Breakfast Topic: Does your guild bank need a cataclysm?

What does your guild bank look like? Is it a dumping ground for anything, or is it well organized? Do your officers clean out the bank periodically, or do you have a single person who lovingly (or compulsively) takes care of your bank?
When guild banks were first introduced, we accepted anything -- "You never know when someone might need it!" was our motto. But there are thousands upon thousands of "useful" items, and as hard as our mules tried, it quickly spiraled out of control. I love organizing things, and this grated on my nerves until I finally asked my guild leader if I could "adopt" the bank. You wouldn't believe how fast he made me master banker!
Now our bank is organized and maintained. Guildies can find what they need, and we know what to resupply. Our guild coffers have grown as I've vendored or auctioned all the items people donate that we can't (or won't) keep. Sure, it takes time, but it makes me happy and directly benefits the guild.
But what I really love are these times of transition, as an old expansion ends and a new one begins. It's a time to reevaluate what we stock and try to forecast how our needs will change. I have spent the last six months culling the bank and trying to figure out how to fit a greater number of items into a finite amount of space. I eagerly await the seventh tab and dream of some day unlocking the eighth. Imagine the possibilities!
Now that we've seen the new mats and guild achievements, including the new bank tabs, how are you managing your guild bank for the new expansion? How do you manage it now, and is that changing with Cataclysm?
| Total chaos | |

| First tab, great! Others ... not so great | |
| Fairly easy to navigate | |
| Neat as a pin |

Here's a topic for ya!
"How often do you clean your bags?" Starting with: My wife usually cleans her NE priest's bags every saturday...
siimmart Dec 29th 2010 8:12AM
Or, "Do you vendor all your trash?" or even a whopping "Do you say hi to people when you log on?"
Exciting.
siimmart Dec 29th 2010 8:16AM
Oh! Here's one!!
"Do you like to eat sandwiches while playing"? Mm?
Or even better, "What color is your mousepad? Do you like it?"
"Do you like gearscoring/ vanity pets?"

Good sir, may I suggest anger management courses. I hear they are pretty cheap for the effort they do to you.
You want to have artsy-pseudo-intellectual conversation at 8 am?

Whoa buddy, who farted in your Froot Loops?

Dude, the few people on this floor that actually bothered to show up to work today, just turned around and stared at me when I burst out laughing. Consider that phrase well and truly adopted.

Cleaning bags? On my main, I just whip out the ol' traveler's mammoth and I'm good to loot. My alts can get away with less vendor visits because they have less junk in the bags.
Vendor trash? Of course. ...well, except for the twill set. I have to fish in style, ya know?
I don't say hi when I log on. I like to be sneaky like that. That said, I will reciprocate to any greetings I get.
Sandwiches? Hell no. My keyboard collects enough pet dander and hair that I don't need to add crumbs or oily residue from peanut butter, mayo, avocado or other condiments.
My mousepad is black. Simple, not distracting but, most importantly, it doesn't slide around while the top surface allows subtle mouse movements.
No, GS is annoying and conveys very little regarding the player's skill or attitude.
I'm on the wall with vanity pets. While raiding, please put them away but everywhere else, sure, what the hell. I'll bring out my baby smolderweb spider.
Oh, and as for my personal guild bank, first tab is shared with a friend and is quite messy but the other four tabs are neat as can be. If only I could keep my house looking that nice.

I sense a trend of people being angry at the breakfast topic. Call it a hunch. Let me assuage your problem. Step 1. READ the title. Step 2. If you don't like the title STOP reading. Step 3. If you are not sure go back to Step 1. If still not sure go ask someone for Assistance. I hope this helps you angry breakfast topic readers. If you are an angry WoW insider reader of another column feel free to use this step process to help you overcome your anger and move on to more productive things. Be excellent to each other and...party on!

Well, before Cataclysm my personal guild bank was pretty neat, but now it's trapped on a server I am (slowly) moving my characters from and I don't really know what to do with some of the stuff in it (it was neat and organized, but FULL) since I can't really afford to liquidate it unless I level my last character I will likely xfer for a while to 85 before I do. And some of it I want, for alt professions and the like (the reason it was originally in there, other than the fact that I'm a virtual hoarder :p).
On my new server I need a Gbank bad. I've been donating most of my new stuff to the guild guild bank but a lot of what I need room for it the stuff I brought over that my guild doesn't want. I just don't relish buying all those tabs again. I really wish they had a way to transfer that, or at least rename guilds (I would be a lot more open to selling my old guild bank if I wasn't selling someone my name / you know, it weren't full).
As for the guild guild bank, it's nice and neat, we have good officers.

