Spiritual Guidance: Pre-raid gear guide for holy and discipline priests

So you've gotten your priest to level 85 and now you want to get geared up to heal raids, huh? Not sure what dungeons to run or what tabards to wear? Not sure where to start or too lazy to go to Wowhead and find out the information yourself? Spiritual Guidance is here for you! This week I'll be listing off all the gear you can get your mitts on before you can get into raids.
Before we get started, you should know that when you first hit 85, you'll only want to run a handful of normal dungeons to get your average item level high enough to queue for heroic dungeons. Those normal dungeons are Grim Batol, Halls of Origination, and Lost City of Tol'vir. The other normal 5-man dungeons only drop 308 and 316 item level gear. Once you can queue for heroic dungeons, you'll see level 346 gear in all the dungeons. Normal mode raid gear is 359, but you can get a handful of 359 gear without raiding, either through crafting, reputation, or drops. Got that? Okay, let's get to the priest-specific stuff now.
Some disclaimers before we start. First, I won't be including any valor point gear in this list, because though you can get valor points from doing the heroic daily, you won't really find yourself with a significant amount of points to spend just getting ready to raid. I'll include those items in my raiding gear list later.
I also don't recommend any resilience gear. This is because you can't reforge resilience into usable stats for PvE. We'll tackle PvP and resilience gear at a later date, but feel free to spend any extra honor you have laying around to get yourself raid-ready. Just remember that the honor grind is horrific nowadays, so if you want to PvP later, you may want to save your honor for something you'll actually use in PvP.
Check out the Cataclysm professions for priests guide for information on profession exclusive gear.

The new factions all have tabards, just like in Wrath; with most factions, you can do a few quests to get friendly reputation, then grind out a good chunk of your reputation in dungeons using a faction tabard. (If you need help getting the tabards, Shy at WoW wrote up a nice guide for finding each faction vendor.)
If you do all of the available quests for each faction, you should typically get to honored, so it's not a bad idea to go back and do any quest zones you skipped. With Therazane, it's very easy to get to revered just doing the introductory quests and one to two days' worth of dailies. The Tol Barad factions are the only factions you can't get a tabard for, so you'll need to do dailies within the zone to get your reputation up. You can get to exalted much quicker depending on how often your faction wins the battleground, since extra dailies unlock when your faction controls the peninsula. The commendations you need to buy gear, you'll get plenty of while grinding up your rep.
If you didn't figure it out just by examining the list, the first Cataclysm reputations you'll want to grind out are with Guardians of Hyjal, Therazane, and the Earthen Ring. Hyjal and Therazane in particular have helm (Arcanum of Hyjal) and shoulder (Greater Inscription of Charged Lodestone) enchants that you're going to want if you're planning to raid.
Archaeology
If you're into archaeology, there are also a handful of 359 items you can assemble. The trinket in particular is amazing, but there is a lot of luck involved in the entire profession, so you could try for ages and never get what you want. You could also get what you want the first time you assemble the lot of fragments required to make whatever it is you're after though, so if you intend to go after any of the following items, good luck! Selecting gear
As for what gear you should take, some of this stuff has spirit, some of it doesn't. My advice is to get as much spirit gear as you can, until you no longer feel like mana is a huge issue. This should happen with some new trinkets and mostly 346 gear. If you want to be extra precautious for raiding, stick to the spirit gear -- but remember that if the item level is higher, it's generally an upgrade, so don't keep a spirit item for a higher-iLevel intellect item. Intellect is the stronger stat once mana is no longer an issue.
For secondary stats, disc priests want a balance of all three secondary stats (you can consult the 101 guide if you haven't already). Holy priests should avoid taking too much crit and work at getting 12.5% haste. (I'll explain why later this week in holy 101.)
This wraps up the priest pre-raid gear guide. I'm still tidying up holy 101, but you can expect it toward the end of this week before we close out the year. Take care, and as always, hit the comments if you have any suggestions or questions.

Please add to wrists: (SFK heroic) Baron Ashbury's Cuffs (spirit/mastery) http://www.wowhead.com/item=63437 Otherwise great article.

