I'm pretty sure she's a (at least partial) tribute to Liliana Vess (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=205961). Their stories are different, but the name is unmistakable, and the powers are similar (in that they're both "evil".)
