3 makeover suggestions for WoW's default UI

However, there are still improvements that could be made, most of them in areas that just haven't been updated in a good long while. I've got a list of three pieces of the UI that I believe could use a makeover.
Battlegrounds
Everything about battlegrounds has been changing for the better lately, with the absolutely awesome Battle for Gilneas (Nordenwatch 2.0) and Twin Peaks. For some reason, however, we are still left with the old, original battleground menu, complete with scroll bar. I am under the impression that scroll bars are nasty design, mostly because I do not have all the options present in front of me without having to do a little digging for information.
What can be done? One of the ways that I think the battleground selection menu could be improved would be to make it a little bit more like the archaeology menu, in which each battleground has an icon in addition to a plain text name. You could keep the window the same size but use icons for the battlegrounds, which open into the bottom window area to display the story, lore, and mechanics of that specific battleground.
Inventory
The bag inventory has been one of the mainstays of World of Warcraft since the beginning and hasn't changed much at all in the course of the game's life. Inventory in general is a hard nut to crack, and Blizzard has done a pretty darn good job with its inventory system. For a long time (and it is hard for me to confess), I never used a bag mod because I could easily arrange my items bag by bag on my own, never letting an addon do the work for me.
Right now, the inventory system that comes default in WoW is satisfactory. It gets the job done, but addons have been bringing some much needed customization to the party.
What can be done? One of the biggest concerns that I have when using the default inventory in WoW is that quest items are sometimes hard to find. ArkInventory, my addon of choice right now for inventory management, allows me to create a bag that places all of my quest items into it. I think the WoW inventory system would benefit greatly from a bag for quest items only, much like how Warhammer Online kept your quest items in a separate place. Not only does this cut down on clutter in your main inventory, but it allows players a little wiggle room when accepting or completing quests with a full or near full inventory. I know that I have had to drop things from my bag when picking up quest items because I forgot to sell.
The second thing that I wish the default inventory system had is an auto-combine feature -- one little button that could be pressed to auto-combine disparate items into stacks. Sometimes I have lost a ton of inventory space because I had no idea some items could be combined because they were hanging around in different bags. Auto-combine would be real nice and probably an easy addition.

Something that has always bugged me about the default player frames is the thinness of the health and mana bars in relation to how important they are as well as the size of the unit frame. Addons solve this problem, of course, but a lot of players love the Warcraft look of the default player and unit frames. I have to agree -- I still think the art is classic, and I used the defaults for a long, long time. However, having the actual plain text number on those thin bars always frustrated me, and in these days of mana conservation and watching those meters even more carefully, things might need to be thickened up.
What can be done? Give players a few options for their user frames. Maybe offer a default, then add in a thicker health/mana bar version for players with less-than-perfect eyesight or who just like a more manageable health bar. I know that Blizzard can purposefully leave out a lot of options due to the prolific number of addons out there that serve this purpose, but the default player and unit frames have always been a sore spot for me.
What do you think is ready for an overhaul on the default WoW interface? Every expansion has granted us some awesome new features for what many consider the best and most flexible user interface in MMO gaming now. I always look forward to new interface additions.

I'd like to respectfully disagree with the health and mana bar change. While I'm aware that you suggested putting in a UI option to be able to switch them back and forth, Blizzard's past history with these types of changes is all or nothing. Aka: if they change it, EVERYONE will have the new version.
As for why I'd like it left alone: I am one of those few healers who actually preferred the old-style raid frames. They were small and slender, taking up surprisingly little screen space while the long, skinny style made it quite obvious when someone was missing a chunk of health. (Speaking of screen space, the space between these bars was translucent, meaning that it was possible to see THROUGH the health bars at the fire or mob(s) that might happen to be behind that real estate.) Debuffs were neatly put at the end of the bars, making it easy to see who had what debuffs. There was no squinting needed to tell which three people had Noth's Curse of the Plaguebringer. Admittedly you couldn't see their buffs, (the one portion of the raid frames change I DO approve of) but one could work around that. I, personally, found the new raid UI unhealable, and there was no option you could check to switch it back. I was forced to start using a UI addon (Shadowed Uf, for the record) which works well enough, but lacks the simple elegance of the old UI.
TD:LR, Since Blizzard has been basing many of their UI changes on addons, it is likely that if they redesign the default party/solo raid frames, it will be to the raid UI style. I'm aware I will probably be outvoted because there seem to be more players who liked the raid UI changes than ones who didn't, but the new raid UI makes it difficult to see small changes to health, is impossible to see behind, and is difficult to tell when someone does or does not have a specific debuff.

