Don't panic about those WoW Magazine subscription renewal notices

We got some reports through Twitter and the tip line that current subscribers to the World of Warcraft Official Magazine had received notices asking them to resubscribe. Several people, especially those who ordered subscriptions and haven't yet received their four issues, took this to mean that their subscription had lapsed and that they wouldn't be receiving any more issues unless they resubscribed. This is not the case! We contacted Andy Salisbury, editor at the mag, and he had this to say:
So don't panic. The email was just intended as an "if you like the WoW magazine, resubscribe to it!" notice, not as a notification that you won't be getting what you paid for. Thanks to Andy for getting back to us so promptly. The email is just a reminder. Those that paid for 1 and 2 year subscriptions will get their 4 and 8 issues (respectively), regardless of timing. We're not going to hold anyone's issues hostage or anything of the sort, it's just meant to let subscribers know about renewal!

I do. It's a good magazine. Plus it gives me posters to put in my cubicle :)

It comes out quarterly, and is usually a decent read. you get a lot of developer insight. A ton of lore information that isn't in the game and it is very nicely published. It is still entertaining even though the info is usually out of date by the time it arrives.

It doesn't come out Quarterly, it's closer to semi-annual. /sarcasm
I've already decided not to renew. "When it's ready" is not how periodicals work. I have no problem with the magazine content but the schedule is a joke and every issue has been further and further behind.
We should actually be opening issue #5 this week but we've not even heard anything about issue #4. It's just ... I don't even have the words.

It's actually an excellent magazine and well worth the subscription price. It's beautifully designed and contains insightful, interesting and fun articles. As an avid WoW fan, I look forward to each issue with enthusiasm.

They're still publishing that?

This shouldn't have come as a surprise to anyone who's ever subscribed to anything before. You're always getting hit with subscription "reminders," which aren't intended to be helpful so much as suck as much money out of you as they can as quickly as possible.
Drakkenfyre Jan 12th 2011 6:53PM
Yup, I was going to make a comment "this isn't new to anyone who's subscribed to something before."
Usually you get renewal notices halfway thru your subscription, and each issue of whatever you subscribed to has five subscription cards in them, not to mention full-page ads to subscribe.

lol yes, I've gotten offers to extend my subscription as soon as three months into a year's subscription before. I'm like, come on, at least let me get halfway though before deciding if it's worth another year...

The surprising thing to me is that the emails (subject line at least) look so much like spam. The first time I got one I was positive it was a phishing attempt.

Good. I wanted one more sick poster before my 4 were up.
Izaach Jan 12th 2011 8:25PM
I brought a towel so no worries!
Mperiolat Jan 12th 2011 9:55PM
Good to know, but two things:
1.) How do we check on the status of our subscriptions?
2.) Is it me or has the price gone up? I payed 29.99 for a year and they now say 49.99 a year.
For four issues.
YIKES!
Drakkenfyre Jan 12th 2011 10:21PM
When first announced, they said the subscription was $40.
Have you actually seen the magazine? Take about half a year's worth of any other magazine. Stick them together. Remove 90% of the advertisements (while still maintaining the thickness) and increase the quality of the paper 100%.
That's what each magazine is like. If this were a one-time guide or whatever, it would be $30 by itself.

While the idea of the magazine is great, the only good thing other than the posters and something to add to my pile of collector's items (plushies, box's, etc) is the interviews.
The lore, the strategies, and everything else is old news.
My initial subscription was an impulse purchase, and I have been disappointed with all 3 issues so far. I am glad I bought it so that I would not be curious, but I'm disappointed with the timeliness of delivery and how it treats the writers. Did you know Matticus wrote for them and was never properly credited for it in the magazine?

I think I'm going to let my sub lapse. I live overseas so it's a bit more expensive for me and in all honesty I haven't really been blown away by anything. Paper is nice quality I'll give them that. Sadly mine always get a bit beat up coming overseas.

Can you ask the editor if he plans to produce the 4th edition before 2012?? I heard the world is ending....
Hoffa Jan 13th 2011 12:18AM
I still have yet to get my third issue.
Multiple e-mails, them saying they sent
out replacement issues, I won't be resubscribing...
