Nethaera's guide to getting the most from the forums

Nethaera - Getting the Most out of the ForumsWe've gone through a lot of changes in the last year together. Between a brand new community site and a brand new expansion, there's been a lot to adjust to. We want to make sure that the experience everyone has on the forums is the best it can be and wanted to take some time to remind everyone of the things that haven't changed and the conduct that is expected while in them.
Some of the suggestions made seem obvious (read the terms of service and forum guidelines, for instance), but a lot of posts get closed for being off topic or extraneous, so it's probably helpful to go over them again. It's probably also fair to say that some of Neth's points fall under the category of "common sense," or what some folks call Wheaton's Law.
Nethaera - Getting the Most out of the ForumsLastly, while we understand that there has been a lot of discussion on Cataclysm and what the community likes and dislikes about the game, we request that you ensure your thread title and content remains constructive and clear. "I quit" as a title, "Stop whining" as a post, or "If you don't like it leave" are all unhelpful, will likely result in a deletion, and potentially even a suspension in the latter cases. These types of posts are not constructive, they don't help us learn anything, and are often disruptive to the community. If you do intend to leave the game, we of course would love for you to stay and would maybe even like to talk to you about it, but understand as well if you choose to do so. But, please be respectful of those that are here and still engaged in the game. Blue poster text.
Frankly, I'm somewhat disappointed that after more than 15 years of internet, we still can't get a handle on this basic idea. There's a level of civility required in discourse in order for it to be discourse. It's why people like Samuel Johnson and Oscar Wilde are so widely regarded for their wit, because they could insult you to your face in a civil manner and you'd have to give it to them that they did a good job. If you can't be nice, you need to at least be clever enough that it's worth reading.
The point of the forums is to provide a public space for WoW players. If you're not actually interested in making use of a public space but are just there to fling excretions about metaphorically, save yourself the effort. Let people who do want to use them do so without you making it harder for them for no real purpose. Neth's followup post in the thread is useful reading on the issue of what Blizzard actually does on the forums.
Nethaera - Getting the Most out of the ForumsThis thread was simply meant as a means to remind everyone of the Code of Conduct and Guidelines and open up a better dialogue with you all on the current state of the forums. While we understand that everyone wants an answer, or to voice their ideas, we want to make sure that we make it known that we can only answer so much before we are simply repeating ourselves and that if you truly want to be heard, doing so in an existing thread is far better than creating a new thread. We read through a lot in a day and even if you don't see us actively answering something that day or even a couple of days later, does not mean we aren't discussing this here. (Though we try to at least make our presence known even if it seems non-productive to you.)
We could jump in every thread we see and say, "we hear you" but we know that doing so isn't the comfort to everyone that they would think it to be. There is always someone who doesn't like to read (as evidenced on this thread) that "we hear you" because they want action not words. Our actions are slow. Answers take time as does development. If you want us to "fix" things, we all need to be patient. What some may think is a solution, may not be the solution they think. World of Warcraft (as I've said in the past) has a lot of moving parts. It's never as easy as adding "X" or "Y" and calling it good. It's all interwoven and we have to be careful we don't pluck at the wrong thread and unravel it all.

What ultimately comes out of all this is what the forums are not, which is to say they are not a panacea to all ills you may have in the game. Posting a problem to the forums does mean it has a reasonably high chance of being seen by Blizzard, especially if it's in an existing thread so that thread becomes more notable, but it is unrealistic to expect immediate action simply because a post was made. You will have to accept that it will take time for things to go beyond the reading stage.
Forums are a public space for the exchange of information both between Blizzard and players and between the players themselves. That's a big job as it stands. If clogged up with diatribes and insults, they can't do that job, and they can't do another job like serve as a magical wall upon which your heart's desires can be inscribed and immediately fulfilled.

I love the stance against posts that read "If you don't like it then quit!" It's maddening, I can really get into reading "I disagree with you about the Auto disenchant function, I think it helps by..." but get nothing out of "It's Blizz's game, if you don't like it then too bad."
Hangk Feb 3rd 2011 4:24PM
Especially on the official forums, one hears so much baseless, self-serving QQ that it's easy to let "If you don't like it, leave! (And can I have your stuff?)" become one's default attitude towards any complaint.

It's just that people use the forums to complain about the game.
There are things I find frustrating about cataclysm but as a 24 year old in full time employment, it just doesn't bother me that much.
I want Ret DPS to fail less, I want Resto Shammy healing to get better, I want Volatile Air's to have a better drop rate. The Truegold transmute bothers me.
The simple fact is that people have to take the game in perspective. Ya, you pay $15 a month to play, so do I, because its a lot more fun than a lot of games I would otherwise play.
Blizzard knows whats up. They always, eventually, get to your *realistic* issue.

Like most people on the forum, I only post when I think something is wrong. In a game like this where we invest so much time, many people tend to get pretty emotionally invested. That leads to people saying things they probably wouldn't normally say. I've probably threatened to quit over one decision or another. There are of course trolls and jerks everywhere, but I'm glad the forums are there to give us a chance to let Blizz know when we think something is wrong.

