Breakfast Topic: How do you get rid of more money than you need?
Back in Wrath, you could hardly call me a wheeler-dealer type. I had a couple max-level characters with about 10,000 gold between them. Frankly, it was more money than I needed. I had good gear, plenty of bags, and 280% flight speed. My alts were well taken care of. Not that I'm complaining. So far as problems go, having too much money is a good problem to have.
I planned to use it all to power level my professions in Cataclysm. And that's precisely what I did. It cost a lot of scratch to grind tailoring, alchemy, and inscription to 525. But as I was powerleveling professions, I was creating saleable products. And making money. Like an Azerothian version of Brewster's Millions, the harder I tried spending my money, the more money I wound up making. I couldn't spend away my money even if I tried.
Now, I'm "stuck" with even more gold than I had in Wrath. After reading up on what rich people do with their money, I decided to take my own best shot at getting rid of it. Sadly, despite my best efforts, I couldn't find a realtor to help me buy up Cathedral Square and turn the place into condos. I couldn't self-finance a bid for Congress. And I couldn't get my own reality show on E!
If you were thrown into your own Azeroth-centric version of Brewster's Millions, how would you empty your bank account? If you had more gold than you knew what to do with ... what would you do with it all? Make an army of well-geared alts? Corner the Vial of the Sands market? Or maybe you'd just plain give it away?

Making even more gold. I would need it eventually and it would be easyer to have it by then.
Jamie Jan 17th 2011 8:09AM
Ah, but you'd trade it all for a little more.
Heilig Jan 17th 2011 8:35AM
I've given away nearly 200K to semi-random trade chat people twice now. It's an amazing feeling. Pick somebody in trade chat that seems to have your same sensibilities/playstyle/interests, whatever, and make them a very happy person.
Gold is easy as all hell to make, especially right now, for people who know how to do it, but the shock and amazement that comes through when you completely change someone's game is priceless.

Forgot to tie this to the above comment. I meant that I would also use it to make more gold so that I can continue to do this over and over again.

Buy a Vial of the Sands!
Unless it craps gold, that's a pretty surefire way to lose some. It's first on my list of things to do when I get that much gold.

Welp, IF I had that kinda gold (I never do, sadly)... I dunno. 310% flight on my main, then probably just keep my alts exceptionally geared. Once that's all said and done... no clue. I'd probably just find some way to dump all of it on the ground and roll in it. -shrugs-
Or I'd go the 'give it away' route. Put in Trade 'Giving away gold, don't buy from them gold farmers! I got wut you need, I think!' Something like that.

I would annoy all the AH peeps that buy up everything and sell for like 200% so undercut them hard = you lose money and they as well :D
Baba Jan 17th 2011 9:09AM
Or they simply buy up all your stock and resell it when you're not online, and make a ton of gold lol

AND YOU GET A VIAL OF THE SAND!
AND YOU GET A VIAL OF THE SAND!
AND YOU... yeah, basically I'd put the goldfarmers out of business on my server.

I like your response.
Moeru Jan 17th 2011 8:16AM
I bought the engineering bike in wrath for my rogue when I had 30k sitting around at the end so prolly something along those lines with the alchemy mount though I'm not sure I'd want one for any of my alts atm

I'll tell you when I have too much. Until then, I'm sure I could help anyone who has too much gold out.

Ahh, Brewster's Millions. Awesome movie.
If I had to give away a ton of gold, one of the ways I would do so would be to sit in the starting zone for some races, and watch when new people came in. Make sure they were new people by making sure they don't check a mailbox, and get their Heirlooms, then give them a ton to get started, and give them a few tips on how not to blow it.
Maybe I would also buy a ton of 14-slot bags, and give them to the same people.
Probably grab every mount I wanted, maybe buy some of the rarer things to market on the AH ( oh no, more gold) and power level some professions. Run around, buying the rarer things like BOE item sets which are now incredibly expensive.
Now, what if as in Brewster's Millions, you had limitations to what you could do with it? He could only give so much away, he couldn't have anything at the end of 30 days, not even a single penny left, no investments, and couldn't just throw it away. How would you do that? He did it by being creative as hell. One way he did it was renting out things, and hiring people for ridiculous amounts, but in the game we can't rent things, so how would you get rid of so much gold and being limited to how much you could give away, and couldn't have anything tangible at the end of 30 days?
brammage Jan 17th 2011 8:44AM
You can't rent things, but you can hire people. How about a full entourage to precede you through the streets of Orgrimmar and sing your praises? I'm thinking song and dance with camels and fireworks, like during the "Prince Ali, glorious he" song in Aladdin.
Drakkenfyre Jan 17th 2011 10:03AM
Good idea.
"I want you and 39 of your friends to raid Orgrimmar, and kill several NPC's, including Garrosh. You get 500g a piece."
Funny thing is, the Horde would probably let them go after Garrosh.

Army of geared, 310% flying alts sounds about right.
MusedMoose Jan 17th 2011 8:25AM
Quite literally, I *just* bought 280% speed flying for the character I've been leveling. I had to have one of my mains send him 2000 gold so he could afford it.
I'm fairly certain there's no such thing as too much gold. ^_^
Basil Berntsen Jan 17th 2011 8:31AM
Buy virtual bling. I just picked up the tabard of the lightbringer, and am considering getting my alts motorcycles...
Trilynne Jan 17th 2011 8:32AM
Mounts, mounts, and more mounts. Vial of the sands, obviously, but then I would powerlevel tailoring and engineering, so I could have the carpets AND the choppers... then I would probably buy any rare drop pets off the AH as they struck my fancy. Oh, and get 310% on any alts I wanted, as well as for the friend I'm leveling with. Then I would hand out gold to any of my friends that needed/wanted it for anything. Almost forgot, I would also powerlevel professions on alts so that I can use them to make stuff to continue making me gold. ^^
Xantenise Jan 17th 2011 8:37AM
Yeesh! I'm actually *trying* to earn money and have yet to break 15K! :P
Vial of the Sands, for sure. It's on the list as soon as I have a better income.