Huh... sorry for all the errors guys. The article was supposed to go up on Monday, and I was supposed to have time to comb through it before then. I submitted it for editing this morning and I forgot to tag it Monday, so I guess they pushed it live. I'll go through and clean up all the mistake links and add a few of your suggestions in the next few hours. Thank you.
Jaxrc55 Dec 26th 2010 1:21PM
You linked a plate helmet in the 346 helmet options. ^^
Jaxrc55 Dec 26th 2010 1:25PM
You're also missing Mantle of Loss from Lord Godfrey in SFK for shoulders. ^^
Nadia Dec 26th 2010 1:31PM
There's a plate helm in there.
Also, there's a cloth hat that drops in SFK:

couple of alternatives
cuffs
Bloodthirsty Gladiator's Cuffs of Meditation - 1250 h PVP vendor, not terrible in pve and slightly better than the quest ones.
Since you listed the JC ring, there are 2 JC trinkets which are not terribly difficult to farm and create, but they are mighty nice
Figurine - Dream Owl
Figurine - Jeweled Serpent

Regrettably, Biting Wind is a dagger and not a wand. The Wand of Untainted Power remains the only choice for spirit wands.
Darkdust Dec 26th 2010 2:24PM
I've never run a "dugeon". :p
In seriousness, though, good list. I've been working through Frostheim's similar list for hunters and will keep this handy when my priests (yes, plural) get to 85.
Bril Dec 26th 2010 4:39PM
Gurgthock's Garish Gorebat from Crucible of Carnage is 333 with spirit.

Relatively easy to get.

Not sure if its been said yet Dawn but you linked Biting Wind, which is a dagger, in the Wand section

I love the way you laid this out.

what kept the Emberstone Staff from making the cut?

I was so excited to win the Emberstone Staff the other day in Heroic DM. It was the very first blue I ever got in WoW, on my priest way back in Vanilla, so getting the heroic version was awesome =)

good list, but you missed all the shadowfang keep drops, almost every boss has a spirit gear drop for healing

Many will scoff at my comments, but I for one find it incredible that we are already talking about top end gear and max raiding. The expansion is barely 3 weeks old. Why can't we just enjoy the subtleties and nuances of the expansion for awhile and, learn the quests and experience the new zones in a more meaningful way, and try new classes, professions and a myriad of other things available before worrying about gearing up for endless raiding and who has the best purples? I for one, am still enjoying the great new quests in all the starting zones. None of my many characters is even close to 85 and I am in no rush to get there.
On behalf of all the more hardcore hi-end raiding enthusiasts I say thanks for your great writing and the wisdom of your experience Dawn. I venture to guess, however, that many of the rest of us long for articles that might suggest tips/guidance on better ways to heal a lowbie 5 man dungeon, or what gear, talents and skills would be best for a Priest that loves low level BG matches.
Like I said many will scoff at these comments, but I want to be on record that not all of us live to raid! But hey, it's my 2 cents.
Merry Christmas all and enjoy the game in whatever way turns you on!
Scott Clark Dec 27th 2010 2:46PM
Play how you want, absolutely. However, I feel that your comment was disparaging against those who are playing how they want by getting to the endgame quickly.
This article was about efficiently getting your toon raid-ready. For those that do choose to focus on getting to the endgame as quickly as possible, getting the information sooner rather than later is kind of the point.
For people like yourself, who prefer to take their time, enjoy the journey, do a little bit of everything, this article will still be relevant when you're ready for it and you can search the archives. As well, articles like those that you're asking for are "evergreen" - they will always be relevant to anybody leveling alts or taking their time on their mains, regardless of when those areticles are published.
To those looking to gear up to raid in the early days of the expansion, an article on gearing up is only relevant in the early days of the expansion. Those players can't search forward into the archives; they get it on the front page here or they go looking elsewhere. If Dawn were to follow your advice, and rush to publish articles for those players who are specifically interested in not rushing, she would cater only to those players looking to power-level to the midgame. Do such players even exist?
Bleeding-edge information has a Best Before date. Those players who don't need bleeding edge information will, by definition, still be interested next week.

On 10 mans, healers must sustain around 8-10k healing trough the fight. Its usually not problem to heal so much, but having mana to heal so long. So ideally every slot should have a gear with default spirit in it. Haste is really dangerous stat - faster healing means more mana used. If you can choose, try first some spirit+crit/mastery gear. If end of fights you got spare mana, you can change some pieces to haste. Dependent how you must heal, mastery can be from really good to really crap stat, crit is more safe and prefered way way to increase troughput.
