I have a feeling her powers are something to do with the way in which she was brought back by the valky'r. Nobody knows the reason why the valky'r have agreed to ally themselves with sylvanas. What did she offer them for their services? Do they still burn a torch for the lich king? And what happens when they raise the dead, are they simply forsaken? or are they different.....

They're simply Forsaken. Every new Forsaken character created since patch 4.0.1 is of the type raised by them. Seriously, just set aside an hour sometime and play through the undead intro quests. Well worth the time, and a good story.
