One of the great things about expansions is all the "firsts" we get to experience. For example: my first 310% flight speed, my first time flying in the old world, my first archaeology artifact -- there are so many fantastic things that come with an expansion! However, there are also some rude awakenings. I was surprised when frost came back as a mage leveling spec. I was also taken aback at just how quickly I perished when I tried to take on more than one mob. Let me paint a picture for you.
Here we have this overconfident fire mage coming into Mount Hyjal for the first time. She grabs some quests and heads out to kill some fire elementals. She tags one, and puts Living Bomb up. It proceeds to make a lot of elementals angry with her. She shrugs off the multitude of fiery beings heading her way -- "I'll just AoE them down." That doesn't bode well. Slowly, her life force ebbs away, she gets weaker and weaker, there's a darkness coming over her, and then she's just ... gone.
I stare at my screen. Did that really just happen? Did I seriously just die to my first Cataclysm mob? I quickly look around the room; awww crud, yes, my husband saw that. Well, that's a bit embarrassing! I then take some time to see what the other mages in the area are running as. "Ahem, well I guess I'll go spec frost now ..."
I'm curious where and when the rest of you saw your first Cataclysm demise. Was it due to overconfidence or a wrong spec? Did you make it without dying until your first dungeon?

Barron Geddon....I really should have paid more attention.
And lag for the next several.
Charge the mob and then the world stands still. Then get the "you've been disconnected from the server" message. Log back in and find myself as a ghost.

i'd have to say, my pet still not functioning properly TYVM blizzard! third expansion and still no pet fixes.

After Cata's Launch my first death involved old world flying. I was heading into the Dark Portal in the Blasted Lands and suddenly saw Teremus the Devourer , the rare dragonkin circling the area of the portal. Landed my windrider on the side of the hills above the portal and downed him, after a bit of a scrap. He landed on the side of the mountain, so I figured "ahh I'll fly up there dismount and loot and skin him".
in my best morgan freeman impression..
"Gal still needs somethin to stand on, Gal still needs somethin stand on." Then Major Fail! Being already weakend, I fell to my doom behind the dark portal.
Now involving Cata zones, while killing crabs in the Vashj'ir starting area quests. I was swimming along and a naga attacked my DK..No big deal I used my usual tactic of dropping death and decay to dot him. Umm it works a bit different suspended in water.
Suddenly 5 more naga came piling in as the spell also has an upwards range that doing PvP I was never aware of, seems it also goes up and down about 20 yards both directions when suspended.
DEAD in the water.
Lesson learned, look all around and do that spell only on the ocean floor.

I noticed that the NPC druid tanking Baron Geddon now runs out of the fire when yelling "GET BACK" to encourage players to move.
First death after Cata release was with the new character I started, who made it through all the revamped zones only to experience the glitches of outland, namely the test flight at Toshley Station which sent my character flying high without a buff. I had even kept a new quest reward trinket that gave slow fall but didn't have it equipped as I never had a problem with those quests in the past. I clicked on my trinket but it was the one that summons a goblin doctor, who demanded full payment up front in khorium power cores as I don't have Bilgewater Insurance.

I would have been ganked, I'm Alliance on a Horde heavy PvP server (US-Frostmourne). Quest mobs and their crazy respawn rates didn't really become a problem until Uldum and Twilight Highlands. As a rogue in almost full heroic ICC gear I was at something like 50% dodge at 80, but by the time I was 84 and upgraded to lovely 318-333 blues and greens that figure was down to something like 10% and with less armor than a clothy I was feeling very squishy and died numerous times due to pulling a few more mobs than I could handle.
However it didn't take long to get back in the purples and I'm not feeling quite so vulnerable anymore :)

I took the ORG port to Hyjal, an Alliance hunter put a mark on me, guards did a 180 and killed me... he FDed and walked off.

I leveled as a Prot war through Hyjal, which was fine until I got to the first flamegate quests and got trapped in a little alcove by a never ending stream of instant respawn dwarves who rooted. I probably took down 40+ of the bastards before I realized I was never getting out of there and let myself die.

After the boat sank in Vash'ir, the Horde were only too happy to kill me when I wandered a little to close to their boat looking for soldiers.

A freshly-minted level 85 and a level 72 being jerks while I was questing on a level 22 alt. Yeah, two high levels to take on one lowbie. Was I that much of a threat, guys?

Accidentally hitting a pvp flagged horde amongst questmobs. He and some of his friends decided to smash my face in 2 times before I decided to just wait for the pvp timer (to not be flagged anymore). This was on one of the first quests in Hyjal, I just logged on in Cata for the first time. Great start.

Got lost in Vash, looking for the cave (alliance) to return to... "Oh, there it is!" I pop up out of the water and land on the beach... Oops. Horde cave. Started paying attention to the color of the banners outside the caves, after that...

The quest in Deepholme to interrogate the ogre on the alliance gunship. The stupid ladydwarf's griffon bugged and dropped me off the side of the ship. It's b/c I'm Horde, I know it.

I don't remember at all on my main, but I do remember rolling a Tauren pally and until I hit level 10 I could NOT stay alive. I thought pallys were supposed to be EZ mode.
Must watch the How to Paladin videos for more tips and tricks. Clearly I'm not dancing enough.

My first death happened the moment I landed in Hyjal after riding that dragon. Stupid bugged guards...I remember seeing the pile of skeletons seconds before landing and thinking "Hmm, that's odd..." :P

First or second quest in MTH, being an insanely wrath geared Boomer and looking at the sea of elementals i needed to take down just yards away from the NPC's i thought i had an Einstein moment. "ureka, i know ill just stand by these npc's pop starfall and hurricane and watch them fall at my feet", just as i had seen herds of mammoths and snakes do in wrath.
Yeaaaaaaaa i think I lasted 10 seconds, before I as looking at a pummelled corpse and the wave of people laugh thing at me, (to which I can fully understand) :P
