The Queue: Repeat Christmas header

I don't care that we used this header last year. An orc in a Santa hat -- it's the best.
Sanctis asked:
I got an Amazon Kindle for Christmas (I will now read a "book" for the first time in 3 years). What Warcraft books do you recommend for me to start with? I haven't read any of them.
Start with The Shattering! It serves as an introduction to Cataclysm, and we gave it a pretty darn favorable review. If you've been playing Cataclysm and thinking, "Hey, why exactly is Magni Bronzebeard dead and Garrosh Hellscream the new Warchief?" then The Shattering can help fill in those blanks.
Dvyvin asked:
Is there any lore background given why Thrall is the only one holding up the world?
He actually isn't! There are powerful shaman like Muln Earthfury and Nobundo at the Maelstrom as well. They're just on different rock pillars. You seem them during a Twilight Highlands cinematic.
Tanglebones asked:
Is it okay to use a staff (I'm looking at you, Staff of Sorcerer-Thane Thaurissan) as a caster shaman? Do caster shamans benefit from the armor on their shields?
Mace/dagger plus shield/offhand is pretty much the way to go for elemental shaman, because staffs have a lower total item level budget than a mainhand/offhand combo. Plus, there's a +100 intellect enchant for offhands and shields now, and you can't really make that up with a staff. Lastly, the extra armor from a shield can definitely help in an emergency situation when caught in a Boooonestoooorm or something like that.
That said, using a staff is fine as a stopgap measure, especially if the staff has better total stats than the lower iLvl mainhand/offhand combo you're currently using. Just use your head.
Ca9je asked:
Is there a way to avoid the lack of choices with your characters anymore? Three talents now, you can't be a hybrid of two, and you will find that only after avoiding all PvP talents you have completed the talent tree with no where else to spend your talents in it. Rotations are therefore not changeable, as with everybody having the same talents, there will always be one that works the best. How do I gain freedom with my class?
You're looking at this from the wrong angle. There was always a "right" talent distribution, and not speccing that way was just handicapping your character. Rotations were never really changeable -- not if you wanted to be an effective player. And being a two-tree hybrid usually just meant taking advantage of a gimmick that Blizzard hadn't fixed yet.
What Blizzard has essentially done is made all of your DPS talents obvious and attainable. When you're done filling in those talents, you have points left over. This is intentional. All of the remaining talents are where you gain freedom, not lose it. Give yourself a little survivability boost. Improve your mana regen for long fights. Become more effective on add fights. It's up to you.
Stop thinking about the remaining utility talents as "PvP talents." It's an outdated view. Those points don't have anywhere else to go; you're not missing out on some important DPS talent by picking them up with leftover points. You're just making yourself more effective in a pinch.

Lorewise, the most fitting classes are:
Orc: Shaman/Warlock/Warrior
Tauren: Druid/Shaman/Hunter
Forsaken: Rogue/(Shadow)Priest/Death Knight
Blood Elf: Mage/Warlock
Goblin: Rogue
Human: Warrior/Priest/ Paladin
Night Elf: Druid/Priest/Hunter
Worgen: Druid/Warrior/Rogue
Dwarf: Warrior
Gnome: Engineering??
Draenei: Mage/Priest/Paladin

Shamanism is something that's not practiced widely in Draenei culture. Shaman are not quite outcasts, but looked upon as different. If not for Velen and a few other notable Draenei embracing it, it wouldn't probably be seen at all.
Lorewise, the class that would win over Shaman would be Paladin.
Sunaseni Dec 26th 2010 4:53PM
Warrior: Troll
Warlock: Troll
Mage: Troll
Priest: Troll
Druid: Troll
Rogue: Troll
Hunter: Troll
Shaman: Troll
Death Knight: Troll
Paladin: ...Troll

Im not actually up on Draenai Lore, to be honest. Those are just my opinions as to what would suit each race best, no need to get hostile and nerd rage.

I like the lore of Tauren warriors. Give an angry bull a polearm and it just yells "Cairne Bloodhoof" to me.

Wait...um...Sunaseni...what about, oh I don't know, trolls?
Oh, and why are you recommending trolls when you have a belf icon? Hmm????????? I mean, seriously, what's that about? Hee hee hee...

my favorite race/class combos -
orc - warlock. they are the most famous warlocks.
troll - shadow priests/hunter - ive always wanted a shadowhunter hero class, but i guess i'll have to keep waiting.
blood elf - mage. they are the first mages on azeroth (or at least descended from them.)
tauren - hunter/druid/shaman - take your pick. these all fit their society and lore perfectly.
undead -lock/shadow priest/DK - any class that humans can be. the fat that undead cant be pallys, but can be priests, makes zero sense to me.
goblin - rogue - i dont know why, but this just makes sense to me.
human - paladin - the first pallys on azeroth, even though humans are ugly and worthless, i will give credit where it is due.
dwarf - shaman - the induction of the wildhammer finally gave dwarves their signature class.
nelf - mage/druid - they were the first of both on azeroth. (sorry cow droods)
gnome - rogues - something about being an ankle biter = rogue. (see goblin)
draeni - pally/priest - they invented the light.
worgen - ??? - idk who cares about werewolves anyway?

Actually i think that Orcs make the best death knights seeing how they were the first death knights.
icepyro Dec 26th 2010 11:49PM
Why are goblins rogues? Nearly all the goblins I've fought since I started playing WoW have been variations of mages/shamans. Seriously, I'm trying to remember a rogue goblin I've had to deal with. Okay, maybe it's more likely than a gnome rogue that is a npc. Still far more magic goblins than not.
As pointed out, player draenei are more likely to be priest/paladin than other classes.
Undead =/= DK. Sorry, but they are whatever humans are, except DKs. DKs should be Orc (original DK after all) or Human.
Trolls are spriest/hunter.
As pointed out belfs would be arcane mages or even paladin (using Sunwell) or locks (many changed to fel energy to supply their fix) before fire mages.
Nelfs are warrior/priestess for females, druids for males.
Dwarves are probably more likely to be paladins than warriors, though not by much.
Shaman just made a big comeback for dwarves the same way mages did for nelfs. So hard to say. A new toon would likely be those, older toons, not so much yet.
Otherwise, not a bad list.

@darky
Arthas was the first death knight?
ZeroDesu Dec 27th 2010 5:46AM
@Eli: No, he wasn't. Technically, you could make the argument over whether Orcs or Humans were the first death knights.
"The original death knights were created for Orgrim Doomhammer by Gul'dan as powerful soldiers of the Horde. These death knights were created by placing the souls of the slain warlocks of the Shadow Council into the corpses of fallen Stormwind knights, the first of whom was Teron Gorefiend."
Read up a bit, yeah? http://www.wowpedia.org/Death_knight#Lore

Dear Queue,
Is there any way to go back to the maelstrom and chill with Thrall after doing the Deepholm starting quest?
Sir Broose Dec 26th 2010 10:36PM
I have wondered this, as well. I fear the answer is no, but if anyone knows any different, I hope they speak up here.
zweitblom Dec 27th 2010 5:59AM
There's an Earthen Ring quest chain starting at Earth Caller Torunscar in the Twilight Highlands that sends you back there - however, the situation you will find Thrall in is rather more chilling than chill...

Why won't any of these Gilnean or Wildhammer emissaries (or their Horde counterparts) in the capital cities talk to me? I'm accustomed to having battleground emissaries tell me I'm not high enough level, but these particular ones won't talk at all to *any* of my toons, of *any level. A mouseover shows the "talk" cursor icon, but clicking gets no response at all.