I was able to get my guild's name change via a GM ticket. It took several days since it wasn't an urgent issue by any stretch of the imagination, but once they had time they simply did it with a smile and didn't give me any grief about it!

@Swifteye
I know I'm just sending myself an email and you may or may not see this but thank you, I will at least give that a try, I just assumed it wasn't allowed since there is no in-game way to do it and I've heard tickets being denied for it.
Doesn't hurt to try though, I might get a nice GM
Swifteye Dec 29th 2010 9:07AM
I think the tickets being denied depends on your reason for changing. I bought my guild bank from someone else who was leaving the server and explained in the ticket that I simply didn't like the name, and clearly pointed out that the change wouldn't affect anyone but me because I was the only one in the guild. The GM was totally cool with it.
I think they're more likely to deny something like "yeah I chose this name but I changed my mind I don't like it now", or if there are several people in your guild (since Blizz can't really ask everyone if they're okay with it). Your reason sounds... uh... reasonable (dammit that sounds stupid but it's the word I want >.

*shakes fist at comment system's archaic HTML fickleness*
Curse you, comment-eating bracket symbol! I shall have my revenge!!
... anyway, was just gonna say "so I don't see why they'd have a problem with it" or something to that effect, heh.
Noyou Dec 29th 2010 11:47AM
Yep. I had one of my guilds names changed too. I was also paranoid about buying it from someone as it could have been a hacker selling someone's guild. Long story short it wasn't and the name got changed. The key thing to remember when dealing with GMs/tickets is use decent language (don't be or sound like a douche). As long as you have a semi reasonable request and can put a sentence together without using "Dude, Bro, and l33tspeak" you should be ok.

I'm the bank officer for a medium sized guild, 3 years old. We're now level 7 or something. Anyway, point being, we get alot of junk. Eventually someone had the idea of having the first tab deposit only and every other tab withdraw only. This allows everyone to dump stuff into the first tab then you can sort things into their place.
We still get alot of junk, and half the stuff i get i just toss. One guy keeps putting greys and single pieces of linen cloth in there. Sigh. But its much easier to sort through one tab than 5 or 6.
I also regularly DE things, and we started putting blues (rares) in with green quality weapons. This helps somewhat.
About every six months I just take every single thing from the bank and post it on the AH for 3 rounds. Whatever is not sold is either put back in the bank (ie if its a rare or really useful) or just vendored. I vendor alot of nice stuff but nobody wants it. Shrug. Only so much room.
This is far from perfect but i can't get anyone to actually use the gbank, and i'm just as guilty. Plus nobody reads the guild forums so any pleas fall on deaf ears.
Stephanie Dec 29th 2010 11:57AM
I was going to write my own post but yours is everything I was going to say and worded better than I could put together at this time (my eyes are still being sleepy unfocused).
I wanted to add though that due to bank clutter we only keep superior or epic gear - that is if a green is put in (first tab only - did that one ages ago) it is taken immediately out. Also, whenever someone puts in a grey, they and I get to have "the talk."
The Talk is friendly and all, but I mean, really John, if you don't want this crap why do we?
Ice Dec 29th 2010 8:25AM
Addon called Bankstack puts bags and banks pretty cleanly in order with press of button or /sort guildbank!
But also moves items from tab to tab so if you want only food on one its not really gonna do that..but works on bags and personal bank more. ANYWAY..
If by guild bank you mean "My alt that has 6 tabs on guild bank and is my bank alt" then yes.. I really have to sell these items someday. Yes, it would be just easier to just cataclysmically destroy the guild bank and forget it. Its gonna take years to try sell 6 tabs and bank full of stuff and the gold wouldnt be that much compared to the time used..but I still need the gold.. pretty badly.

Marie,
I love you. Would you like to join my guild? Or marry me?

I just completed Set the Oven to Cataclysmic solo, and moooost of the South Island Iced Teas went into the bank. We now have drinks to last a lifetime. Yay!
I sometimes shuffle things around to make it a bit neater if I have a spare minute or two, but usually it's utter chaos.
My JC alt's bank however is perfectly organised. He had a lot of BC jems left over after getting to 450, so it's organised into rainbow colours ^.^
Faridoon Dec 29th 2010 8:41AM
The guild bank did need an overhaul, that is, until my OCD tendencies turned into the quartermaster position in my guild. I still could another tab (we're saving up for it) but it's a heck of a lot more organized than it was.
