The Queue: Alex talks mostly about RIFT due to lack of anything better

Oh, Monday. I hate you. Not because I have to go back to work, no. I already work on the weekends, so what's the difference? No, I hate Monday because there are no questions to answer in The Queue after the weekend, and you're all quite tired of reading me complain about it! Today will have a couple of brief WoW questions, and then I'm going to talk about RIFT because some of you were curious about the game and that's what I spent my weekend playing.
Many of you asked:
Is patch 4.0.6 releasing this week?
Almost certainly. There's always a chance that Blizzard will run into a game-stopping snag that prevents patching, but assuming that doesn't happen, the patch will be tomorrow.
maxmd29 asked:
Why can't my worgen learn the Schematic: Mekgineer's Chopper? I click on it for him to learn and it goes through the cast bar to learn it but when it gets to the end, I get an error saying that I can't learn that spell.
The schematic is race-locked so that only Alliance players can learn it. Blizzard never updated the item to include the worgen in the racial restrictions. In patch 4.0.6, this will be fixed and your worgen will be able to learn the schematic just fine.
ScytheNoire asked:
Are you guys going to turn into RIFT Insider? I sure hope so.
Ha, no. RIFT is a really terrific game, but WoW is still our first love here at WoW Insider. If you really do want to read more RIFT content though, head over to our sister site Massively. They do an excellent job covering general RIFT news, and they also have a weekly RIFT column. It's good stuff.
Dytheryn asked:
That RIFT commercial says it's not Azeroth anymore ... but how different is it? Is it better than WoW? Worse?
That's a hard question, because I really don't like comparing things to WoW! It's pretty unfair to set other games up against WoW, especially here on WoW Insider where obviously all of you are very big WoW fans.
RIFT is very much like World of Warcraft. The UI is similar, the gameplay is similar, and you'll recognize most game mechanics as very similar. To some degree, I imagine that's completely intentional. WoW is the bare standard for MMOs now, so you want your game to be easy to pick up and play by those that are accustomed to the industry standard.
The quests do not stand up to Cataclysm's questing. For the most part, it is a return to the "kill 10 rats" ways of the past. I was not bothered by that at all, however. The quests are there to give you something to do between the real meat of the game: rifts/invasions.
Rifts open randomly all over the world. Sometimes they're minor invasions, and you just need to beat up some monsters with other players in the area to stop it. Sometimes it's a major invasion in which the world becomes bathed in flames and elite demons thunder down the various roads that converge on your quest hub to lay siege to it -- these events usually have some zone-wide goal to aim for, and people must cooperate across the entire zone to be victorious. Defend this objective from the invasion, ensure this area is not overrun, protect that relic, destroy the enemy's relic. It's a beautiful chaos.

Is RIFT better than WoW? In some ways it is, in some ways it isn't. I can't tell you which game you would like better, and I hate weighing two games against each other to pick a victor. I can tell you that I'm not quitting WoW for RIFT, but I do intend to play RIFT quite a bit.
If you plan to check the game out, do yourself a favor and play past the starter quests. The introductory quest chain is just to set the scene for you. You don't really get to dig into what the game has to offer until after that. It would be like giving up on WoW before you leave Northshire Abbey.

here's a question, what's the most HPS you've seen a level 85 resto shaman do in a raid? My guild has been looking for a new healer after a few of our core raiders decided to stop playing wow and we've tried out two seperate resto shamans in BoT. On halfus Wyrmbreaker, I (a holy paladin with a 352 item level) and my resto druid friend (with a 357 item level) do around 12k hps while every shaman I've seen has done on average 5k hps and at some attempts 7k hps.
My question is, "are resto shaman that broke? is this common or did I get a couple of players who didn't know their class?"
Sky Feb 7th 2011 6:09PM
A little bit of both. Logs from raiding guilds have shown that resto shamans have the lowest healing right now and paladins have the highest but the gap shouldn't be that big. 4.0.6 should close that gap even more. Another thing you have to remember is that you really have to take healing meters with a grain of salt. It is not an accurate way to gauge performance especially with the healing system in place in Cataclysm. Remember that healing teams should be working together and not against each other

The Queue should feature Christine A. Butchering the National Anthem.

