It's just a chatty, conversationy tidbit. Like just an "interesting fact about yourself" type deal. And yes, there's probably a shred of pride to it too. But we all have the right to mention various things we survived or whatnot - it can bring some sympathy, which everyone always likes :D (except when they're really grouchy I suppose).

At least, that's my Canadian perspective (there, I'm waving my "interesting fact about myself" around).