"A strange game. The only winning move is not to play. How about a nice game of chess?"

That's how I feel about the forums sometimes. Best to stay away, which is a shame that all the retards ruin a great communication tool.

I think that Blizzard just needed to take a more active approach to community management. The add-on forums have always been good because the developers in charge of UI have either spoken directly or through community members to the community.
The other forums are generally a mess because people tend to troll more when they feel ignored. One of the best things Blizzard has done recently is to have Ghostcrawler write a blog every so often in order to focus the community on legitimate discussions. Imo, that's the one thing that Blizzard has always failed at ... actively engaging the online community. Managing a good community is more about being active, creating fun topics, forums games, etc and less about moderation.
In the end, the success of online forums have basically boiled down to who has the largest number of members, posts and replies. Those success metrics need to be adjusted before Blizzard's forums and forums in general can improve. Success to me is the quality of the posts rather than the quantity. Every time I see a forum filled with trolling, I know that a company just gave up on managing their community.

Rock- "Blizzard doesn't listen to the players/community"
Hard Place- "Blizzard caves into QQers/whiners/elitists"
Rock- "Blizzard CMs never read the majority of forum posts"
Hard Place- "Blizzard CMs often reiterate points they've already made, never give new/useful information"
Rock- "CMs ban people for stupid things left and right"
Hard Place- "Wow forums are useless because of all the trolling and flaming"

Anyone have a link to easily get to the arena rankings? It used to be easy with the armory, now I've only seen it one time and forgot how to get there..

We've had a bit of a problem with over-moderation over on our realm forums. It was recently addressed by Bashiok and the problem has subsided but only because so many people complained. I really wish they would pay more attention to abuse of the "report a post" function, it's use in trolling certain players by getting everything they post on forums removed can get pretty ridiculous. Bashiok says that they look into every report specifically but the difference on our forums before and after we brought our realm to his attention is day and night. Hopefully they'll do the same with other realms with similar issues as well.
Matthew Feb 3rd 2011 5:27PM
Maybe if they required people to post with their entire name -first and last- things would be better!

(note to trolls, I am referencing their decision to do this last year with horrid results)

Recently The Forums have degraded into a caustic environment. The amount of complaining about everything, and the conflict between players is really out of control.
I think this started with RealID.
By backing Blizzard down on the RealID issue, the Forum community felt empowered. Now I think they believe they can change anything in the game by complaining long and loud.

"Recently The Forums have degraded into a caustic environment. The amount of complaining about everything, and the conflict between players is really out of control."
So, business as usual then?
"I think this started with RealID."
No. No it didn't.
People who have the intention to play WoW rather than argue are playing the game and not posting on the forums. Thus has it ever been, since (at least) my joining our little community at the beginning of TBC.
VioletArrows Feb 3rd 2011 6:19PM
@jfofla: Except the trolls and people causing the most problems didn't have a problem with Real ID, knowing they could easily circumvent it and cause as much trouble as they liked, especially for people who would've played by the rules. Yes, there were some misguided idiots against Real ID as well, but that's going to be for every debate ever. Blaming the *long-standing* miserable state of the forums on something recent is backwards.

There have been a lot of quit threads latelty, and the blues seemed to take a bit of a break the past few days. Even MMO-champ mentioned that the blue posts seemed to have dropped off. With the teething problems of the new expansion, there are things that need attention (Tol Barad, ret pallies, shamans, more of the same) and it is frustrating everyone that they still exist almost 2 months in.
carebear Feb 3rd 2011 6:27PM
My disco priest that I loved in Wrath pvp is unplayable now. And like you said, we're 2 months into this thing.
On another note. If I see you leveling a frost mage I'm going to kill you and camp you. I don't care what level you are. I'm going to camp you.
VioletArrows Feb 3rd 2011 6:11PM
Meh, I'm finally done with the forums and the game when my subscription's up in a week and a half. I realized long ago that 99% of the forums are worthless ("you're a stupid bad, get out of my game, don't let the door hit you on the way out"), so my constructive feedback I have on the game and why I'm leaving is going in that box on the unsubscribe page. It likely has a better chance of being read instead of drowned out and deleted because the troggs (I tink it should be changed to troggs, trolls be too awesome to have dat burden, mon) pissed all over the thread.
PeeWee Feb 3rd 2011 10:29PM
I highly doubt they ave the manpower to read all the unsubscribtion messages.
carebear Feb 3rd 2011 6:23PM
The problem is that WoW has really run its course with Cataclysm. There really isn't much that can be done to make the game "better." From this point on it will always be fresh paint on the same old barn. So now you have a bunch of people who are unhappy with the game and have no place else to go at the moment so they're on the forums complaining rather than in the game playing.
And the communities themselves were ruined with LFD and duel spec. LFD meant that you no longer needed people on your realm and people could be jerks with no reprisals. Duel spec took the Role out of RPG. What's the point of having a role in a role playing game when everyone can have multiple roles? It just waters down the whole experience of actually having to choose a role to play.
Also, they should have never allowed people to have both Alliance and Horde toons on the same realm. That was a big mistake.
