Gold Capped: How to farm Maelstrom Crystals

The Maelstrom Crystal used to be disenchantable from an easily crafted epic. This was hotfixed, and the prices have unsurprisingly shot through the roof. People still want their gear enchanted, however, and for some reason these things keep appearing on the auction house. Where are they coming from? How can you get them? This article will discuss the current cheapest methods for getting them.
Everything I talk about, I cribbed from someone
My sources are many and mysterious, but today I'm going to let you in on a little secret. My very best source of information is often the "count" field in Wowhead. What it's saying is that of all the people who run their data collection addon (an effectively random cross-section of the playerbase), here is the number who reported having gotten one of these. Sorting by it is not always statistically useful because it will show data based on old systems. For example, it will take a while for something to overtake the alchemist's stone now that it can't be disenchanted any more. Still, assuming you're well informed, it can be a very useful tool for research.
Just the facts, please
Right, on to business. Here are the best two sources I've seen for Maelstrom Crystals.
- Chaos Orbs can be turned into epics by a few professions. Most notably, blacksmithing's Elementium Stormshield and Elementium Earthguard, as well as any of the engineering killshades, only require a single orb. The engineering ones are BoP so are only an option to engineers who also happen to be enchanters.
- PvP and PvE epics are available for conquest and valor points. Valor points are probably not best used for making shards, because so long as people are willing to pay tens of thousands of gold for the BoE boots, that'll be more money for your points. The cheapest conquest-bought epics are often turned into shards, though.

A word to the wise: check your markets. Sometimes the cost of selling those epics can outweigh the cost of maelstrom crystals. Craft an item at little to no cost to you, sell it on the AH, then use that money to purchase the crystals you need, with some cash to boot.

1. Get Guild
2. Raid
3. ????
4. Enchants!

Shortest post ever.
Usefull though ;)

I originally wrote it as a news piece, but they tacked my column header and stuff in. I have a ton of little things that are too small to be full articles, but should probably be posted.

Basil, I would love to see the little news bits (sooner rather than later).
A "news briefs" package for Gold Capped might be very useful to those of us who are looking for ways to gradually improve our cash flow, but don't have time to pursue big AH projects.
/Cheers for the quickies!

Just curious, but can the epics that you can buy from rep vendors be disenchanted? Can one buy the epic, disenchant, and sell the shards?

^ A search based on "Disenchants into Maelstrom Crystal" and "Requires reputation with Any". This search yields no results. So sadly, no :(

No.

They're not Disenchantable.
Shinhan Feb 8th 2011 4:11AM
They cost less than 200g to buy, and almost everybody has exalted rep with at least one Cata reputation. Do you really think Maelstrom crystals would be so expensive if rep items were disenchantable?

"Chaos Orbs can be turned into epics by a few professions."
Both "Chaos Orbs" and "epics" link to the chaos orb item. I donno if that was on purpose, just thought i'd let you know.
icepyro Feb 7th 2011 7:40PM
Note that the epics link takes you to the "reagent for" section of Chaos Orb, which lists all the epics that can be crafted with Chaos Orbs.
Basil Berntsen Feb 7th 2011 8:12PM
Yeah, I can't really control the mouseover.

Rep epics are disenchantable, but what about Tailor crafted epics that require no chaos orbs ie dreamless belt ect they require only 4 pieces of dreamcloth
Necromann Feb 7th 2011 7:47PM
Dreamcloth noncooldown uses chaos orbs. The other dreamcloth have a week long cooldown.
icepyro Feb 7th 2011 7:52PM
I don't have any high level tailors, but it seems to me that I believe dreamcloth can only be made once a week per volatile type, or infinitely with 5 orbs per, which means that in the end it actually makes epics more expensive to make with dreamcloth, or at least more time consuming, than with other professions. I haven't looked into it personally, however, so I may be wrong.
bmsones Feb 7th 2011 7:58PM
Rep epics cannot be DEed.
rhorle Feb 7th 2011 8:25PM
It would take 4 dreamcloth to make the cheapest tailor pattern that can be de'd into a crystal. 4 dreamcloth with no cooldown takes 5 chaos orbs. Or you can make 5 per week using 30 volatiles (one dreamcloth for each type of volatile). Its not really worth it to use chaos orbs for crystals.
The 4 dreamcloth belts go for higher or just above the price of the crystals. So there currently isn't a good way to farm crystals from tailoring. If blizzard allows us to buy chaos orbs or makes them boe then there will be a great way, but I don't think they would keep the tailor patterns the same if they did that.
Shinhan Feb 8th 2011 4:15AM
At my server value of Dreamcloth is ~800g. Maesltrom Crystals vary between 1k and 2k. So disenchanting tailoring items is waste of money. 1 orb crafts look nice, time to level my BS :)
Necrosaro Feb 8th 2011 4:55AM
It's 5 Chaos Orbs per piece of Dreamcloth. So that's 20 orbs. And getting 20 orbs is a difficult process, even as a tank or with a guild with instant queue times, that's roughly 10 hours worth of dungeons to make a single piece of gear.