I would be happy to have a minimal detail option for the UI. No fancy gryphons, just the bars and buttons in simple frames. Playing on a laptop means space is precious.
Second option would be Horde and Alliance themed UIs.

The default AH is in desperate need of improvement. Searching, posting, and price checking are all mdeningly frustraiting without an addon. Being forced to use addons that add more tabs to the AH UI to get the functionality I need just makes the UI look cluttered and redundant.

I think the thing that most people forget with things like this, however, is that while a lot of the requests are simple, small fixes, if Blizzard spent all their time worrying about the "perfect" UI then where would the game itself be? I mean, personally I'd prefer to download my addons to make everything exactly how I want it (specifically when remembering that what you want and what I want will NEVER be the same thing) so that Blizzard can continue to worry about what's truly important, game content.
Nothing's more depressing than a game that looks gorgeous, but lacks in every other matter imaginable :P

Hey, that's why we're here. To make cool addons, and show blizz how it could be.
They improved A LOT the classic UI since vanilla.
Avan Jan 14th 2011 2:31PM
They could always just hire/contract/assign some people to work solely on the UI.

Speaking of the Battleground pane has anyone else been having the issue of que'ing for 1 bg and then when you go to select a 2nd one to que for getting an error saying "You can only be que'ed for 2 battlegrounds at the same time" even though you are only que'ed for 1?
On the inventory interface another thing that I love about Arkinventory that I don't believe the default UI does is allow you to check your bank and inventory on your other toons.

I've had the same thing happen to me on several occasions. If you haven't posted a bug on the Blizz forums yet, you should, they need to figure this one out...

I get this one all the time. Infuriating on lowbies, where the random dungeon finder no worky.

Have you tried Advance Tradeskill window. It will let you search by item name, set custom sorts. It also sorts by materials available for an item. It will also show items you can make even if it is a 2 step process. For example if you have cobalt bars and need bolts to make an item it will still show the item. When you click create it auto ques all the steps you need to finish the object. It is pretty handy and I like it better than the default ui.

I'd like to see "Nearest Arch Dig Site" added to the map tracking feature, with a unique arrow on the mini-map for it.

Your life just got better. It gives you that waypoint arrow you want, plus a pop-out list you need. When you complete a project, it gives you a ding and let's you navigate straight to that projects "complete" page. It also gives you a step counter, which tells you what scope ranged you're in! Green=0-29 yd Yellow=30-69 yd Red=70+yd From the last place you surveyed! You'll get a pop-out list of all your digspots, And you can turn on distance to each from the menu! It also works great with Tom-Tom!

My pet peeve:
Make the show cloak and helm options checkboxes in the character panel, and make it remember the preferances for each gear set.

There is an addon called HatTrick which I believe hasn't been updated in AGES but still works.

Sadly, HatTrick has started throwing errors at me when I mouse over the checkboxes on my Character frame. It's still *working*, it's just started throwing errors about Frame Owner, or something similar.

UI templates. Customizing ones UI can be scary to the uninitiated so having some additional options/layouts to chose from, as well as some ability to modify the UI without the need for add-ons would be amazing.
Fel Jan 14th 2011 2:25PM
I only have two major complaints about the current UI really One has already been covered, and that's the fact that most panels are not movable/re-sizable/hide-able by default.
The other is the lack of customizable on-screen information, like Spell Announcements, Scrolling Battle Text, and so on. Add-ons have come to the rescue in every case, but I feel like end-game content simply cannot be done using the unaltered UI anymore, and that's a major flaw that they have never adequately addressed in my opinion.

Actually, if you go into MBF's options, there's a thing for putting in exceptions - just type Archy in and it'll fix that. Or at least it did when I tried it on a friend's PC who uses MBF.

I don't know if anyone's mentioned it yet (because I can't read), but they NEED a simple way to relist failed auction items.
