Battle for Gilneas video with strategy commentary
I mentioned in this week's Blood Sport that I'd soon have a video up for you guys. Well, it came sooner than I expected, as everything worked out splendidly. All together, it only took me a few hours to record video, record audio, patch both together, convert files, and upload to YouTube.
For our first PvP video together, we'll be discussing adventures in the Battle for Gilneas with my favorite affliction warlock. This is actually my third rated battleground ever -- in the first two, I was demonology in back-to-back Twin Peaks. The games weren't particularly exciting (we 3-0 capped both games), and there were some recording errors in each.
I don't have any listening music for this one; you can pick your own! If Windows Movie Maker allowed me to throw down an audio track, you'd probably be hearing Deadmau5. However, as a consolation, there is commentary from yours truly for 14 minutes and some change!
In this episode, I talk about:
- disparity
- 10v10 team compositions
- Battle for Gilneas strategy
- a helpful tactic not many teams are using right now
- myself (unfortunately for you, bwahaha)
Note: I talk a lot about 15v15 early on in the video to quickly explain even distribution. I understand Battle for Gilneas is a 10v10 and am just making points about distribution and disparity.

I like the video and appreciate it as someone trying to get back in to PvP after being away from the game and then from his main character for a good while. I thought it was well done, and the only suggestion I would have would be a higher resolution version.
Two questions:
How did you get the see through map on screen?
Would you be open to a request for a video?

Why do you address and sign each of your comments like a relatively formal email? Seems a bit out of sync culturally.
Also, you might try recording the commentary using Audacity, overlaying appropriate music (AOL would probably want it not to be infringing, heh) and using that as your audio track.

Darkdust,
Just habit I guess due to formal work environment / schooling. Audacity seems like a great idea, I'm just not sure how to get Audacity to recognize vent recordings. I could definitely do that for a commentary-only edition though (and probably what I should have done here).
Thanks for the comment. No formal signature, just for you. :)

You'd have more burst if you used the Shadow Trance procs that are happening throughout the video which you didn't seem to use. :-)

Grendelstein,
Getting used to the Blizzard Power Auras is difficult. :D

This is the first of many videos I think I'll see in the future! The tactics involved sound awesome! If this becomes more tournament base, with several cameras, would be cool hehe

What's the name of the addon minimap that's kind of transparent in the lower right? That's awesome!
ethansanderson Jan 8th 2011 1:09PM
How do you get that transparent minimap on your screen? That's just excellent.

Ethansanderson,
Shift+M brings up the zone map which works in all areas (even ones other than battlegrounds), although it's arguably most awesome within battlegrounds.
Mods like Capping can increase the size of the zone map.

I run with the smaller map (shift+m) but in the video, there's a small box in the lower right of the screen that's semi transparent... what addon is that pls?
C.Christian.Moore Jan 8th 2011 4:28PM
Ethansanderson,
The small box in the lower right of the screen (that shows objectives and whatnot) is just the zone map (shift+m) moved and tuned to a lower opacity. If you're talking about another semi-transparent box, I'm not sure which one it is.

Ah, I see. I thought the shift-m thing only made the map smaller when you hit the M button. (like a shortcut for the little diagonal arrow that makes the map smaller). I see now that the minimap is different, thanks.

A strategy that should be considered for this battleground in Rated BG's is a 1-4-5 setup. First off, compose your team as you see fit, 7 dps and 3 heals is good. The strat works as thus (Horde perspective): 1 person will cap mines out of the gate and defend it. 4 will go to Waterworks and 5 will go to Lighthouse. The reason for this is because this strat is specifically designed to counter zergs or overmatches. In other words, most teams send the bulk of their force to Waterworks out of the gate while capping the base closest to them and leaving minimal defense there. The 4 that go to Waterworks are tasked only with slowing the cap of that node (if they end up capping it themselves then great, but this is not the main objective). The 5 that go to Lighthouse are tasked with quickly overwhelming it's defense and capping that node. The 4 that went to Waterworks will rez at Mines when they die (there will be no other gy to rez at at this point). Now you have 5 defending mines and 5 defending Lighthouse, holding and defending these 2 nodes until victory. If the bulk of the enemy force zergs Mines instead of Waterworks, it will be easy for those 5 heading to Lighthouse to recognize and atleast 1 person should be designated to break off and assist with the capping of Waterworks (ie, reverse the capping strat, capping and holding mines and waterworks instead).
