Scattered Shots: Cataclysm hunter trinkets

It's loot week here at Scattered Shots! We've covered pre-heroic loot and we've covered pre-raid loot; now it's time to take the "pre-" out of the loot discussions and get down to the best PvE loot available to us hunters right now. Because there's just too much loot discussion to fit in only one post, we're going to be splitting things up.
Today, the focus is on trinkets, those pesky loot pieces with their complicated and delightful mechanics that make them so much more interesting than another collection of stats. Trinkets in Cataclysm have grown more complicated than ever, too. Back in Wrath days, we could count on most proc trinkets having the same 45-second internal cooldown, but these days, they all seem to have different proc durations, different internal cooldown, different everythings.
So join me after the cut as we delve into the wonderful world of hunter trinkets, find out why Hurricane isn't for hunters and how the very best trinket available is also the most easily attainable! On Thursday, we'll go over the broader best-in-slot gear lists for hunters. For today, it's all trinkets, all the time!
The trinket list
Let's start by narrowing down the list of trinkets we're going to review here. We'll take all the raid hunter trinkets, of course, but we'll also pull in the Darkmoon Card, grab Tia's Grace -- our best heroic trinket -- and I'm even going to break the normal "nothing remotely PvP" rule and grab the Tol Barad trinket, since it's so easily attainable and PvE-competitive.
Here's what we're looking at:
- Unsolvable Riddle
- Prestor's Talisman of Machination
- Fluid Death
- Essence of the Cyclone
- DMC: Hurricane
- Tia's Grace
Before getting into ranking the trinkets, let's take a look at how each one works. Note that for the time being, we can only weight things based on what's live in the game right now. We know that several things are changing in the PTR, and we'll take that into consideration, but since things are still changing on the PTR, we can't base our stat weights entirely on PTR info. However, even with the changes, agility is still king, and the relative value of the trinkets shouldn't change too much.
Unsolvable Riddle
Available from Tol Barad for 125 commendations, this trinket is instantly recognizable as a PvE hunter trinket, with a giant on-use agility boost. If you use it every chance you possibly can, it has a 16.67% uptime -- a very common uptime for Cataclysm trinkets. This makes the average agility provided 267.5.
While the Unsolvable Riddle is clearly attractive compared to heroic trinkets, it falls behind the curve once we compare it to raid-level trinkets.
Prestor's Talisman of Machination
Dropping from Nefarian himself, this trinket has a lovely 321 agility plus the haste proc. The internal cooldown is reported as 75 seconds; however, the proc chance appears to be only 10%. This means that on average, we'll get the 15-second effect only every 85 seconds or so (possibly a bit more often, possibly less, depending on how DoTs factor into the proc). This is a 17.65% uptime, making it the equivalent of 339.9 haste, on average.
This is a very strong trinket, as befits a Nefarian drop, and we'll certainly be competing with other classes for it.
Fluid Death
This is available from your friendly vendor at any time for a mere 1,650 valor points. Not only does this trinket give us 321 hit rating, but it also has a stacking agility buff, topping out very quickly at 380 agility. There is some small ramp-up time to this effect of course, but then it gives us more agility on average than any other trinket.
In a typical boss fight, the ramp-up time is negligible, and this trinket is phenomenal and a must-have for every hunter. The giant chunk of hit rating makes balancing your hit cap easy, and if you're over on hit, you can always reforge a chunk of that into crit rating. This is the best hunter trinket currently available, and we don't even have to wait for it to drop.
Essence of the Cyclone
This trinket drop from Halfus Wyrmbreaker, the first boss in the Bastion of Twilight. In addition to the hefty agility, this trinket is proccing our favorite secondary stat, crit rating. Unlike Prestor's Talisman of Machination, though, the proc duration is only 10 seconds. From player reports, the internal cooldown appears to be 50 seconds, though I haven't found any good information on the proc chance. If it's 10% like Prestor's, then we're looking at a 16.67% uptime -- and that sounds just about right for the Cataclysm trinket design.
If you had to choose two stats for your trinkets, they would either be agility and hit, or agility and crit. Essence of the Cyclone is a great trinket, and happily, it drops from an easy boss at the start of an instance. The rogues are gonna want this one too, but at least you should have plenty of opportunity to compete for the drops.
Darkmoon Card: Hurricane
DMC: Hurricane is the subject of much debate in the hunter world. We're used to comparing stats, but the big thing with Hurricane isn't stats; it provides a flat extra attack. Here are the key bits of info, based on the best information we now have:
- The proc chance is about 5%, with no internal cooldown. It can proc as often as chance favors you.
- It will not proc off of your pet's attack or DoTs, including Serpent Sting, Black Arrow, Explosive Shot, or Piercing Shots.
- It uses the spell crit multiplier and the spell hit chance. So even if you're hit-capped, this special extra damage can actually miss.
- The damage is increased by survival's mastery.
Tia's Grace
Dropping from Siamat in the Lost City of the Tol'vir, Tia's Grace is a shockingly good trinket for a heroic drop. Again, it has the stacking agility bonus, and again, the ramp-up effect is really negligible in most boss fights. What really matters is that the agility ramps up to a constant 340 agility -- a larger static agility bonus than most of the raid trinkets!
There are only two downsides to this trinket: The amount of mastery we get, 285, is less than we see in secondary stats on raid trinkets; and the item level is only 346, which can make you feel a bit sheepish when you're passing on raid drop trinkets. However, this trinket is definitely one that will serve you well even compared to raid tier trinkets.
Ranking the hunter trinkets
Okay, enough discussion on how they work, let's take a look at how the trinkets compare against each other. As always, exact weighting depends on not just your spec and talents, but also on your gear. It's possible that the relative positions of any two trinkets could swap depending on your gearing, but these should be accurate for the vast majority of hunters out there currently.
From best to worst, here's what the trinket list looks like!
- Fluid Death Not just the best, but the best by a good margin. You want this trinket so bad you'd kill a baby seal just to get it a day early.
- Essence of the Cyclone
- Tia's Grace
- Prestor's Talisman of Machination
- DMC: Hurricane Note that the value of this trinket varies heavily based on your spec. For BM, it's probably ranked lower; for MM, it's probably competitive with Prestor's Talisman.
- Unsolvable Riddle

