Battle for Gilneas video with strategy commentary
I mentioned in this week's Blood Sport that I'd soon have a video up for you guys. Well, it came sooner than I expected, as everything worked out splendidly. All together, it only took me a few hours to record video, record audio, patch both together, convert files, and upload to YouTube.
For our first PvP video together, we'll be discussing adventures in the Battle for Gilneas with my favorite affliction warlock. This is actually my third rated battleground ever -- in the first two, I was demonology in back-to-back Twin Peaks. The games weren't particularly exciting (we 3-0 capped both games), and there were some recording errors in each.
I don't have any listening music for this one; you can pick your own! If Windows Movie Maker allowed me to throw down an audio track, you'd probably be hearing Deadmau5. However, as a consolation, there is commentary from yours truly for 14 minutes and some change!
In this episode, I talk about:
- disparity
- 10v10 team compositions
- Battle for Gilneas strategy
- a helpful tactic not many teams are using right now
- myself (unfortunately for you, bwahaha)
Note: I talk a lot about 15v15 early on in the video to quickly explain even distribution. I understand Battle for Gilneas is a 10v10 and am just making points about distribution and disparity.

Dantis,
I just logged into WoW and typed: /stealth Qiraji mount epeen flex
It told me: Type '/jealous' for a listing of a few envious comments.
I kid, I kid.

Thx so much for the video and instruction... so are you saying prot wars are really only useful as flag carriers, not so much for defending nodes?
C.Christian.Moore Dec 28th 2010 2:42PM
Lsprof4,
I prefer warriors to be non-protection specs when we're in battlegrounds other than Warsong Gulch or Twin Peaks. Defending the flag can be useful with the amount of stuns protection warriors have access to, but it's usually more useful to have another high damage dealer to complement others on both defense and offense.
Protection warriors are useful for defending flags (we had our protection warrior at the mine the entire time in this video), but we would have preferred him to be Arms for this particular battleground.
Hope this helps,

I watched the entire video and listened to all the commentary. That isn't what he said about prot warriors. He was referring to them having a dual role and being able to switch to the other role depending on the need of the team.

Internetz high-five for the Deadmau5 song that you weren't able to post! His new album was the driving force behind my 80-85 push!

Drayzen,
I feature him in this article, if you're interested:

Good commentary. Covered lots of strategy and wasn't too boring or technical so you didn't lose your audiences attention.
Do you have a preset group of 2 dps and healer and they move as a team and you add dps as needed when you take over other nodes or is the group put together on the fly?
With rezzes and deaths I'd assume on the fly, but I've had issues trying to do that, play, and direct everyone at the same time.
Advice, thoughts (I play a hpally fyi)?
C.Christian.Moore Dec 28th 2010 2:43PM
Adam,
It's largely on the fly. We try to not have two healers at the same location unless we absolutely need to (opposing team is pushing max players to an objective and we want 2/3rds of our team to stay and defend).

I'm so happy to know I'm not alone in obsessive Overworld Map Checks.
Thank you for the video, it's good to see the new maps done up by someone who cares about the content and strategy. Also, that Dual Spec trick is incredibly clever, I will make note of that for when my shaman finally gets to 85.

I hope you do record and post ventrilo next time. It would be interesting to hear how you coordinate as battle is occurring.

just a quick tip thing I noticed, near the beginning when they were zerging waterworks, a frost Mage came over and used ring of frost but you could only see the fog or mist from it. enabling projected textures will let you see the huge rune on the ground it makes, and this will also apply to abilities like a dk's death and decay. After 4.0 I noticed I couldn't see those anymore and it took some fiddling with the video settings to find out what actually needed changing.
C.Christian.Moore Dec 28th 2010 4:16PM
Powatodapeople,
I just enabled the projected textures. Thanks for the heads-up!

One quick tip on the audio: When you have a very syllabant voice, this means you accentuate your "S's" (this not the same as a lisp), putting in a low-pass filter with a cut-off around 2-4k can really help take the edge off. This will help a lot more with lower quality mics found on the most common headsets which really tend to wreak havoc on syllabant voices.
That's one way of helping to improve the audio without going out and spending money on a better mic.
C.Christian.Moore Dec 28th 2010 4:15PM
Chris,
Thanks so much for this helpful comment. I'll work on getting that done...now just to figure out how to add a low pass filter.

Can you pass this info along to Sacco for the podcast?
JK Sacco love ya! XD

Interesting commentary, thanks for the video!
Every time BfG pops in my random horde always lose =[. I was beginning to think that it's somehow unbalanced towards alliance...But, haha I guess not!
Also I don't enjoy this type of 3-base bg (perhaps because I'm scarred by the expirience of tol barad). I feel it's more hectic and difficult to defend a flag than say in Arathi Basin with its 5-bases, since there is a lot more zerging going on in BfG and TB.
Ronin Dec 28th 2010 7:53PM
What? You didn't add a soundtrack set to max volume, of music you enjoy and therefore you assume EVERYONE else enjoys? Don't you know that you lose Internet Cool Points when you don't take every opportunity to remind your audience how badass you think you are?
Ur doin it rong! And I like it!
gosubilko Dec 28th 2010 8:15PM
Gread video. I hope there's more to come. I always liked the strategy part of BGs more than the micro management style of Arenas. The commentary was fine and as said above it wasn't too technical that it made me stick to it to the end. Very enjoyable.
If ever you're going to post vent audio over your next vid, you can just use popups to commentate on the fly.
