The trouble with tabards

After forum poster Dize made a thread called Tabard Spam on the official forums, Blizz blue community manaer Lylirra chimed in with some interesting tidbits about the current state of tabards.
Lylirra RE: Tabard SpamThis is something we've been looking into for a while, and we're confident that we'll be able to implement a feature sometime in the future that gives players a better storage solution for their tabards. We're not sure if that feature will be a cosmetic tab or a drop-down list similar to titles just yet, though; there's still several factors that we need to consider carefully (certain tabards have on-use abilities, for example, which makes storing them a bit more complicated) before we can settle on the best course of action.
Lylirra RE: Tabard SpamQuote:
A 75 slot tabard only bag and bank slot doesn't sound any more complicated than a 32 slot mining bag.

Is that really the most elegant solution, though? It might be quickest and simplest, but that doesn't mean there aren't better alternatives available. If we can implement a type of storage that's integrated into the character UI and doesn't take up extra bank space, then that would probably be more ideal.
(That option might not be technically possible due to the way some tabards work, of course, but it's something we're investigating.)

For this, give us a huge bank slot or bag or keyring equivalent and then make something pointlessly complex if you wish.
For this, give us a huge bank slot or bag or keyring equivalent and then make something pointlessly complex if you wish.
We're not trying to over complicate the situation, but if we're looking at adding a new feature, we want to make sure it's meaningful and appropriate for the game in the long-term. (Or, you know, at least try to.)
Right now, we're considering a variety of options because we agree that tabard storage would be great, and some of those options extend beyond simply adding another bank slot -- not because they're complex, but because we believe they'll make the most sense and feel the best when you're in game.
The basic gist of all of this is that there are a ton of potential options and solutions for the tabard dilemma, some elegant and some rudimentary, and that Blizzard wants to find the best solution to the problem before slapping something together. One of the big issues with tabards is that some of them feature on-use abilities and are treated like items. You would have to find a way to treat a tabard's on-use ability differently if you were to, for example, make tabard selection like that of titles.
I agree that the tabard solution needs to be better than another bank slot and a bag full of tabards. Character customization is one element that Blizzard has been behind on compared to many other MMOs, and these posts make it clear that it is looking for very Blizzard-esque solutions to our concerns. I just want them sooner than later, because easier character customization would be a nice treat. Heck, more robust character customization would be a big treat.

@Baba... 20+ slots for a bag isn't exactly "massive". There are bags over that size already in the game.

"...these posts make it clear that they are looking for very Blizzard-esque solutions to our concerns. I just want them sooner than later..."
But if you actually got it sooner and not "soon", it wouldn't be Blizzard-esque.

This post deserves more than three stars. Here, take the two stars I get for posting and add it to yours.

I'll assume the third one you have now is also mine for the taking.

Personally I think the tabard keyring would work the best of all the options listed. A UI dropdown I think would just clutter up the interface even more. Personally I would just keep the tabard slot on your body/equip screen where it is and then be able to right click a tab on there to open it to new tabards, or bind a hotkey for tabard use.

Adding a drop-down menu under your title selection, on your character sheet does not clutter anything up.

While they're looking into this, I hope they'll consider making tabards look a little less silly on robe-wearing characters. The tucked into the belt looks screams "my mom still dresses me" IMO.
Hangk Jan 26th 2011 7:23PM
Yes! I hate the way tabards look on clothies. I know there's an issue with the lower tabard mesh clipping the robe mesh, so couldn't they apply the tabard texture over the robe mesh? Sure it would look like your tabard was sewn to your robes, but that's better than how it looks currently.

Yes, please! I only wear a tabard on my mage when I'm in dungeons because they look so stupid all tucked into my belt. Looks like I rode the short bus to mage school.

I agree that I'm not fond of the tabard/robe issue either, my mains are priest and mage and there is no getting around that problem.
But in all honestly I just cannot see having the tabard 'skirt' over the robe skirt being good. No matter how I try to picture it. You want to replace a bib with an apron? I dunno, at least I get to see most of my robes as they are now. Throw on the apron and you'd only see the hem of the skirt and sleeves, which would bother me more than the tabard as it is now.

I'll pick tucked in over graphical issues and constant, ugly clipping any day of the week.

@Nopunin10did
Very nice suggestion!
Otherwise, how about a bag within a bag sort of like the Horadric Cube from Diablo 2? :P
Nopunin10did Jan 26th 2011 7:31PM
Apparently I'm not the only one to think this way. Several people on the forums as well as on this site have been saying the same thing.
The keyring thing just seems to make too much sense not to do it. It's a polished solution that already has been shown to work in the game.
Drakkenfyre Jan 26th 2011 7:31PM
No thanks.
The Horadric Cube was awesome because the inventory was so small. But it sucked having to manage another mini inventory.
You think you have inventory problems now? People who have never played Diablo 2, you don't know how good you have it.
Items took up actual spaces. That axe you just got? Took up 6 spaces. That sword? Maybe 6, or 8. Potions? One space each, no stacking. For two of the scrolls, tomes could be purchased which would hold 20 each, and they took up 4 spaces a piece.
There were NO extra bags. Your inventory was your inventory. You had like 30 spaces. You got a bank which to keep stuff in, and even that was barely larger than your inventory. The Horadric Cube, an item which could change items into other items, became a mini expansion inventory. You could also get bigger belts which let you store potions and scrolls.
The expansion added a few slots, and added an extra set of main equipment slots, but your inventory was still heavily limited.

To be fair, Diablo was hardly the only game to do it this way. I still have nightmare flashbacks to Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption along this same vein. Loved that game to death, but the inventory... And the characters mouthed back at you, too. "I am overburdened." "I've no room for that." , etc.
Drakkenfyre Jan 26th 2011 7:16PM
I suggested on here a couple times that Tabards with an on-use ability could be used with a /tabard command. If you use it, and they have one, it uses it.
However making that out for a new player without an actual UI element might be tough, and there might be technical issues behind it.
I would prefer Tabards be learnable like mounts and pets. You get one "general" Tabard you equip, and you select the one you want to display from a drop-down menu. Might even have a "blank" option for those people who want to, for some reason, run around with a grey Tabard.
LouCypher Jan 26th 2011 7:54PM
I think instead of a dropdown, an method similar to how Warlocks summon their pets in Cataclysm (the icon brings up a panel of icons) would be better. Outfitter does this now when you swap items in sets. The tabard page like pets/mounts is a definite must though, so we can see what it looks like without equipping it.

"Perfect is the enemy of good."
Implement now, fix later.
Hangk Jan 26th 2011 7:21PM
Implement now, and unless it's so horrible as to not work at all, it won't *ever* get fixed because there's always more urgent things to do than go back and re-do things that already basically work. Do it right the first time if you want it done right.
