The Queue: Steam tip

If you're at all like me, you're fully entrenched in Cataclysm right now. But that precious honeymoon is only going to last until February or March, at which point it'll slip into the daily regimen of raiding and running the occasional spurt of dungeons some random night. It's at that time that I turn to other games, and that's where this little tip comes in. Go download Steam and spend $20 on a few games to play while waiting for raids, etc. ... Enjoy them in a few months knowing you paid next to nothing for them, thanks to Steam's insane sales.
I normally don't go all fanboi for another game or services like this, but seriously, you're doing yourself a disservice if you're not spending a few bucks on these games. The other day, I picked up a $50 current-generation FPS for $6, and I spent $8 at Taco Bell (chili-cheese burritos).
Now back to The Queue!
Dalixam asked:
Whenever you finish a project, the next one pops up right away. Is this completely random or does something influence it?
Completely random. Any sort of rhyme or reason you're hearing about it is just people looking for patterns in the static. The only thing that is true is that there'll be four dig sites per continent.
Dalixam asked:
If you are working on a project that needs for example 32 artifacts, what happens if you continue to pick up artifacts when the bar says 32/32? Are those artifacts lost or are they stored and used on your project?
Those artifacts are saved, and you'll see your bar say something like "40/32" or whatever. A really smart way to go about things is to just dig up artifacts until you reach 100 archaeology, and then solve everything you've got. The reason here is that at 100 points, you no longer get skill-ups from finding an artifact; you only get skill increases for solving a project (5 points, at that).
Foxish asked:
What's up with the order of factions in the reputation pane? It's a little annoying to have to minimize Wrath and BC reps before I can see Cataclysm reps.
Yeah, that's exceptionally annoying. You can mark the other reps as inactive to get them off the main list, but still, it's a bug that hopefully Blizzard will fix in the next client patch.
Vanillabean asked:
I have seen a lot of hate for this expansion, and I don't get it. What is so bad about it??
The people who don't like things yell the loudest, and that's what you're seeing (on the internet, that statement makes sense). There are some legitimate concerns about the expansion -- something needs to be done to make pugging heroics more accessible, Tol Barad is broken pretty badly, and there've been a lot of issues with phasing in some of the 80 to 85 zones.
But overall? It's pretty good.
The ones who would normally counter the yelling and screaming of the haters are too busy playing right now.

@The Queue:
If a person gets the Cataclysm trial and buys Old World Flying (they CAN do this), what happens when the trial runs out? Do they lose the skill? Does it just stop working automagically? Do they still get to fly?
trefpoid Dec 23rd 2010 1:11PM
I'm assuming it just stops working till you buy the expansion.
SR Dec 23rd 2010 1:14PM
I doubt it, since Old World flying is available to level 60s as well. Blizzard has been saying that they're trying to make the 80-85 zones and the new races to be the Cataclysm feature.
kerrick.wow Dec 23rd 2010 1:35PM
A friend of mine got the trial and wasn't able to purchase the flight license at 80. I vaguely recall hearing that old world flying was for Cata owners only.
Aris Dec 23rd 2010 1:37PM
I think it's only available to 60's if you have Cataclysm, though. Pretty sure I read multiple times that Old World flying was a Cataclysm feature. That's why we didn't get it when the world broke and we could by 310% flying. Given that, I'd say they'll lose it but regain it back if they purchase Cataclysm.
Jawn Dec 23rd 2010 2:38PM
Yes, old world flying is available to lvl 60s. I have it on all of my 60s.
trefpoid Dec 23rd 2010 2:50PM
It is a Cataclysm-only feature. Before I bought the expansion, the trainer didn't show me any new flying to learn. When I purchased the expansion, the flight master's license appeared. So I'm pretty sure you won't be able to fly after the trial expires.
TheBlob Dec 23rd 2010 4:00PM
@Jawn: No you don't. To get Old World Flying, you have to have Cold Weather Flying, which means they have you be at least level 68.
And I imagine it will magically not work, kind of like if you made a death knight with the Wrath trial, you just couldn't log into that character until you bought the expansion.

"@Jawn: No you don't. To get Old World Flying, you have to have Cold Weather Flying, which means they have you be at least level 68."
Nice of you to flat out call someone a liar...but I'm fairly sure you're wrong.
Kuro Majutsukai Dec 23rd 2010 4:20PM
Having bought Flight Master's License with my level 62 Death Knight, I can confirm that it does NOT require you to have Cold Weather Flying.
Klerud Dec 23rd 2010 4:23PM
@TheBlob
Well that's plain wrong. Level requirement for Flight Master's License is 60, and Expert Riding (150% flying). About the Cataclysm/No Cataclysm, I have no idea.
PvtDeth Dec 23rd 2010 6:42PM
@ cutaia
TheBlob is wrong in saying that jawn is wrong but saying someone is wrong is not the same thing as calling them a liar.
Newbs Dec 23rd 2010 8:31PM
PvtDeth:
Actually, Jawn stated that he had old world flying on his 60's, to which TheBlob said "No, you don't" I'd say that TheBlob is pretty much calling him a liar with that statement, which is pretty rude, especially since TheBlob is himself wrong.
Ronin Dec 23rd 2010 8:47PM
@ PvtDeth
TheBlob didn't say that Jawn was wrong. Jawn said he had Old World Flying on his 60's, and TheBlob said, "No you don't."
If that's not saying someone is lying, I don't know what is (short of actually using the phrase "you are lying", which can be implied just as easily as made explicit).
Tenjin Akuma Dec 23rd 2010 8:56PM
If the Cataclysm trial is anything like the BC trial was, once the trial runs out you won't be able to use your account at all anymore.
Here's to hoping I get Cata for Christmas >_>

LOL! Account, no, but toon, yes, this recently happened to me and I found it quite amusing ... I logged out at 60.99 in Hellfire and then after the trial expired when I tried to log back into that toon WoW would crash - every time (I tried at least 10 times). I had to hop on another toon and open a ticket requesting that toon be moved to the old world so I could log on to it!
SR Dec 24th 2010 3:27PM
Why'd I get blacked out lol
Firecrow Dec 23rd 2010 1:07PM
Who's side is Manastorm on? He helps one expansion and hinders the next...
Nina Katarina Dec 23rd 2010 1:11PM
PLEASE tell me I get to kill Millhouse Manastorm in some raid, somewhere down the line. Please.
Aquaroko Dec 23rd 2010 1:14PM
Well he -helped- break out of his own jail cell. Turns out there was plenty good a reason to keep him locked up.
