Shifting Perspectives: Gearing your feral cat for raiding

So you've read my previous column covering the basics of feral DPS in Cataclysm, and you'd like to give it a try at endgame. Awesome! Let's get you equipped for the task at hand with the gear you'll need to begin raiding.
Most of the items I'm listing are item level 346 and typically come from Cataclysm heroic 5-man instances. You'll have to acquire a mostly full set of ilvl 333 gear to be eligible to enter heroics (via the dungeon finder); questing through Twilight Highlands should get you most of the way there, but I'll include a representative ilevel 333/325 item for each slot to help fill out any holes.
Also, since our best stats (by far) are weapon DPS and agility, ilvl 352 honor PvP gear is a perfectly acceptable substitute until you get the heroic drop you're looking for. Until the patch, four pieces of PvP gear are actually more powerful than equivalent PvE gear, due to the overly strong four-piece set bonus. After the patch, PvP gear will be weaker, but not by much.
Finally, our secondary stats will be very close in value to each other, so don't worry too much about which ilvl 346 item you get. Generally, though, mastery > crit/haste > hit/expertise, for reforging purposes.

Unheeded Warning is a TERRIBLE trinket for feral dps. Mastery and Crit are the best stats by far above all other stats because a Druids bleeds are where your top dps will come from. That trinkets proc won't effect your bleeds at all. Heroic trinkets with mastery will increase your dps more than this every time.

You need to read some patch notes man. As of right now, it's not great. When the patch lands (which he specifically notes in his list), Unheeded Warning will be the best thing you can get outside of a couple drops in raids. It really isn't even close either.
As far as stat priority, Agi is by far and away the best for feral cats. Mastery is a distant second. The only thing Crit is better than is Haste. I won't even mention Hit or Expertise, as both are completely useless right now, unless you are stick on interrupt duty.

So, are we looking at Unheeded Warning over Fluid Death for BIS, then?
Scunosi Feb 6th 2011 11:51PM
I know as a Bear (part-time anyway) I could kind of use this list, but I'm wondering if you know of any pre-raid BiS lists? Basically I don't plan on raiding, especially not with my offspec, other than maybe BH every now and then I guess, so I just want to gear up through Heroics and JP (with VP being hoarded for my main spec).
I was able to find a lovely guide early into Cata for Moonkin, but so far have not found anything for bears except the *ultimate* BiS list and the pre-Heroic list, which is kind of gimp for what I'm running.
If it's really similar to this one, any chance you could just post a quickie with some gear switched around?
And good to know I wasn't totally in the wrong for keeping that Foe Reaper, I haven't used it yet (using Draconic still) but when I asked the guild to compare I got moaned at for having a Str wep. I mean I know Bears want Agi and have for a long time but sometimes an upgrade's big enough it works out, like the Oxheart I used during Icc.

I think for the most part, kitty dps gear is pretty much what you would use as bear, except with different gemming and such. I know agi is very valuable for bears, and there really isn't a lot of "tanking" leather kicking around.
I found a list, and it's pretty much exactly the same as this, except they included a couple items:
- "Wrap of the Great Turtle": Guardians of Hyjal exalted cloak, has strength but also lots of stamina, dodge and mastery
- Lifebound Alchemist Stone (Stam, Mastery)
- The PvP faction trinket with an on-use resistance increase and mastery (Alliance one is called Mirror of Broken Images, from the Baradin's Warden guys, assumable the Hellscream's Reach people would have the same one)
- Jewelcrafting figurine (Figurine - Earthen Guardian) - Loads of stam, with an on-use dodge increase
- "Heart of Thunder": heroic Vortex PInnacle
- "Porcelain Crab": heroic Throne of the Tides
- "Leaden Despair": Heroic Stonecore
Other than that, though, the list is literally the same - you're going for as much agility and stam as you can find.
Alaron Feb 7th 2011 12:20AM
The Bear list is almost identical, actually. Agi is still king, and remains so until heroic raids. Instead of mastery/crir or mastery/haste, though, bears prefer dodge/mastery. You might swap a few trinkets and glyphs, but that's about all. (I use Fluid Death and Tia's Grace as my trinkets, so in my hybrid spec, I can switch back and forth and lose very little. On fights where a tank is only needed part-time (say Halfus or Argaloth) I can go cat for non-tanking periods and still pull excellent DPS.
Cheesesteak Feb 7th 2011 1:22AM
@Alaron:
Do you reforge stats on your bear-cat gear to dodge? Or leave the stats as they are, tilted toward kitty? Also, don't they lack some hp if you just gem for Agi? (Confused because when I used Rawr to optimize a bear set for mitigation, it had me with only 132k hp in bear form, and reforged everything to dodge.)
Sal Feb 7th 2011 5:56AM
@Cheesesteak
Let me say up front, I'm a bear who moon lights as cat, not the other way around. If you plan on seriously tanking, you can use your bear gear to dps, but you would be better off with different sets where possible. Yes, you do want to reforge into dodge as often as you can. If you want to be able to tank when needed, or just for heroics, then no, reforging to dodge isn't really needed.
On the gemming front, I personally gem even my bear gear more towards agility. I'm a JC, so I made my three JC gems stamina, and then agility for most other slots, as well as for my flask. This has worked extremely well for me so far.

