Time killed them. They're the first khans of each tribe, the original founders. They died centuries ago of various causes that no doubt are perfectly reasonable ways to expect them to have died.

They haunt the place because... it's where they were born, most likely buried, and they're angry as Hell, what with being centaurs and all. Also, they're important and probably really strong-willed, so hanging on as ghosts fits.
