The trouble with tabards

After forum poster Dize made a thread called Tabard Spam on the official forums, Blizz blue community manaer Lylirra chimed in with some interesting tidbits about the current state of tabards.
Lylirra RE: Tabard SpamThis is something we've been looking into for a while, and we're confident that we'll be able to implement a feature sometime in the future that gives players a better storage solution for their tabards. We're not sure if that feature will be a cosmetic tab or a drop-down list similar to titles just yet, though; there's still several factors that we need to consider carefully (certain tabards have on-use abilities, for example, which makes storing them a bit more complicated) before we can settle on the best course of action.
Lylirra RE: Tabard SpamQuote:
A 75 slot tabard only bag and bank slot doesn't sound any more complicated than a 32 slot mining bag.

Is that really the most elegant solution, though? It might be quickest and simplest, but that doesn't mean there aren't better alternatives available. If we can implement a type of storage that's integrated into the character UI and doesn't take up extra bank space, then that would probably be more ideal.
(That option might not be technically possible due to the way some tabards work, of course, but it's something we're investigating.)

For this, give us a huge bank slot or bag or keyring equivalent and then make something pointlessly complex if you wish.
For this, give us a huge bank slot or bag or keyring equivalent and then make something pointlessly complex if you wish.
We're not trying to over complicate the situation, but if we're looking at adding a new feature, we want to make sure it's meaningful and appropriate for the game in the long-term. (Or, you know, at least try to.)
Right now, we're considering a variety of options because we agree that tabard storage would be great, and some of those options extend beyond simply adding another bank slot -- not because they're complex, but because we believe they'll make the most sense and feel the best when you're in game.
The basic gist of all of this is that there are a ton of potential options and solutions for the tabard dilemma, some elegant and some rudimentary, and that Blizzard wants to find the best solution to the problem before slapping something together. One of the big issues with tabards is that some of them feature on-use abilities and are treated like items. You would have to find a way to treat a tabard's on-use ability differently if you were to, for example, make tabard selection like that of titles.
I agree that the tabard solution needs to be better than another bank slot and a bag full of tabards. Character customization is one element that Blizzard has been behind on compared to many other MMOs, and these posts make it clear that it is looking for very Blizzard-esque solutions to our concerns. I just want them sooner than later, because easier character customization would be a nice treat. Heck, more robust character customization would be a big treat.

In 2.2, they changed the audio engine.
They completely removed hardware acceleration, and people who had surround sound setups had to have sound that was on the wrong channels, quit for no reason, bounced around from one channel to another, sometimes would not even play at ALL, a sound next to your character was quiet, while one 100 feet away was overpowering, and was overly loud and fuzzy.
It took them two months to fix the problems, and get hardware acceleration reimplemented.
No, I would prefer them work out the problems before implementing it.

It's not an issue of working out bugs either before or after adding it to the game, it's an issue of fixing a problem now with a workable solution, or putting it off. If your roof is leaking, you may as well put a pot under the leak rather than doing nothing until you have time to fix the roof.

I get the feeling that blizzard is planning greater character customization options as a whole including tabard storage and a dance studio. personally I would like to see dyes and more cosmetic glyphs find their way into the game also.

You had me going there for a second...then i got to the part where you said "dance studio"

There is one thing I don't get though. Many times the developers have acknowledged a problem which will take many months if not years to be solved until they find a solution they consider just right. At the same time there are solutions that are either immediately available through hotfix, or at least available in the next patch. If tabard storage is an issue (and i for one believe that storage of any kind is an issue and the personal bank is extremely outdated) and there is a simple and inelegant solution that can be implemented readily (such as a keyring UI element for tabards or a readily available, massive tabard bag) why not implement something useful now and then do something elegant when you have the time? Is it a mandate in house not to take short term solutions? (they failed to fix certain spec's dps for example for the entirety of WLK because they could not find an elegant solution, but there were certainly less elegant ways to do it and fast). Does the development process in WoW involve poor communication chains that make fast reactions hard? (unlikely if they can hotfix an encounter every few hours like Sinestra). I am truly curious because they seem to spend a lot of time and money on good communication with their players and they do recognize issues relatively fast. Why not act in similar speed?

It's almost as if some problems are more difficult to solve than others...

Seems that something like the mount or pet tab would work just fine with the "summon" function just equiping the tabard in the slot. At that point the use function should be available.

Just add a tab to our main bank space (similar to Guild Banks tabs) and have that as a 'wardrobe' to store them. Obviosuly nothing else can be put in there. Problem solved.

This is what I'd like to see, a general storage space for clothing. I have so much space devoted just to holiday outfits!