If you are looking for a list that ranks all of this gear based on stat breakdowns, you can always check out the Mr. Robot site. (The default stat breakdowns were based off of weights generated by the Mew simulator. They seem to agree with the articles Chase has written as well.)
This is the cat pre-raid list that excludes overly expensive enchants and BoE world drops:
http://www.askmrrobot.com/wow/gear/druidferalcat#v0
Keep in mind that the site doesn't include 4.0.6 changes right now, and it does not look at PvP gear right now either. It will be updated for 4.0.6 when the patch hits, and then soon after support for all the PvP gear will be added.

what's your opinion of the pvp 259 polearm? i replaced seliza's spear with it. i (and i know its stupid) questioned the choice when it dropped my gearscore rankings down some to have it equipped. but if my math serves me right, the extra points you get in the raw dps outweigh the lost secondary stat.
Drednex Feb 7th 2011 2:54AM
I noticed you didn't include the darkmoon card: hurricane in your list. I was under the impression that the static agility on it made it BiS for most agility users. I'm still surprised it's not even listed considering the number of other crafted and expensive items on here.
Saeadame Feb 7th 2011 4:00AM
This is true - the trinket probably should have ranked SOMEWHERE on the list for the static agility alone. I've heard the proc rate for the effect is quite low for feral kitties, though, likely because of the lack of dual wielding that makes it good for some other agility-stacking classes. I guess that trinket is best for enh shammies, what with the nature damage being affected by their talents/abilities/mastery, with rogues in second and survival hunters in third. If you have the kind of money to drop on this trinket, you're probably better spending it on the #1 trinket instead.
Saeadame Feb 7th 2011 4:02AM
On the BiS point, I don't think it would be near BiS for feral kitty. Looking through the list, the top four or five trinkets can give you the same amount of static agility - or near-static with Tia's Grace - and provide better secondary effects or stats.
maniraptor Feb 7th 2011 12:06PM
The usefulness of DMC Hurricane for ferals is also complicated by how it procs. Currently on live, the proc is based on the spell hit cap, not melee. GMs have confirmed that this is a bug that will be fixed, and some players on the 4.0.6 PTR have reported that proc rates appear to be consistent with the melee hit cap.
So, it should be much better for us after the patch than it is now. Will it be as compelling for ferals as Unheeded Warning or Tia's Grace? No way.
Boobah Feb 7th 2011 2:42PM
"...likely because of the lack of dual wielding that makes it good for some other agility-stacking classes..."
A feral cat attacks a little less often than a rogue (combat rogues without Slice and Dice up swing as often as ferals), but the feral likely hits more often, since even without stacking hit the kitty's auto attacks will miss less often than the rogue's.
Enhance and Survival are both slower than cat on number of swings, but they buff the proc with their masteries
Saeadame Feb 7th 2011 4:44PM
@Boobah - I think the proc is a 1PPM kind of thing. So kitties have a chance to proc it once per minute (without haste, etc). Dual wielders have a chance to proc it once per minute on each weapon - so actually double the proc rate of kitty supposing they attack at the same rate. I've heard that for enhance shamans it also can proc off the double weapon hits from Lava Lash and so on, and that it counts as different than the proc from either of the weapons.
Nathanyel Feb 7th 2011 5:31AM
Agree on the wrist, was stuck on 316 green ones for a long time, farmed SFK and Halls (even normal mode) so often... and finally was able to replace them two weeks ago with the ones from Magmaw. Guess what dropped on a daily random SFK run the next day... well, at least I got tank bracers that way. Oh, and I saw 346 Poison Fang last week as well, was disenchanted...
Lissanna Feb 7th 2011 9:42AM
For my caster set, I settled on PvP bracers (and actually had to PvP for them, lol).
ZeroDesu Feb 7th 2011 7:04AM
The nice thing is, I can use this for a Rogue gear guide! 90% of the info is accurate for us as well.
