MMO Roundup: Last week on Massively

| GamersFirst's predictions for the video games industry in 2011 While end-of-the-year predictions are quite commonplace amongst game industry bloggers and journalists, it's a bit rarer to see prognostications coming from game-makers and executives. GamersFirst bucks that trend with a press release outlining its forecast for online gaming in 2011. Unsurprisingly, the free-to-play publisher sees its preferred business model "taking over the video game market," as well as a massive shift to mobile gaming and digital distribution. |

| 25 free MMOs for that shiny new laptop Were you graced with a new laptop this holiday season? Are you looking to take a few new MMOs for a spin? | 5 MMOs that have gone MIA Unlike Chuck Norris, who seems to hang on as an MMO meme with insane tenacity (perhaps it's that extra fist under his beard), there are a handful of MMOs that appear to have dropped off the radar in the last several months -- if not years. Find out which highly anticipated franchises simply disappeared. |
| Massively Speaking episode 128 Massively Speaking returns with Shawn and Rubi discussing the week's biggest news, including Steam's holiday sale, the newest Guild Wars prequel novel, the Earthrise release date, our top MMO blogger list, Shawn's impressions of the Rift and DCUO betas, two listener emails and much more! |

| The movers and shakers of 2010 While MMOs are created and produced by large, vast teams, there are always a handful of personalities and representatives who stand head and shoulders above the rest in the public eye. I think the best free 25 MMOs forgot about League of Legends
KvanCetre Jan 4th 2011 2:19PM
If I understand, LoL is a game with a standard rts match set up and no persistant world.
Mill Jan 4th 2011 2:27PM
Agreed. LoL is a great game, and in terms of KvanCetre, he said MMO, not MMORPG. And you'd be surprised. LoL has an entire department based around expanding their one world to the point where it's almost on level with WoW.

@Mill
It has nothing to do with mmorpgs. Starcraft 2, Warcraft 3, Diablo 2 - none off these are mmos, and from my understanding of LoL, it exists in the same matchmaking vein.
If it was more like Shattered Galaxy, I would consider it an mmo.

MMO means massive multiplayer online, league of legends is not "massive" its online yes, its free yes, but its a very limited amount of players on a map. like starcraft like BF, like cs ect.
Now i have not tried all 25 mentioned games so i cant say if they are not mmo either, but that dont make LoL more MMO just because they might not be.

Riot Games has not released a number on the number of online users. They say it's a trade secret. Some estimates are around 10k players online at a time. That's a "M"assive amount of "M"ultiple people playing an "O"nline game.
I also see your point about having only 10 players total (5v5) in one match not being massive.
Then again the game does look more fun than some of the top 25 other free online games.

@ian
By that argument, call of duty games are mmos. There are hundreds of thousands on at any time.

Aww i thought they would mention something about Rift
Hairfish Jan 5th 2011 3:10AM
There's a link to the new Rift commercial on the article page. It speaks for itself.
Looks gorgeous, super-derivative, and like it would burn my video card to a crisp.

It's a shame about the Firefly MMO. The story did seem promising.
