WoW Rookie: Reforging 101

As the story goes, the ability to reforge magical items was introduced to Azeroth by the Highborne. We don't really know the in-game lore of how, when, why, or where, but we do have it fairly clearly that the knowledge came from the Highborne.
Reforging allows you to customize your magical items by substituting one secondary stat for a different secondary stat. The stats that are eligible are the ones in green text at the bottom of an item, such as critical strike, mastery, expertise, and so on. (We'll do a full list behind the cut.) You can only swap about 40% of a single secondary stat, and the item must be at least item level 200 or higher. (Items have levels similar to player characters, and those levels help determine how much of each stat bonus that item can provide.)
The stats that are not eligible to be reforged are stamina, intellect, strength, and agility. These stats are considered set in stone and have very little variation in the amount of each stat, even on different items of the same item level. Since that's the case, you can probably see why you're not able to re-allocate those points.
Where
You can find an NPC to reforge your items in each of the major cities. These include:
- Archmage Aranhir Starsinger in Darnassus
- Karabrel Moonlance in the Exodar
- Erdunor Whitespire in Ironforge
- Ithurian Whitespire in Stormwind
- Archmage Pratt in Undercity
- Enchanter Farendin in Orgrimmar
- Enchantress Fire in Silvermoon City
- Enchantress Herim in Thunder Bluff
How
As soon as you get near the reforger, you'll get an interact icon. Click on the reforger and drag and drop your magic item into the window. You'll be able to select from the list of stats to be customized, and the dialogue box will tell you how much it will cost. Reforging costs as much as a vendor will pay you for that given item.
The full list of stats that can be reforged (either reforged into or reforged away from) is thus:
- spirit
- hit rating
- expertise rating
- critical strike rating
- haste rating
- mastery rating
- parry rating
- dodge rating
There is a little bit of a fine art involved in knowing when to reforge your magic items. As a general rule, think twice about reforging green gear. This is because it's likely to be replaced relatively soon in your play time, and if you have limited gold, you might not get any real benefit out of reforging that green item.
Blue and purple gear, however, is usually worth reforging if the stats aren't already perfect for you. Most classes have some kind of "cap" for ratings like hit or expertise. Once you're at that cap, getting more of the stat won't help you. In these cases, reforge away from that capped stat and pick up something else. This involves knowing your class's stat caps (check our class columns right here at WoW Insider), but reforging can really help you get a lot of bang for your buck in this case.
Also, if you're a class that serves more than one role (like a paladin doubling as a tank or DPS), some of the rep gear can be very attractive with a little reforging. For example, the Belt of the Ferocious Wolf is fairly awesome for plate tanks if you swap the critical strike rating for some parry or dodge.
Ultimately, reforging lets your do some pretty creative things with gear that drops. The idea is that you will get more use out of each item if you can customize it, reducing the "waste drops" that were so prevalent in previous expansions. Play around with reforging, and see how you like it. I found that once I got started, I loved it.

www.wowreforge.com is awesome

Shhh, quit telling people about it, youll make the queues longer.

I agree.
Keep in mind though that it's not perfect. The optimization feature is not quite correct yet. Same for the capping stats feature. Use it with caution and do your manual tweaking on top of what it recommends as well.

ReforgeMaster.com is better imo. Much better optimization results (I'd say perfect but that's only my case :) )

wowreforge.com has been updated to make optimization cap aware, and guarantees to find a highest possible (EP-wise) solution.

Don't forget about the addon, Reforgenator, highlighted here: http://wow.joystiq.com/2011/01/20/addon-spotlight-reforgenator/
Spot on if you are playing a new class and don't quite know all the stats that you really need.

Been using it since I read that article. I love that I don't have to do napkin math to maintain my hit cap. :)

I wish you could reforge Resilience off of an item. The PvP rewards are still huge upgrades even with the wasted stat but doing this would help them gain some more legitimacy.

PvP gear is more than good enough for your day-to-day heroic needs even without that sort of ridiculous buff. There's a reason people get PvP gear before starting heroics--the gear you get is largely all-around upgrades from the normal blues you would get from dungeons, rep and craftables. Not only that, but it is itemized to help you live longer (lots of Stamina, mhm, healers love it, yes they do).
PvP gear is more than legitimate already. If they were to allow reforging Resilience off of PvP gear, it would just turn into a slightly weaker version of Tier gear. PvP gear would once again become best in slot pre-raid gear for nearly everyone. That is something I think Blizzard does NOT want to return to (and frankly, me either, for good reason).

Oh I agree that they are suitable for heroics. The problem is that when I run heroics in them, I get snarls of "Oh, look at the guy wearing PVP gear in PVE." It doesn't matter if I'm topping the DPS charts and doing everything right, the gear itself has a stigma of "OMG n00b" that is unwarranted IMO.
Amaxe Jan 27th 2011 2:28PM
If I had to guess, resilience is not removable because it can be easier (or at least was in WOLK) to get a PvP epic than to get into a group where you can get good pve gear. I know I have done this. With my latency I simply don't do heroics/raids, and the PvP gear could be superior to what I had.
I imagine it also works in reverse. People with excellent PvE gear may want to PvP with their same gear without new expenditures.
My *guess* is that Blizz wants to prevent a crossover exploit.

I think PVP gear is fine in heroics as long as it isn't all of it. I think that missing extra stat (haste, hit, dodge or whatever) on one or two pieces is fine, but you lose those stats over half your gear can start taking a toll
naughtyzoot Jan 28th 2011 10:32AM
Maybe for DPS an item or two of PvP is ok, but PvP gear on a tank is *NOT* suitable for heroics. It's simply cheating the requirements to get into a Heroic through LFD with ineffectual gear. Resilence is useless, avoidance stats are key. That is why people balk at a tank in PvP gear in a heroic, particularly the healers, because a tank wearing it is squishy and will cause wipes, no matter how good they are.
Doc Jan 27th 2011 1:21PM
Imo PvE gear should be able to be reforged for Resilience and PvP gear should be able to be reforged for PvE stats. Yes, it will never be ideal but I hate that each PvP & PvE has it's own grind (fun Tax). As a casual player I always feel like I have to pick one area of the game to devote all my time and forget the other just to be competitive. This expansion I picked PvE whereas in the past i went with PvP.

When originally announced I had assumed that Mastery was going to take the place of resilience, and make the gearing difference of PvP and PvE gear vanish.
I assumed wrong, for as Mastery changed to something you got for free at 10 to something you ONLY get from gear after 80, there's still a place for resilience. And due to scaling issues, not everyone likes mastery.
Sadly

Resilience rating is also unreforgable :) Is that even a usable word?

The Archmage Aranhir Starsinger link to wowhead (http://www.wowhead.com/npc=47581) says he is in Dalaran, not in Darnassus.
Is it a Wowhead error?

If spirit is a secondary stat, why isn't it in the green text at the bottom of an item? I'm a tank and this has STILL been bothering me for the longest time.
