The trouble with tabards

After forum poster Dize made a thread called Tabard Spam on the official forums, Blizz blue community manaer Lylirra chimed in with some interesting tidbits about the current state of tabards.
This is something we've been looking into for a while, and we're confident that we'll be able to implement a feature sometime in the future that gives players a better storage solution for their tabards. We're not sure if that feature will be a cosmetic tab or a drop-down list similar to titles just yet, though; there's still several factors that we need to consider carefully (certain tabards have on-use abilities, for example, which makes storing them a bit more complicated) before we can settle on the best course of action.
Quote:
A 75 slot tabard only bag and bank slot doesn't sound any more complicated than a 32 slot mining bag.

Is that really the most elegant solution, though? It might be quickest and simplest, but that doesn't mean there aren't better alternatives available. If we can implement a type of storage that's integrated into the character UI and doesn't take up extra bank space, then that would probably be more ideal.
(That option might not be technically possible due to the way some tabards work, of course, but it's something we're investigating.)

For this, give us a huge bank slot or bag or keyring equivalent and then make something pointlessly complex if you wish.

We're not trying to over complicate the situation, but if we're looking at adding a new feature, we want to make sure it's meaningful and appropriate for the game in the long-term. (Or, you know, at least try to.)
Right now, we're considering a variety of options because we agree that tabard storage would be great, and some of those options extend beyond simply adding another bank slot -- not because they're complex, but because we believe they'll make the most sense and feel the best when you're in game.
The basic gist of all of this is that there are a ton of potential options and solutions for the tabard dilemma, some elegant and some rudimentary, and that Blizzard wants to find the best solution to the problem before slapping something together. One of the big issues with tabards is that some of them feature on-use abilities and are treated like items. You would have to find a way to treat a tabard's on-use ability differently if you were to, for example, make tabard selection like that of titles.
I agree that the tabard solution needs to be better than another bank slot and a bag full of tabards. Character customization is one element that Blizzard has been behind on compared to many other MMOs, and these posts make it clear that it is looking for very Blizzard-esque solutions to our concerns. I just want them sooner than later, because easier character customization would be a nice treat. Heck, more robust character customization would be a big treat.

I was hoping for some sort of reference to Star Trek and Tribbles, alas...

Change the on use ability to be "You learn how to cast: Teleport:Argent Tournament Grounds" or something similar. Have the tabard be consumed by the spell and added to the tabard pulldown when used the first time after the patch.
This solution allows you to have the pulldown and get rid of the item while retaining the on use ability.
Do the same for other tabards with on use abilities.

This would be an excellent idea for certain tabards, for sure.
shadcroly Jan 26th 2011 7:54PM
And have the Tabard's on-use ability be treated like a racial ability once learned? That's rather brilliant. *thumbs up*

The only complication I see with this idea is that the ability that some tabards have is to award reputation points from dungeon kills. That sort of ability can't work the way you describe, because you would effectively gain reputation with every faction for whom you have a tabard simultaneously. That would be great, but obviously is not going to happen.

I am not sure of Angus' idea after it has been added to pulldown, but here's how I always imagined it;
When you select a tabard from the pulldown list it appears in your tabard slot just like today and you could use whatever on-use effect it has just like today. In the same way you would only gain reputation with whatever tabard you had displayed.
Kathadelle Jan 26th 2011 9:12PM
I think that would work really well.
@ Broose the difference is the "on use" tabards cast a spell while the rep tabards provide a buff. Just owning the rep tabard doesnt give the rep bonus, you actually have to wear it. so having the tabard in a special tabard inventory wouldn't effect your rep any more than keeping a rep tabard in your bag.

I think a tab that works like the pet and mount tabs would be better than a key ring type bag or drop down, so you can preview what it looks like before selecting one.
Picking a tabard to match your gear from a dropdown of 20+ tabards without being able to preview it would be pretty annoying.

I was think of something similar. You can learn, then lose, then relearn spells, right? You do it when you switch specs or respec. So it IS possible. Couldn't changing your tabard from a dropdown list be similar to chancing specs? When you change to a certain tabard, you gain the spell Portal: Argent Tournament or the passive ability "Champion of the Dragonmaw", then when you switch out, it goes away.

Ive actively held off buying tabards for the simple fact that Im out of space. So while I would love to have somekind of dropdown menu or something unique give us a giant bag in the bank FOR NOW and let it be known its only temporary. That way not an immediate issue so us players have space problems solved and developers can go back to creating something cool and exicting

With the convenient Tabard vendors these days I've cleared out most of the tabards from my bank, keeping only the one-time or special-currency ones just because I'm either a) paranoid I won't be able to get them back or b) don't wanna bother grinding out the different currencies again. All the others I vendor once I've gotten whatever rep it is I was going after.
Besides, I really need to wear my 'of the Achiever' more anyway, so why do I eve need the rest? :D
Thundrcrackr Jan 27th 2011 9:24AM
I've always hated all the special currencies for this very reason. Make purchasing faction things based off rep only and get rid of the annoying currencies! I still have half a bag full of tabards I'm afraid to get rid of because they required special currencies and can't be easily bought back from the tabard vendor.

Instead of a bag in your bank, which would be a hassle to constantly access... why not just have a tabard keyring?
The keyring bag is ultra specialized, doesn't get in the way of other UI, and still allows you to keep keys as an item without taking up bag space.
Something like that for tabards, that hypothetically just grows in size as you accumulate more of them, might make sense. And because it would be still technically part of your inventory, it would already be compatible with the armor-set tools and whatnot.

^ This. This comment cannot be uprated enough.

They mentioned something like that. it just wouldn't "feel the best" for us in game. That reasoning seems fairly stupid. We have a problem right now that needs to be fixed. Why can't they implement a tabard key ring now and then make a more complex, "better feeling" solution later, instead of making us wait and waste all our bank space on tabards until they can figure out how to do the more complicated solution?
Aruhgulah Jan 26th 2011 10:40PM
Or a tabard "closet" instead of a keyring.
We really do need storage solutions for all the fun toys & clothes in the game. I vote for in-game houses that we can buy & store stuff outside the bank. :)
Synchronizor Jan 26th 2011 10:49PM
I really think this would be the simplest and easiest way to do it. Tabards would still be items, so no need to monkey with on-use effects, item sets and macros would work exactly the same, and no bank space would be used. On acquisition, tabards would automatically drop into the tabard bag just like keys do, but they could still be moved into normal bags and/or vendored if the player so desires.
The only downside I see is coming up with a realistic name. Keyring is easy, but what do you call a dedicated tabard bag?
Nopunin10did Jan 26th 2011 11:06PM
It shall henceforth be known as the Coat Hanger.
Throck Jan 26th 2011 11:29PM
"Coat Hanger" is not exciting enough. We need a Portable Portal to the Tabard Plane.
Baba Jan 27th 2011 4:29AM
But imagine how massive this tabard bag would get when you've got 20+ tabards... I'd prefer a drop-down menu with the names of the tabards clearly displayed instead of having to mouse over 20 identical (in some cases) tabard icons, looking at the names.