I tossed Tia's Grace in the list just as an example of where the great heroic trinkets would place. I'm kinda regretting it now.
No heroic trinket makes it to the top of the list.
The upcoming alchemist's stone is very good. It's not BiS (from a pure dps viewpoint), but it's not far behand number 2.

I think the misunderstanding is that you want people to read your article and say "So by the next tier of raiding I should have a fluid Death and a Essence of Cyclone." A forward looking position.
But what everyone else seems to be thinking of is what can I go get now today? Is what I have good or where do i find something better? A current reactionary position.
Your point is that no heroic trinket will be the best, but it's better than Tol barad, Hurricane, and about on par with Nef's. You've answered an important question, but it's not the one everyone seems to be asking.
Frostheim Jan 24th 2011 6:07PM
Aye, I think I should have been more clear about the intent of the article -- what our top trinkets are (or if I just left Tia's Grace off, that would probably have helped). There's already an article on the best heroic hunter loot that covers which heroic trinkets you want.
The idea here is to look at what gear to put on your loot lists for raiding, and which ones to pass on.

I'm currently using Skardyn's Grace over Tia's Grace, because I figured the 285 agility always being up was better than having to ramp up the stacks. I don't see Skardyn's on the list, so I was wondering where these two, specifically, rank with each other. I have Tia's Grace in my bank, so if it is better, I can swap them immediately. That is until the patch that introduces the new Alchemist Stones :P

I actually have both Skadyn and Tia's Grace and did some parses with them last night. On my no-proc test gear, Tia's Grace was able to beat Skadyn's Grace by 200 dps at least. I would attribute this to the +55 agi that Tia's Grace ramps up over time as compared to the added mastery CD that Skadyn provides. I also tested with Unsolvable Riddle and found that it falls around 500 dps short of Skadyns Grace and around 700 dps short of Tia's Grace making it a nice trinket to have just for its ilvl.
Grace of Herald is a great trinket as well, if you dont have Essence of Cyclone. Have yet to earn enough Valor points to get Fluid Death but am saving it for my T11 chest.

How do you rate the new Alchemist's stone Frost?
Marc Jan 25th 2011 2:04AM
Hey guys,
Just wondering, i'm a SV hunter and i have the following trinks:
Figurine - Demon panther (JC Trink)
Grace of the Herald
Tia's Grace
Which two would be the best combination for my spec and my DPS?
Cheers.

Ok I was curious, what about Key to the Endless Chamber on heroic? Why is that not on the list? I was talking to some of my friends and they said that I should replace that with Tia Grace? Any thoughts? I have been hunting this trinket for awhile.

Just a thought on the Unsolvable riddle, it may have only about 267.5 avg agility boost, but you get the full benefit when you want it. I haven’t worked out the math yet, but getting 1605 agility in combination with heroism, it benefits you more than its average.
Some napkin math, it comes out to 20 second of the 40 for heroism, you get the 1605 bonus agility, so 802.5 avg agi bonus during heroism, vs 380 avg agi bonus during heroism.
Also with how i see fights going with different phases, you want to control your bursts of dps, save them for specific parts of the fights, obvious example is exposed head on magmaw.
Not saying that its OMG BEST EVA, just saying its better than the stats make it look, and in some situations i can rise up a couple notches on that list.
Not bad to have it around and switch out during certain fights.

