The question of our own mortality is one of the defining conundrums of our existence. How do we sum up our lives? In our final moments in this mortal shell, what are the important thoughts and feelings that will play back in our head?
In this beautiful video, Bonkey attempts to answer some of that. The title is simply Looking Back. As a man lies dying on his bed, we spend three minutes seeing through his eyes. Some of the scenes are joyful and comforting, while others are a little more haunting.
This is one of my favorite machinima pieces in a while. The narrative is not complex or overwhelming, but the final theme is strong and moving. Truly, my hat's off to Bonkey for Looking Back. Hmm... didn't really do it for me. He says in the comments on YouTube that "I couldn't quite fit as much into the story as I would have liked due to the Blizzcon 2010 Machinima contest rules." While I'm not sure what that means, maybe that's why if feels unfinished. There doesn't seem to be a clear point, on the one hand, but neither is it thought-provoking enough to do well as a vid that's supposed to "make you think".
Of course, it's much easier to give criticism than it is to make a work of art ;)
One of the restrictions for BlizzCon video contest submissions is a maximum time length of three minutes, so that's most likely what he meant about not being able to fit as much as he wanted originally.
I thought it was an excellent and well thought out piece. The fragments made it all the more heart-wrenching, as we tend to fill in the gaps with our own perceptions and experiences.
My sole complaint was the voice-acting, which was wince-worthy enough at times to pull me out of the drama entirely.
Little bit of a plot twist finding out its his daughter wanting him to live and then slowly showing that his wife past away when the kids were younger. Very moving and very well made Mech. Hats off to you Bonkey. Good show.

Hmm, not what I was expecting. But in a good way. I like the first person viewpoint.

That was strong, for how easily it plugs into our own experiences. I wanted it to go a certain way and that's a good sign. Well done!

Personally I feel like the "incomplete" feeling adds to the emotion behind the film. No one ever gets everything they want done.

But overall, it was an amazing machinima.

Wow, he's pretty confident to take his kids to a level 63-ish zone.
I liked it, not sure how many Bonkey's done, but it's a solid piece of work. Very nice.

it was cool... but depressing - seems to always be the trend with machinima
