The Queue: In short

Today's edition of The Queue is a little shorter than I generally like it to be. I like it when The Queue is meaty. Something you can really sink your teeth into. Unfortunately, yesterday's edition of The Queue was all Tol Barad, all the time. Discussion is nice and all, but there's not much you can do with that in a Q&A feature.
Narshe asked ...
Is it possible to request a name for a character if the name is currently taken by a low level if it is unused?
Last I knew, yes! You can petition a GM to free up a specific name. If the character is under level 10 and hasn't been logged in for a long time, the GM can free it up for you. They are not obligated to do so, but they can. I was able to get one of the names I really wanted this way.
Be warned, the GM just frees up the name. They don't give it to you. If they free up the name you want and you take your sweet time creating the character, someone else can snatch it out from under you.

When are the prizes for these giveaways being sent out? I'm kinda curious.
It's going to take awhile. We gave away more prizes during this year's 12 Days of Winterveil than we've ever given away for anything. We need to contact all of the winners, wait for all of the winners to get back to us with their shipping information, then we need to haul all of the prizes to FedEx to be shipped. FedEx stores are not fond of your showing up with nearly a hundred packages, either. I wonder why!
I'm not saying, "Don't expect your prizes any time soon." I'm saying, "Don't expect your prizes too soon."
Travis from Blogatelle asked ...
When, oh dear Lord, when are we going to get a new comment system for WoW Insider? This one is oh so very frustrating.
Soon. With a trademark.

"FedEx stores are not fond of your showing up with nearly a hundred packages, either."
Not true! We love it when you show up with that many packages. Especially at the beginning of the year. :D
It's the folks behind you in line who might be a little impatient.

Well if that's the case then I need to mail $1000 worth of pennies individually boxed to the other side of the world.
Don't loose count now!

Why do people insist on spelling "lose" with an extra "o"?
Not to be a grammar Nazi (so to speak) but this has to be one of the most annoying spelling errors of our trans-literate 21st century.
Bernie Roscoe Dec 29th 2010 1:04PM
Studies have shown that due to the "O" key's proximity to the Backspace key, it tends to be the stickiest key on the keyboard. In fact, some scientists go as far to say that anyone who makes a grammatical error with the "O" should be exempt form the haughty eye of the self-righteous.

@paragorillabear
I can only speak for myself, but I make many comments on my phone and the auto correct sometimes messes things up. Not sure if that is the case here, but just giving the benefit of the doubt.
The ony that bugs me is dual and duel. I don't know how many times someone asks in trade chat to dual outside of SW or people ask if I had duel spec. I usually say "No I am Prot spec, I didn't know there was duel spec"
chrissie Dec 29th 2010 1:09PM
I thought it was supposed to be a pun on loose change....
Angus Dec 29th 2010 1:12PM
Your "o" key is sticky from the proximity to the backspace...
...suuuure.
ahem.

It is simple misunderstanding of language. Back in old country, we refer to coins as "loose change." It is common for such things to be rolling around and lost. So simple phrase is to not be losing valuable packages by "loose count" so many packaged coins. Very simple. Is good joke, yes?

In Soviet Russia, pennies lose you!
Sols Dec 29th 2010 1:47PM
I really don't think the poster "insists" on spelling it "loose".. it was probably just an honest mistake.
And I really don't think saying "don't want to be a grammar nazi" makes you look like any less of one.
I'd suggest trying to add productive comments to threads from now on. Take your rants over to the first grade spelling bee where you can bask in your own, radiant glow.

People that use too many O's don't bother me much.
It's all those pesky Rouge players that get to me.
Kakistocracy Dec 29th 2010 2:18PM
As a pedant, I'd like to point out that he/she/it was a spelling Nazi, not a grammar Nazi. Unless misspelling/punning "lose" is a morphological issue...
Scooter Dec 29th 2010 3:47PM
Actually folks, "chrissie" was correct in his/her assumption. It was meant as a joke.
With regards to "paragorillabear", It's because people are multitasking and don't give enough focus to their work. Since "Lose" and "Loose" have almost identical spelling the typist will produce whichever word is used the most often by them regardless of meaning.
An interesting thing about multitasking is the brain cannot properly adapt to it. Over time the persons individual ability to focus on each task drops. We can fight this by engaging in tasks that build the ability focus instead. It's a good read if you ever find an article on the topic.
WaterRouge Dec 29th 2010 5:05PM
HEY! We people who intentionally mispell rogue as rouge because of our preference to the French language are justified!
Not that I have... *cough*
paragorillabear Dec 29th 2010 6:55PM
@ Sols
(1) By "insist" I don't mean that the op is intentionally misspelling, but that certain segments of our society (present company perhaps included) misspell regularly such words as "your" and "there" with no compunction whatsoever and no desire to change
(2) I added the comment about "grammar Nazi" to let people such as yourself know that I was merely making an observation about something I find annoying and not trying to be a self-righteous jerk.
(3) Also, I was trying to instruct, which, assuming you have had schooling and are aware, is one way to be productive. Perhaps I just saved the op from being overlooked for a job - doubtful but possible - he could misspell "lose" on an application or resume and be judged for that mistake.
(4) My original comment was a rhetorical question and a personal observation, not a rant. THIS is a rant.
Or possibly a diatribe.
In either case, lighten up - you'll live longer.
And overall I'm surprised no one was curious about "trans-literate."
Antonia Dec 29th 2010 7:34PM
Yeah I was going to say why wouldn't they really like the business. 100 packages at once probably sucks and all but its also big business for them.
Tokkar Dec 29th 2010 9:49PM
So if someone consistently "looses" things, is he a "looser"?
My biggest pet peeve is "would of", "should of", "could of", "might of", etc. instead of "would've", "should've", "could've" and "might have" ("might've" is correct, albeit archaic) - just because it sounds sort of like "should of" doesn't mean that it's spelled this way. It's called a contraction, when you combine two words with the addition of an apostrophe - you know what an apostrophe is, correct? That's the thing you use incorrectly when you mean to indicate a plural?
So the looser would of had lot's of coin's, aight?
And yes, I had to avoid using my backspace and correcting all of that.
OH, MY...THE ABJECT HORROR!!!
I'd best post this now before I correct it just out of habit.
paragorillabear Dec 29th 2010 10:34PM
Ha ha! Yeah, I think what's funny about this whole phenomenon of The Grammar Nazi - and I do try to keep it light-hearted - and, yes, I do understand that spelling errors are almost, technically, not grammar errors -
is how vehemently angry people will become in decryng those of us who try to correct and instruct.
Sorry, I can't help myself...
But I promise i'll try to be gentle.

In many cases of internet based correction (certainly the most vocal cases), the corrector acts for his or her benefit, and not to improve the corrected. I cannot speak to your motives, paragorillabear, but authorial intent notwithstanding, most people will react defensively when corrected on the Internet. Phrases like "Why do people insist...", however jovially meant, will do little to alleviate this predisposition.
Next year in Valhalla.

I don't recall seeing this asked yet.
Does guild reputation give discounts when you buy guild rewards? For example, 20% if someone were exalted with their guild, and purchasing heirlooms.
Next question, does the goblin racial discount work for guild items?
