I recently started a holy pally (tauren), I'm level 49 (bout halfway to 50). My question is about gear, I did read the Holy Pally 101 and noted the stats I'm looking for.. but do I want spirit now as well as intel? Since the tooltip from some of the talents or abilities mentions a gain from spirit. I know intel is always good: I've got a resto druid, a priest and a healy shaman. Gearing the others (I'm talking about quest gear, some drops from random instances and crafted items from the auction house) hasn't been too difficult - especially the clothy. My problem has been finding plate with intel or spirit. Should I not be wearing plate? I tried searching for some mail items, thinking maybe I should go back to mail armor, but it was a bunch of the same. I did find a couple items with intel, one of them a 2-headed mace. Then I remember reading somewhere about using a single hand and an off-hand. I'm trying to get the right combination of gear before it gets to expensive to fix.

When I leveled my Holy Pally, I used the Shaman Int mail heirlooms. Until you hit 50, it doesn't matter what gear you wear so long as it has int and, hopefully, spirit. Spirit will be the speed with which you regen your mana while in combat. You need it. You need Int, too, because it factors into both your total mana pool and your spellpower. When you hit 50, you'll learn Plate Specialization, giving you a 5% boost to your Intellect when you replace ALL of your gear with plate gear. If you can't find gear good enough, you can temporarily give up that 5% boost until you do.

Dont bother with "only plate" mentality at low levels. You will never get full plate set thats properly better than lets say mail. (shaman pov but same thing in the end: ) Heck, even after 85 I used non-mail because some cloth rep ones were just better (would've losed over 1.5k mana and quite hefty amount of other stats including ofc SP to change to blue items, not really worth 5% more at that time). As for spirit vs intel.. I dont really know for sure but I would safely assume that1) You already heal whole tanks health with one/two heals then /dance around.2) Before 81 your combat ratings are "out of roof", wrath style, so you regain mana even with bad gear and hardly ever go oom even if you might not always use stuff properly to regain mana (judge/melee with Seal of Insight etc). Therefore I would suggest spirit actually since there isnt really haste or crit to speak of. Less downtime (less "go go go what you mean mb go go"). Of course if you find to be in trouble of healing then go for intel for throughput.

Thanks for both replies! @Ice I haven't had trouble healing wearing the pieces of plate that I had. I'd been replacing the mail I had because thats what I thought I was supposed to do. I'd been looking for the spirit/intel or whichever, but I hadn't realized I'd lost as much as I had until some (angry) tank yelled about queueing as a healer without "healer gear", since he'd died twice in Stratholme and then left without waiting for me to say anything. Though we re-queued with another tank, and healing that tank wasn't an issue. Though the group never finished because dps kept leaving and I got tired of waiting and also I was bugged by the fact that no matter how hard I was trying to keep my gear 'right' that it was still making me fail. Today I got a good group and finished stratholme, which I was glad because I was starting to think it WAS my fault. Prior to that I never had issues healing, keeping tanks up even if they had less health than me. Mana really hasn't been an issue, I've hardly ever had to drink, though I do if there is downtime (say theres someone else that needs to mana up). I did look at my gear, and noticed the lack of intel, bought some peices at the ah that I could find. But, both bits of advice are helpful. there is a lot of good cloth gear out there, I outfitted my resto druid in some of it before I went all leather. I hadn't thought about the benefits of mixing and matching.

I want to say that around 55 or so I hit up Alterac Valley to farm honor points and bought gear from the PVP vendors in Stormwind when I hit 60. That put me in a good position when I started Outlands and you'll find that healer plate starts showing up more frequently then.
