Around Azeroth: Out of the game and into the streets
Disclaimer: WoW Insider does not condone the cool crime of vandalism. But all things considered, this is a pretty cool piece of vandalism. Mallem of <Inappropriate> on Zuluhed (US-H) recently noticed that the Alliance/Horde conflict has moved out of Azeroth and into meatspace. This construction project sign is on the campus of North Carolina State University in Raleigh, where I live. Nice try, NCSU, but your love of the Horde still doesn't make up for your basketball team.

I remember a few years ago when Adult Swim tried doing a promotion involving a giant Mooninite. Some person spotted the electrical wiring and thought it was a terrorist plot to blow up some bridge (no joke). This photo makes me wonder if there is now a "Horde" entered into some gang or terrorist database.
"This just in, a new gang calling themselves the Horde are taking over the streets of Raleigh! News Channel #x is here to push the police and the mayor for answers!"
Remember, not everyone knows the slightest thing about Warcraft. Someone will see that and think "gang."

Note that you won't find many construction sites for a new "Horde Center." "Alliance" in English generally denotes something good. "Horde," not so much.

Oddly the building pictured in the ad looks like something designed by Stormwind architects delving into modernism.
Larka Feb 7th 2011 11:56AM
Redit beat you to it :P was there two days ago i believe.

STOP HAVING FUN GUYS!
Seriously, I laughed, it's a minor act of vandalism with no form of ability to offend anyone, where I'm from sectarian graffiti is everywhere still so frankly when i see some well done or funny graffiti? I laugh.
Relax...stop taking life so damn seriously, there are much, much, much worse things going on in the world than a bit of harmless, jokey graffiti. Go focus on that if you need a cause.

Note it's the Horde who do vandalism. I get the humor, but still. Unless the rain completely washed it off, that sign owner has to be pissed.
Budman Feb 7th 2011 12:55PM
Ok I think you all overlooked the one comment of the person who said the paint has already washed off. So its not a perm act of terror like you wack job's are making it out to be. Is it that hard to sit back and laugh . GG sense of humor you will be missed ...
RndySasqatch Feb 7th 2011 3:45PM
So true.
Greenjojo Feb 7th 2011 12:59PM
Made me lol. Although Photoshop may have been a better choice, rather than vandalizing the sign - coming from a victim of WoW related vandalism ;). I had a Horde decal on the rear window of my vehicle and some Ally fanboy decided a rock would look better in it's place.

I'm surprised at all the NC folk popping up in here.
Zirco Feb 7th 2011 1:10PM
Totally not cool and this post should be taken down, IMO. You can say you don't condone vandalism, but your actions speak louder than your words.

Yet another blow for the legitimacy of gaming in the media's eyes.
Leave it to some kid to not be able to think of any way to make the same joke without committing a crime.
ka1zot8 Feb 7th 2011 1:41PM
"Won't somebody please think of the children!?"
It'll encourage ppl to go out n commit vandalism? Don't we credit ppl with any brains anymore?
Yeah it's wrong but it's not being condoned by Wowinsider and i doubt there is alot of mindless zombies running out with paint spraying "For the Horde" all over now. The majority of ppl have more sense even if they do find it amusing.
shadcroly Feb 7th 2011 2:08PM
@Scooter
I'm really hoping that this is just a photoshop. As Sir Broose points out below, vandalism is not good, and I shudder to think that some of the more zealous Horde fans might start to think that doing this is a good idea...
StClair Feb 7th 2011 2:16PM
Ah, WoW players.
"It doesn't harm ME, so what's the problem?"
carebear Feb 7th 2011 3:28PM
Ha. I wonder how many of the people here defending the destruction of private property for their own amusement get bent out of shape when someone trolls their random dungeon.
Ronin Feb 7th 2011 2:19PM
Gonna add my voice to those who are saying this isn't cool. The vandalism itself isn't cool, and it's beneath WoW Insider to feature it with such a *winkwinknudgenudge* "we don't condone it" that in fact implies you _do_ condone it.
I know it probably just seemed funny at the time, but IMO it was poor judgment to post this. Sorry, Elizabeth, it didn't work as intended.
Those of you saying "lighten up" and "no one (that I care about) was hurt" are not really presenting legitimate arguments. Those are just things people say that have an emotional appeal without any actual logic to back it up.
Tenken32 Feb 7th 2011 2:59PM
...And 'vandalisim isn't cool, and jokes about it are beneath me' is a legitamate point.
unbrokn Feb 7th 2011 3:06PM
"Those of you saying "lighten up" and "no one (that I care about) was hurt" are not really presenting legitimate arguments. Those are just things people say that have an emotional appeal without any actual logic to back it up."
But It's not my property that's being damaged/vandalized. Therefore, it's all good.
/sarcasm
Ronin Feb 7th 2011 3:12PM
Yes, it is. It's making a statement about the issues, rather than ignoring the statements and issues they bring up by saying "chill out, man".
"Chill out", "lighten up", "it's only a joke"-- those passive-aggressive phrases have been in use for decades, and only mean one thing: I cannot argue with your point, so I will try to shame you into dropping the issue.
