I wonder if the fact that the average woman has less spatial reasoning ability than the average man might factor into this. Positioning is highly important in melee DPS and tanking, less so in ranged DPS and much less so in healing. I find melee DPS extremely difficult as I have trouble keeping myself in range of mobs and not being overwhelmed by what's happening around me when on the rogue or warrior, while my mage and resto shaman can handle anything I need to do. Obviously, statistics aren't destiny, but even a small innate preference will cause noticeable effects in a population as large as WoW's.
