The Queue: The name game
Welcome back to The Queue, the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Anne Stickney will be your host today.
Everyone's talking about names, so have a little Tiny Toons for your day. When I was a kid, I always wondered why they skipped Plucky's name. Anyway, after yesterday's Queue, we got a whole mess of questions about names, so let's get to it.
Sir Broose asked:
When Cata was still on the horizon, I read comments from people who said they had "reserved" a certain name for their worgen or goblin. How is that done, exactly?
Easy! Create an alt, name it the character name you'd like to reserve. Then delete that alt just before you make your new worgen or goblin, make your new character really fast, and presto -- name's yours.
GrumblyStuff asked:
What happens to toons that lose their name by someone else requesting it? Are they deleted or will they just be greeted with a screen to pick a new name and they're right back where they were left?
The latter. It's just like logging in after you've paid to have your name changed or if your name has been reported and the GMs flagged you for a name change. I've requested a name be freed up for me before, and the GM quite nicely did so -- but they informed me that if the name I wanted was on a character that was considered "active," they wouldn't be able to do anything for me. So GMs aren't just wandering around changing people's names at whim, don't worry.
Okay, that's enough questions about names. Moving on ...
Pyromelter asked:
What happened after Deathwing landed on Stormwind and knocked over the statue? Did he just fly away? Did a bunch of heroes drive him off? Was there a mustering of guards there to attack him? Do we even know why he didn't do more damage?
Not really, no. The statues in front of Stormwind represent the Alliance forces that went through the Dark Portal after the end of the Second War. Some of the guys immortalized in stone -- Khadgar, in particular -- were responsible for messing with Deathwing's plans on Outland in a big way, namely by prying the metal plates from Deathwing via magical force. You can read more about that in Beyond the Dark Portal. As for the Park, I'm pretty sure the Deathwing flambé it received had something to do with the Park being a reminder of the night elves that stole the Demon Soul from him 10,000 years before.
Where is he now? Flying around randomly torching people and wondering why they're so happy about it.
cryzytenor asked:
The battle for the town in Western Plaguelands was epic! I played it on the Horde side and those quests ended on a cliffhanger. Is there a resolution to this story in the game yet?
Not yet, but it's likely we'll see it addressed in the future. Between the events in Silverpine, Hillsbrad and Western Plaguelands, it's unlikely they're just going to let the Forsaken story sit there and rot.
No pun intended.
George asked:
Is there a use for extra justicepPoints once you're in a full 346 set? I suppose you can store them for when the next tier is devalued on the next patch, but I meant something more immediate, like we used to get gems before with emblems.
Nope, there's nothing else really to spend them on at the moment. I'm pretty sure we'll see more gear available in the future, but I'm guessing they didn't want the gem market flooded the second Cataclysm went live.

Where is the epic thrown weapon? There are weapons you can buy for any class with Justice points or rep, but I don't see any thrown weapons available from any of these vendors.

If I were to nitpick, TG'd Fury Warriors don't have our fast-offhand.... that's also a 2-hander... from the JP Vendor : /

There is one that can be obtained from lockboxes Rogues obtain with pick pocketing.
Pyromelter Dec 30th 2010 1:00PM
Looks like for the first tier, you either need to be rich, lucky, or persistent. The only non-pvp epic thrown weapons are BoE.
One you get from junkboxes that you pickpocket http://www.wowhead.com/item=68162
And the other you get as a zone drop from the Bastion of Twilight raid http://www.wowhead.com/item=68608

Don't worry, we have the same problem with wands as well.
xiani Dec 30th 2010 10:59PM
Yeah, you gotta work for that. Is nice though:

I have been pickpocketing random trash in 85 instances (go sub spec to save your sanity on that) and still no joy. Got enough http://www.wowhead.com/item=63348 to start a small porn empire though!

At least there is a boss that drops a wand. There also are two 372 wands but zero 372 thrown weapons.

I loled at them skipping Plucky.
That's why it's always worth it to go back and watch Disney/Pixar/Dreamworks type movies once you're a "big kid".
There ARE jokes in there that were for your parents, intentional or not c:

Animation is not just for kids anyway, you know. I daresay that most people fall into this trap of believing that animated films are only for kids and that there is little artistic merit, which is truly a shame - Toy Story 3, for example, was one of the best films this year, and Wall-E was the best of 2008 undoubtedly.
It is always worth it to revisit animation in maturity - I can guarantee you'll find a new appreciation for the films, be it the art style, characters, or story.

Trust me, you're assuming incorrectly if you think I think 'cartoons are just for kids'.
I'm simply saying that the way they throw in some adult humor just because it flies right over the kids heads and tickles the parents has always amused me, and that this is an interesting unintentional example, vs the much more intentional ones I listed c:

Oh I know, I was just speaking generally.
intorachel Dec 30th 2010 11:33AM
You should watch Mary and Max. What a great animated film.
Sicadastra Dec 30th 2010 11:52AM
What's actually really funny about the Plucky thing is the show didn't completely ignore it. During the end credits of each Tiny Toons there was a hidden joke message, I obsessively watched for it every time. In the episode with these music videos the joke message was "Name inadvertently left out of the Name Game: Plucky." I was old enough to know why and it's stuck with as hilarious all these years.
Ah, memories....
sind1276 Dec 30th 2010 12:07PM
Yep, Sicadastra, I remember that too! That was the first thing I thought of when I saw the header.
Darasen Dec 30th 2010 12:48PM
Beauty and the Beast has one of the best of these.
Beast: I want to do something for her... but what?
Cogsworth: Well, there's the usual things: flowers... chocolates... promises you don't intend to keep...
woshiernog Dec 30th 2010 2:23PM
They did it cause he's black.

Up was a fantastic animated film and I'm very sure it was never intended for kids. I remember going to the theatre to watch it and most everyone there had kids with them. Needless to say the kids were bored and fidgeted the whole time.
I think its odd that the majority of people instantly think a movie is meant for kids if It's animated. After all, animated films were originally meant for adults. The first mickey mouse short that featured Minnie mouse had her wearing a skirt and parties.
Revynn Dec 30th 2010 1:39PM
Grave of the Fireflies - one of the greatest war films ever made and something every serious movie buff should watch at least once. Keep a box of tissues handy, it's also one of the most heart wrenching stories I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing. And yep, it's a "cartoon".
Xaklo Dec 30th 2010 1:42PM
@ lirdan, true many animations have tons of artistic merit, but then crap like "Dogs vs Cats (/2)" or "camp Lazlo" come along and messes up any legitimate animation cred.
Xaklo Dec 30th 2010 1:50PM
inb4 "Hey I love Camp Lazlo! And it won 3 Pulcinella Awards!!" You're just a hater!"
Actually this is mostly true, while I loved the creator's earlier show, "Rocko's Modern Life," I found Camp Lazlo to be severely lacking.