Where exactly do you go when you enter the portal to the bastion of twilight? Where is the bastion of twilight and how is it a horizontal instance when the tower is clearly vertical?
MikeLive Feb 7th 2011 5:45PM
Most instances seem to lack the real-world physicality compared to in, most of the time it's a lack of space (like ICC), but Bastion of Twilight really bothers me, it seems to not exist anywhere.

I have noticed recently while questing that I seem to have an extra companion. It's a small boar named Mud. He's not in my companion list and shows up while I have another companion out. Any ideas what his deal is? Thanks.
spotastic Feb 7th 2011 8:17PM
You must be a jewelcrafter. When you use the trinket, Figurine - King of Boars, Mud follows you for the duration of the effect. The Earthen Guardian trinket has a similar earth elemental companion.

I don't think RIFT is supported on Mac, so there'll be some WoW players out there who simply won't be trying it, unless they're running Boot Camp or Parallels Desktop. That's one thing about Blizzard, they do cross-platorm well.
Scunosi Feb 7th 2011 8:30PM
Geez, if you're looking for material to write about other than RIFT, how 'bout going through a backlog of comments? I'm sure many were skipped due to being answered or vague, but personally I have quite a few I'd like to see tended to that never were, and I really don't feel like looking them all up again. >.>

'During the RIFT beta, when players would ask in general chat what they should spec, others responded with "whatever you want."'
Let's see how long before the game is overrun with forum sheeps parrotting the mantra of SPEC THIS OR DIE!!
Game designers simply cannot make up for sheer stupidity of the players.

Where is my bat form? I was promised my troll could become a bat. If this isn't happening, can my bird form at least contain the colors of two rainbows?
Rimshot Feb 7th 2011 10:07PM
You get it in the patch tomorrow.
thall1463 Feb 7th 2011 10:04PM
I recently noticed that Blizzard billed me an extra dollar, at the same time but separate, when they billed me for my subscription. Why did they do this and/or is there a way to stop the extra payment?
Artificial Feb 7th 2011 10:23PM
A $1 charge is usually used as an attempt to determine if a credit card is valid. If you use a pay at the pump gas station, iTunes, or many (if not most) online merchants, and you watch your CC status like a hawk, you'll see $1 charges appear and disappear all the time. The extra payment will be automatically reversed within a day or two, and end up never even showing in your bill.

What exactly made WoW Insider decide to use blue as the color for 3-star posts?
razion Feb 7th 2011 10:59PM
What makes Thor'idal the Star's Fury Legendary? Who did it belong to?
dragonjc Feb 7th 2011 11:15PM
Readingva above post made me think of something. How come guild wars pvp, and holidays so much better than wow with all of the other mmo's copying us why don't we copy them?
Wonk Feb 7th 2011 11:17PM
RIFT is going to be free this weekend via OPEN BETA. Why wonder what the game is like, go give it a whirl... decide if it's fun.
If you are a veteran MMO player the UI will be very friendly so no learning curves, jump in, earn a few levels... find out for yourself it blows or glows.

If we have an idea for a (fairly) time-sensitive article, how would we go about making a proposal? I had a brief thought about an economy-related issue which rapidly turned into a wall of text. In lieu of posting that comment, I thought I'd see about proposing it as an article.
Quasi Feb 8th 2011 12:07AM
Possibly too late for a response, but just incase!
I have been doing some bgs while leveling and have found people in full brutal gladiator at level 70, I assumed it was through those old BoA items that give 1k exp from wintergrasp, but after solo capping it at 9 in the morning and checking the vendors I saw those items are long gone. Is there a new version available through Tol Barad or some other means, or are people really farming that much honor for level 70 pvp epics?