Why can't they make Tabards like stances/personal auras? On a separate tab on the spellbook? "Using" the Hellscream Tabard will highlight the grey out ability for Hellscream's Teleportation ability. Changing it to empty or another one grey out that teleportation ability. That ability might: "Requires Hellscream's Reach Tabard" in order to use.
And because there's A LOT of tabards, having so many "spells" might not be ideal. The tab can be called: "Tabard Abilities" and a menu like in reputation tabards to select which one you like to use. That way can hot key the abilities too?

That reminds me of something: How about doing the same thing for a tier set gear? Like having the ability to merge a whole tier gear set (after having collected a full set) into 1 space? I am definitely not looking into selling/destroying any of my tier 1,2 and so on, nor will I be using them, but it's currently taking up a lot of my bank space for them.

I think the Tabard Vendor is a great solution, just expand it.
I have no need to store dozens of tabards in my bank, bags, keyring, or in a drop-down menu (though I wouldn't mind the last one). The Tabard Vendor is kind enough to store them all for me. Just expand his inventory to hold EVERY possible tabard, and just like it is now, grey-out those I am not eligible to wear. I don't even mind paying him a small fee every time I withdraw one of "my" tabards from his stockroom.
Essentially, I do this now. Every tabard that is available for purchase (city factions, etc) I buy once and equip for the achievement count, then vendor. All that is in my bag is the Agent Tourney for teleport, and the bank holds a few that can't be bought anywhere (explorer, etc).

I do like the keyring idea about the tabards, which may be the most simple way to take care of the problem but i had a thought of my own...
How about making the tabards like the vanity pets, or the mounts? could have the tabard tab just like the others, it could also display it on your toon in the preview box and it could still give you the buff for faction bonus if it has it in the same way when you mount up it gives you your mount speed bonus. As for tabards with uses they still could be dragged and dropped on to your action bars.
i think this way would be more in line with what Blizz may want
Tokhand Jan 26th 2011 7:49PM
Maybe they can be learned the way we 'learn' a mount or a non-combat pet, with tabard tab along with pets and mounts. They would still be "seen" on the character equipment screen, where the ones that have an on-use feature (like Tol Barad or Argent Tournament ones) could be used.
Maybe they can even have this Tabard Tab be like the Archaeology Tab, where the tabard could accessed and you could learn about the How and What and Why of it.
I too am also disappointed by the severe lack of tribbles.
Anaxamander Jan 26th 2011 7:51PM
Honestly, while we're on the subject, I'd just like tabards to look less ridiculous on my dwarf chick.
Particularly the Trophy Tabard of the Illidari. Sheesh.
Ctmcstomperq Jan 26th 2011 8:55PM
Personally, I think the idea of adding a cosmetic item page would be awesome.
Then you could always wear your favorite gear looks wise and still have current equipment.

To the Twisting Nether with "elegant." I need bank space now! Give me a damn keyring and sort it out later.
Anathemys Jan 26th 2011 8:58PM
Personally, I think the simplest thing would be to convert all tabards WITHOUT an on-use effect into "titles," in that they would be stored as an option similar to titles, and then convert all the on-use tabards into shirts.
That way, you remove the "tabard" slot on the character frame, but don't have to scew with the on-use tabards too much. Of course, these tabards would overwrite any existing tabard model with their own while active, and display as a tabard instead of a shirt (as tabards are displayed ABOVE the chest slot item, and shirts are below it).
Now, I'm not a designer, so, for all I know, this might well cause the entire world to implode. Or turn into cheese, or something...

I thought of an easy (from my POV not necessarily from theirs) solution. Simply sell one "blank" tabard that you character can wear. Then each time you get a new tanbard it is learned like pets and mounts are now. When you want to wear a tabard you put on the "blank", open your tabard UI and choose from every tabard that you've learned. It's attributes are then copied onto the "blank". With this method there isnt any problem with on use abilities because there is still a physical item to click on.
icepyro Jan 26th 2011 9:17PM
There are two ideas that come to mind. One is the keyring. This seems the easiest to implement as the keyring already exists and is neat, and this would allow the psuedo item it needs to be for on use and slot on the character sheet etc.
The other idea is a tab similar to mounts or pets. This again allows plenty of space, and a /tabard command or something could be implemented for equipping and/or on use, etc.
Sorry but dropdown just sounds horrible. For one, it can make keeping up with them ridiculous. Can you imagine a dropdown when you have the achievement for however many tabards? What of the on use tabards? Blizzard made these collectible like mounts and pets. You wear them. They are visible. Why treat it with a lowly dropdown instead of seeing the icon, etc.?
