Mad World has always been one of my favorite songs. It has a haunting, melancholy sound that appeals to me; the lyrics are poetic and beautifully written. It's understandable, then, that I was excited to see Brunhila'sWoW-themed version, Mad World of Warcraft Cataclysm. The video is okay. It's Brunhila's first video, and it does a fine job serving the song.
The music is really where Mad World of Cataclysm shines. She did a great job of keeping with the rhyme, meter, and feel of the original song. Her performance, however, is amazing. Brunhila really nailed the vocals in a way I wasn't expecting; I feel like she knocked it out of the park. I kind of wish she'd cover the original song, considering how much emotion she squeezes into the song. Interested in the wide world of machinima? Guess I have to be That Guy, though - Gary Jule's version of Mad World isn't the original. The original song is actually much faster paced, and is by Tears for Fears. The version this is based on is a cover.
Mr. Gray never said it was the original, old bean. He said the Jule version which he linked had always been one of his favorites.
And if I may say, Brunhila's exquisite piece did wonderful justice to that particular iteration of the song. She's got a voice like melted butter and single malt Scotch.
Thanks so much for all the comments and critiques. I really had fun putting this together and did not expect such a enthusiastic response. To answer a couple questions, I did play guitar for this too. This video features my main - a female dwarf rogue, which is a really fun combination that I'm surprised more people don't play. The racial rocks (stoneform - ha!) for rogues who get a little aggro here and there. I do play the original song - yes the Gary Jule's version - irl and these lyrics just came to me the week Cata came out. I love wow parody songs and have a new one in the works right now based on a song by Evanescence. I will definitely try to do a better job with the video on this one :)
It was just a critique. In fact, I enjoyed the video. Maybe referring her to "taylor swift" was a bit harsh--didn't mean for it to come out that way; my friend showed me the swift oscar/grammy/best teacher/etc performance that day (as we laughed at how off she was), so I guess it was fresh in my mind. And most of her layers were a bit off cents, but again, that is a critique, not a flame. As much as I hated the culture of art school, one thing it did teach me was how to take a critique. I could care less if she "sounds" like a pro--to me it was a mistake it post. Most the time, you'd re-record that bit real quick, or use a bit of the auto-tune to correct the pitch--or something to that effect. Again, a critique in the process of making it, not so much a personal critique.

Very impressive, and the ending was awesome.

Actually, the phrase "the original song" shows up in the post and lots of times in the comments.
Really, though, I'm not trying to detract from how good the video is. It was outstanding.

This was awesome. I wonder if there is a copy of the MP3 of it anywhere.
