This sounds suspiciously like the old "if you light a campfire just before zoning into the raid, item X will drop" or "item drops are based on a formula which uses the number of letters in the raid leader's name as well as the class of the first person that zones into the instance".

Of course, it's just silly enough, it might have been true, too.
