Breakfast Topic: What do other players do that really annoys you?

WoW is a game of interaction. If you want to do any dungeons, serious PvP, or tough quests, you have to work with other players. Also like the real world, occasionally we meet other people we like, some we instantly click with, some who grow on us over time, and some people who just annoy the heck out of us. Sometimes it is in-game actions we find distasteful; sometimes it is how they talk to other players or any other variety of actions that hits a nerve. With some of these people, we have to bury our dislike because they are in our guilds, and we just do an if they don't bother me, I won't bother them approach. Others, we can avoid entirely and make use of the wonderful /ignore feature.
One of my biggest pet peeves is ganking. Killing someone who is 20 or 30 levels lower than you isn't honorable. It doesn't make you cool -- it is basically a grown man beating up a toddler. The worst part of it is that these same players tend to run and hide when someone their own level comes out to defend the noobs. This is a cowardly act. Another issue I have is people who use Xbox Live talk when they are frustrated -- they immediately devolve into racist, homophobic, and just awful and often nonsensical comments. My final pet peeve is people who mispronounce words in Vent but say them over and over as if it was on their word-of-the-day calender, pronouncing melee "mealie, mealie" and using it as if it were their new favorite word.
Are there certain actions other players commit that really annoy you? What do you find truly distasteful? Do you have some of these people who annoy you in your guild? Or are you one of the offenders?

When they get on their big mount and stand on top of the quest NPC I'm trying to talk to. That annoys me. Simple solution, have "/ignore" also remove their avatar from your screen.

I so agree with this.
+ your avatar is really fitting here :D

This isn't just griefing. People do this when they are handing in or taking a quest, still on their flying mount. It's very annoying. I don't think it's that difficult to dismount when you can see that others are trying to talk to the questgiver too. It's just a click ; )

It's griefing. It's intentional. It's a violation of the TOS.
I just ask them to move. Then I warn them that I'm filing a GM ticket on them. Then I follow through. I don't stand for people trodding carelessly upon others in real life and I won't stand for it in a game either.

ABSOLUTELY! I hate this! It was especially bad during the TB 'freebie' days. Right after a battle it would be IMPOSSIBLE to target the vendor.
I don't use a huge mount, but I still make sure I am not blocking NPCs when reforging, etc.

Use name plates and the interact function. Don't act like a retard.

Yeah that's at the top of my list. That is a manifestation of ignorance that I think is at the root of all the things that peeve me. Rudeness in general. People who intentionally try to mess with someones game because they can. I am one to go around buffing and emoting people. offering a free port now and then or free holiday items.

/e invites Annoying Player to a group.
/e runs far far away.
/e casts Leap of Faith on Annoying Player.
Problem solved. :)

This.
It is not difficult, even on a huge flying mount, to stand to one side to talk to the NPC. There is NO REASON to completely engulf the NPC to interact with it.
That said, there is an even simpler solution. You can turn on friendly name plates and the name plate of the NPC becomes pretty obvious even in a crowd of players. You can then click on the nameplate to interact. There is another way as well. You can bind the function "Interact with target" to a key then use /target to target them, hit your newly mapped "interact with target" key and voila.

I believe the best solution would be to set vendor NPCs so you cannot enter their hitbox (like the JP/VP ones) and cause entering any building to immediately dismount you.

This is the reason i still do the dalaran daily cooking quest. The baby spices are a great way to shrink players who are crowding a quest npc
RedMosquito Jan 25th 2011 10:48AM
"Interact with target" helps a lot. But to make things even better, Blizzard should add a "target nearest NPC" function (that would act similarly to pressing TAB near an enemy, but for, well, friendly NPCs).
You would just bind that to any key you want, and voila. One button press, you target your quest giver from a few yards away. Another button press, you complete your quest.

Mine is similar to this-- but it's people who stand their character RIGHT ON TOP OF MINE.
Often this isn't deliberate-- they just ran up to the Mailbox, for example, and couldn't be bothered to pick a spot that someone else wasn't standing on. It's still inconsiderate, but not as bad as:
The person who deliberately maneuvers their character, taking some pains to do so, until they're obscuring my character. Example: I climb up on a barrel in the auction house, because I'm playing my Gnome, and it gives me a view that isn't blocked by other people's backsides. A Night Elf climbs up onto the _same_barrel_, even though there are other barrels right next to it (and they can easily see over everyone else standing on the floor).
They have trouble getting up there, for some reason, but they keep at it, until they're standing right on top of me. When I call them on it, they reply, "Don't like it? Then move."
I suppose this is a sub-class of the people that really annoy me: people who act like player models are meaningless (except for their one, all-important character). You're kind of missing the point of an MMORPG if you act as if no one should care what anyone does to someone else, and you respond to any objections with "Get a life, it's just a game". See, it's not just any game, it's an RPG. You don't have to be a role-player to understand that people are supposed to be invested in their character. And when your treatment of others is determined solely by what's convenient for you, you're missing the point of an MMO, as well.
Go back to your console FPS game.

@RedMosquito
You can keybind Target nearest ally- it allows you to cycle thru all the friendly targetable players/npc's around you. Of course if there are a lot it could take a while. Another option is /target (name of npc) you can also cheay by doing /tar and a portion of the NPC name. I do however support asking the douche in question to move in /say and if they have no response or start saying crap you then /say just report the dude. that usually works too.

I hate people who show off mounts in general. Atleast I have another AH people don't use now in SW and Orgrimmar.

i see this comment and think...OH tauren..ive played tauren since i started ..my first toon was hunter..tauren my dk ..tauren my pally and druid both tauren..and even that drives me up a wall. 15 tauren with growth buffs on them on mammoths and then a tauren shaman pops BL.....
Jonisjalopy Jan 25th 2011 12:29PM
I love that the man/woman with a rational answer got downranked. Too easy to turn on name plates? Hell, there is even a keybind now for "Interact With Target".
If you are having problems, you just feel like being an ass. You are looking for a reason to be high-and-mighty and report people.

When I saw the title of the article I inmediately tought of this. I find ganking really annoying and stupid, but I think that players standing on NPC is the most annoying thing in wow. Really guys, the NPCs need some personal space too, geez!
Maybe Blizz should add some kind of limiter that automatically dismount you when you're too close to certain NPCs, or some kind of "NPC personal area" where players can't get in but let them interact with the NPC.
Ez Jan 25th 2011 5:44PM
Totally! It is perfectly easy to turn the quest in and move in under 5 seconds. Have a heart you NPC Hogs!
There are 2 players in Shu'halo who, every Christmas, sit on top of the quest givers in IF by the Tree and will not move. They sit there for hours. This goes on every year. What loosers!

I'm pretty well convinced this is why the devs put Baby Spice into the game. One sprinkle of Baby Spice and that annoying pink ponytailed gnome death knight named Bubbles camping the mailbox on her Travelers Tundra Mammoth is now conveniently bite-sized.