I think Unsolved Riddle isn't as bad, at least for an orc, because of its CD stacking potential.
Blood Fury (2min CD) + Unsolved Riddle (2min CD) just line up too nicely.
If you fire them up after Fluid Death has full stacks
thats
380agi + 1605agi + 1069ap = 1985agi + 1169ap running at the same time, possibly hasted by Rapid Fire or Bloodlust or stacked with a Potion of Tol'vir 1200agi
now thats some serious burst
Deepfriedegg Jan 25th 2011 10:17AM
I use Unsolvable riddle for fights with Burst phases.
For example Magmaw:
Use on beginning, on 1st exposed phase and on 3rd exposed phase
Maloriak
Use on beginning, both green phases and possibly can use it fourth time in phase 2.
On fights without significant burst phases or where the timing of phases doesnt fit the trinket CD I wouldnt recommend using this one - unless that is your best trinket, of course.
The stacking potential is indeed terrific. This with Tol´vir potion gives you 7440 raid buffed AP (3380 AGI) as SV. In 4.0.6 it would be 3234 AGI (7115 AP) for SV, 2940 AGI (6468 AP) for MM and 2940 AGI (8085 AP) for BM.

Enhancement shaman are also going to be rolling on these trinks. I have Essence of the Cyclone & Tia's Grace. Tomorrow I will get the valor trink and replace Tia's Grace.
Its tough when 3 classes are all suing the same stats. Hunters, Rogues and Enhancement shaman. far too much competition
markhfugate Jan 25th 2011 9:03AM
I think you mean FOUR classes rolling on these, dont forget Feral Druids

I'm running with Frost's Survival crit talent build, and used crit/hit gems in most of my gear to take advantage of the new meta gem. I have a total of 7 gem slots + meta, 3 are JC-only agi gems, the rest are green. I don't have a single piece of raid gear -- all trash epics, rep items, heroic gear. I'm at 25% crit and 4650 Agi.
I've spent a lot of time in front of the dummy, and arrived and two best trinkets for my playstyle -- Key to the Endless Chamber and Figurine - Demon Panther. I've tried every trinket except for the PvP one and Nef's.
The trick is to be absolutely on top of your procs and cooldowns, which makes the playstyle almost Marksmanship-like. As soon as PowerAuras tell me that the Key procced, I blow every other CD, which Includes the Figurine, Rapid Fire, orc racial, pet ability, etc.
I do this for a couple of reasons -- one, the concept of "average agility" is not very realistic -- in heroics, I'd never blow my CDs on three half-dead mobs, but a trinket can certainly proc whenever the hell it wants, even if you squash a critter or multishot three dying mobs. Sure, average agility goes up, but it's wasted. Two, most boss abilities align with CD's and procs pretty well -- the fight starts with everyone blowing everything, then adds/fire/MCs/AoEs/CC happen, which allows all CD's and procs to reset. By the time you're out of the add/fire/MC/AoE/CC phase of the fight, you can stand and pew pew with all your CD's blown again.
This allows me to average 18k dps on a medium-movement fight, and crack 22-23k on a heroic boss like Obsidius (if I'm not kiting). If timed with Bloodlust, the burst is so strong that I have to feign no matter how geared the tank is.
Just my $0.02 ... thanks!

How about Skardyn's Grace (http://www.wowhead.com/item=56440), Grace of the Herald (http://www.wowhead.com/item=56295) and Key to the Endless Chamber (http://www.wowhead.com/item=56328)?
gamefreak Jan 25th 2011 8:24PM
Currently I'm finding this combo to be insane.
Unsolvable Riddle: 1605 Agi
H Key to the Endless Chamber: 1710 Agi
Potion of the Tol'vir: 1200 Agi
Total: 4515 Agi
Then we have our Agi buffs: Into the wilderness 15%, Mail Specialization 5%,
Kings/motw 5%, and hunting party 2%
These stack multiplicatively for a 29.32% increase in Agi.
Factor that into our insane agility boost... 4515*1.2932 = 5838.8 Agility.
Oh we get crit from that too. ~18% crit!!! Thats more than your essence of cyclone will give you.
Now attack power 5838.8*2 = 11677.6 AP!!
Now. Throw in Call of the wild for a 10% AP bonus And use rapid fire while you're at it.
With this combo I've been pulling ~30k dps for a good portion of single target fights before settling into 17.5-19k.
Tanis Jan 25th 2011 10:44PM
A GM had told me a couple of weeks ago that DMC:Hurricane was being improved in response to my ticket. I've confirmed on the PTR that the trinket now uses ranged hit% for the proc and it will crit at 200%. I get some nice 14k+ procs with my standard SV build, ilvl 353.
candellopp Jan 27th 2011 7:29AM
My hunter friend in my guild is using Arcane Shot as a priority for SV. He is criting more than 20K with it due to DMC: H and is doing 17K DPS on Heroic Dungeons with iLvl 350. I believe he still casts ES on CD, but surely uses AS with much more frequency that we usually do.
With 4.0.6 changes, do you guys think that this can be a new way to play?
