I actually worried about it being cliche: overlooked guy goes on a rampage and then regrets it, but I couldn't ignore Cellophane and rogue together.

The gnome thing had nothing to do with anything, at least from the creation standpoint. The reason he's a gnome is because my husband's rogue is a gnome, and it was the only high-level rogue I had access to. It could have just as easily been a night elf or a worgen or a human (for the Alliance!).
