or gender differences were found in terms of need rolls. Interestingly, we did find a cultural difference. Players in Hong Kong and Taiwan were twice as likely to roll need as players in the United States. It's not clear what's driving this difference, though.
9. Which two classes below are most favored by men?
Correct answer: d – death knights and rogues
Men heavily prefer warriors, death knights, and rogues. Women heavily prefer warlocks and hunters.
10. People often assume that women prefer to play healers. Do you think there's any truth behind this claim?
Correct answer: b – no difference
We categorized character roles by their class and spec. Men are more likely to be tanks and melee DPS. Women are more likely to be ranged DPS. But there is no difference when it came to playing a healer in the United States.

This was very interesting, very cool article! A lot of things in here, I had long thought were probably true but never have seen them given as statistics before.
(I got 8/10 right!) :)
Thanks again, great idea.

Even though I'm a girl playing girl characters with girl names, I find other players often say "he" when addressing me, lol. Probably because there are so many dudes playing girls : /
On the flip side, when someone tries to get frisky, I always tell them I'm a dude XD
I find myself in the minority among girls I guess because tanking and melee DPS are my fave roles.
Some of these answers were surprising.
Draelan Dec 22nd 2010 3:27PM
I agree. Tanking is fun! Though I'm more the type that, if I'm not tanking, I want to be DPSing at range, so I guess that part is true with me. =)

I wonder if the fact that the average woman has less spatial reasoning ability than the average man might factor into this. Positioning is highly important in melee DPS and tanking, less so in ranged DPS and much less so in healing. I find melee DPS extremely difficult as I have trouble keeping myself in range of mobs and not being overwhelmed by what's happening around me when on the rogue or warrior, while my mage and resto shaman can handle anything I need to do. Obviously, statistics aren't destiny, but even a small innate preference will cause noticeable effects in a population as large as WoW's.

@AMy
Interesting point but i highly doubt spacial ability comes into play when you are at the char generation screen :) Since most ranged DPS are chosen by class and not spec (Mage Lock hunter) I think we can call that theory busted.
Straz Dec 22nd 2010 6:14PM
I think most people create a class of character with a particular role in mind. I think there may be merit in her thought though. Studies have shown that women do have lower spatial awareness than men. I don't see why that wouldn't translate into role selection while playing a game that relies heavily on such skills.
She's right though. WoW's population is large enough where a correlation (if there is one) can be made.

I have to say when choosing my rogue I never even considered positioning or role. I just always play rogues. She is still my main and I my only toon above 80.
I've quested with her, PVP'd with here and raided with her.
Hunters, mages and healers just don't have the same draw as my little rogue :D
Guess I'm not a typical girl /shrug.

I get called "he" a lot too. Even after they see my female toon, and hear me in vent, I still get amusing comments like "Girls play warriors?" and "Isn't Drrum a guy's name?"
VioletArrows Dec 22nd 2010 3:25PM
I always wondered about the whole humans being the most popular thing in WoW. While it's easy to see why humans are the most popular race in nearly any multi-racial/species game, here they're also constantly regarded as the most ugly (or rather outdated and unpolished).
Draelan Dec 22nd 2010 3:25PM
"...and only 5% of male characters are played by women."
Looks like I'm part of the weird little group of women that has no issue playing male characters. (Although, my main is female, I swear every new toon I roll lately is male.)
VioletArrows Dec 22nd 2010 3:39PM
I find that I only really roll males when I find the females of a race less attractive than males (so far only blood elves and draenei; feel free to go wtf).
Saitenyo Dec 22nd 2010 3:54PM
Yeah i have a pretty varied mix of both male and female characters. I just go with whichever gender I prefer the look of for that particular race.
I always find it interesting what motivates people to choose their character appearance. Some people pick what they're attracted to, some pick what they want to look like, some pick what they do look like....and I always just pick whatever I think will make an interesting character.
My main is an old bearded black guy. I'm amused by how often this throws people off...being that I am actually a young blonde girl. I'm an artist and I just like designing my characters based on what I think would be interesting to draw. So many of the human looks were the typical fantasy lore European. I picture my mage to be this wizened, stoic type that better represented his wizardly skills than your typical sword-swinging norseman.
Desuka Dec 23rd 2010 4:38AM
Likewise to Draelan, I play both male and female characters, though I have more female ones than male.
It's usually for a few different reasons that I pick male or female when making a new character: a mix of the idea I have for their background/story, what names I have in mind, what race/gender combos I already have, how interesting the race's customization options are... (coughblargatfemaleworgencough).
wollsmoth Dec 23rd 2010 11:08AM
I'm in that category too. My main's a male, and my new alt I made to roll with my friends is a male night elf warrior. Is this some kind of commentary on my mentality? :D
Also I picked my main's appearance to be as ugly as possible, because then my friend would have to be seen with me :)
Tri Dec 22nd 2010 3:27PM
This surprised me a lot! In fact, I only got 4 correct. :O

Regarding question 8 My first thought was, aren't most gold farmers in Asia? Could this be related, am I the only one that thought that?
Drakkenfyre Dec 22nd 2010 4:59PM
Gold famers are in all nations.
The game is region-locked, those Chinese gold farmers can't get the gold to you. So when you have one whispering you, the gold is on that server. However the person doing the whispering or the body-spamming might be in Asia. But they can also be in your own country.
That's why when there are news, for example, of the game going back up on China, people making comments about "gold sellers on the rise" are stupid.
vocenoctum Dec 22nd 2010 4:11PM
The thing most often forgotten is that the people selling you gold... are on YOUR server. So sure they might have farmers over there, but they'll be playing on US servers anyway.
uncaringbear Dec 22nd 2010 6:06PM
Every time I see someone correlating Asians with gold farmers, I want to punch a penguin.
arixian Dec 22nd 2010 6:14PM
I'm not saying it is every fair to stereotype and I have no doubt that there are farmers all over the place, with the media coverage focusing on the Asian gold farms that was the first thing that came to my mind. Since I've never purchased gold and use a spam blocker addon I don't really have the best grasp on the process and how it works.
