The Queue: A ghost story
A new Pomplamoose video was released earlier this week, and I'd be a terribad if I didn't share it in The Queue.
Read on for a true ghost story.
Aeros asked:
Do you think that Blizzard is going to fix 1-60 dungeons? I mean, I want to do the dungeons, but doing a dungeon gives me so much XP that it throws off my leveling by quests, making them green or grey.
That's what dungeons are going to do for you -- provide large boosts in XP and gear. That experience has been toned down a bit, but it's still quite a boost. If you're leveling just to do quests, then don't do dungeons. But if you're just leveling for leveling's sake, then don't worry about it too much. You can always go back and complete the dungeons.
The reason behind this is worth noting, too. Blizzard didn't want to make dungeon running a necessary part of the leveling experience, as it used to be (practically, at least).
Dr. Knox asked:
Could you tell me something awesome that I otherwise wouldn't have known about?
I have three potentially awesome things to share with you, Dr. Knox:
- Triskaidekaphobia is the fear of the number 12 + 1 (don't type it or else you'll die).
- Fried spider is a popular dish in Cambodia.
- When I was around the age of 15, I woke up at 6 a.m., which was a little early for me. I looked at my open door and saw my Grandpa Bo standing there. I looked at him oddly and said "Hello?" He then turned and walked away. I got up a minute later to find that he wasn't there, but my parents were awake upstairs. I figured that he was just up there talking to them. Thinking nothing of it really, I went and took a shower and got ready for school. After I had dressed, my mom came down and told me my Grandfather had passed away earlier that morning at a hospital many, many miles away. It's possible I overhead some conversation about it while I was waking up, or something else is possible. Either way, good luck getting to sleep tonight when you look at your bedroom door.
North asked:
I was able to change my username and avatar picture on the main Joystiq site a while ago, but since then, the site has gone through a redesign and I can't find the option to change my username. Does anyone know how to accomplish this?
You can't change your username.
I can say that we're going to be getting some redesign done on our site soon, if everything goes as planned. At that point, we're going to see some update design (although possibly not functionality) come to our comment system. I'd be surprised if there'd be a way for you to change your username. Everything else should be much easier, though.
Someone will ask:

I remember hearing something about bandages applying a HoT to your character instead of being channelled. I haven't maxed First Aid yet so if one of the bandages you learn at 525 does what I'm asking then great. If not, are we going to see that changed or is it an idea that's been put in the scrap pile with Path of the Titans. As usual, sorry if this has been answered already.
RussGreene Jan 20th 2011 11:05AM
That was the way band-aids worked in the beta, but it doesn't seem like that functionality got translated into live.
Hirumared Jan 20th 2011 11:42AM
band aids worked like that at the beginning of the beta, but it got scrapped like path of the titans.
Pyromelter Jan 20th 2011 11:42AM
Right now, it's scrap pile. I think the original intent was that blizzard wanted to force people to use bandages in raids. Looks like they changed that. I can't remember why they did, although everyone getting to be a resto druid (instant HoT) once a minute might have had some impact on it.

Like Mend Pet-ting yourself on a 1m cooldown?
Forreststump Jan 20th 2011 1:38PM
Petting yourself is generally not encouraged to be a public activity.

That's what dungeons are going to do for you -- provide large boots in XP and gear
Like clown shoes?
Derleth Jan 20th 2011 11:54AM
I thought Outlands was for the clown clothes?
Candina@WH Jan 20th 2011 11:59AM
That would be only the BC dungeons...

I am leveling another toon and I've noticed that dungeon experience has been toned down by a LOT!
First I get instant que because I am a tank. Then I take 2-3 quests at front of dungeon. Then we go through packs (like in BRD) then someone says : "I need to go afk" luckly it's not a healer so we proceed. If a healer goes afk it's 5 min wait or kick time. If you join a dungeon and go afk, I don't want to be stuck with suck player. Time is money and I don't want to stop in middle of dungeon waiting for you till you poop, eat, call your friends or watch your favorite show on TV.
So after 20 packs of mobs and finally killing a boss, I turn in quest and I get 7,000 exp and some crappy blue (mostly shoulders) but I already have BOA gear so I don't want those shoulders. Another disenchant. Time spent : 45 min - experience gained : around 10,000. If I was questing, I'd be a level higher by now. Those quests give 10,000 experience and you don't need to go through packs of mobs to get to your destination.

