I never quite understood why humans were so popular. I mean, I spend so much time being a human when I'm running around in real life, why be human when I play a game?

I think that one factor might be familiarity. For me, WoW was my first MMO. When I was first creating a character, there were several knobs to tweak and a lot of things that I didn't know about yet.
Choosing a human reduced some of the unknowns for me (or at least I thought I did). Because the race was more familiar to me, I made the assumption that there would be things about it that I could take for granted. So choosing a familiar race was my way of trying to reduce the amount of "newness" that I was exposing myself to.
My second toon was a gnome, and my third toon was a night elf. But my first toon, which happens to be my main, was a human.

I know...without a different appearance, I just feel like WoW is all shooting fireballs and killing dragons, like my regular human life. Blue skin? Now it feels like a fantasy. ;)