On that note, what is the current take Blizz has to using Cata gems in older content's gear?
I was leveling a prot paladin, and found myself using non-plate with 3 sockets so I could suddenly have 120 more stamina. Is that "working as intended?"
Either way it's kind of awesome :D
Nethenel Jan 20th 2011 4:53PM
@twill I thought the same, however in game there is a tooltip on the gems (right underneath their name) saying "Requires item level: 285". I do not believe this change has made it to wowhead or even on the armory.

You seem to have missed the many voices nagging in your brain saying:
"Stop typing! Nobody's going to give a kobold's ass!"

Lemme see, you don't like people you're running with unless they are as uber as you, you hate the low Xp and you will level faster with quests.
Then, uhm ... why do you persist in running dungeons?
Negative stress, mon. Baaad mojo.
Craig Jan 20th 2011 11:08AM
Prior to Patch 4.0; I know nodes of herbs and ore were well they were hot commodities and spawns weren't like they are now. Has the faster respawn times effected the market for raw materials in AH's overall or is farming these things especially the pre-BC or BC nodes still effective at helping one to profit.
Also, I know nodes in the 1-60 zones were redesigned/respawned timers improved...what about Outland and Northrend....I was gathering low level herbs in Howling Fjord and they just didn't seem as abundant as they were in Eastern Kingdoms/Kalimdor.
Ronin Jan 20th 2011 11:37AM
In my experience, lower-level herbs and ores have plummeted in value, likely due to the fact that so many people are leveling up new characters.
This means more people performing gathering professions as they level up, and flooding the Auction House with the materials they gathered. It also means that fewer people need to buy these materials on the Auction House to level up their Crafting professions, since more people already have an alt they're leveling who is supplying them with the materials they need.
So with high supply and low demand (and a few idiots who undercut other sellers by _far_ more than needed, resulting in other people undercutting _them_ even more to ensure their items will sell) prices are the lowest they've been for a long time.
My conclusion: it's not currently worth farming the gathering professions to try to make money. Whether that will change in another month or two, I don't know. Right now, for many items (on some servers at least), it's hardly worth putting mats that my leveling characters are gathering, up on the AH. In some cases prices are _lower_ than what vendors will pay for them.
loop_not_defined Jan 20th 2011 11:53AM
I think being able to fly in the 1-60 zones had a lot to do with today's rock-bottom prices, more than anything. Various materials that couldn't immediately be gathered right outside a major city were often fairly expensive before Cataclysm.
Hrothgar Jan 20th 2011 12:03PM
I can't speak to the non-northrend ore and herbs but saronite, titanium, ice thorn and lichebloom have dropped in value by about 30%.
However, I can also say that the gathering process is better because of lower competition.
I know of 640 +/- known nodes of ore/herbs on my realm in Icecrown. Two days ago, I hit all of them in about 45 min. I pulled 6 stacks of saronite, 1 full stack of Titanium, 8 stacks of lichbloom, about 12 Frost Lotus, and 7 stacks of Ice Thorn. Included were all the sundry additional items like crystallized .
This all sold for about 1200g in less than 24 hours.
This is just to say that farming can still be a low stress, low time commitment, inexpensive form of making steady gold. Figure 45 min - 1 hour for the farming, plus a random dungeon along the way, and 15 min to post everything and 5 min to collect the proceeds and your not doing too bad.
Farming in Twilight Highlands and Uldum is now another form of PvP. The same 1.5 hours of commitment though is netting me around 2700g but is a bit less consistent because of the competition.
Pyromelter Jan 20th 2011 12:04PM
It's not just leveling, it's the fact that you can fly in the old world now. I remember selling things like gromsblood for 10 gold per herb. Not per stack, per herb. Now, since you can just mount up and have a stack in about 5 minutes, it's not just worth that anymore.
Also, gathering professions generally are not as good per hour in terms of gold made, but if you reach end-game mats, you can make some good profits off of current-level gathering materials. The exception to gathering professions would be mining, because oftentimes you can buy raw ore, smelt it, and repost it for profit. If you have an alchemist, mining and alchemy are a great way to combine professions for big profit. But pure farming and then listing on the AH is a pretty terrible gold-per-hour payoff right now, especially for lower level mats.
