The Queue: Alex talks mostly about RIFT due to lack of anything better

Oh, Monday. I hate you. Not because I have to go back to work, no. I already work on the weekends, so what's the difference? No, I hate Monday because there are no questions to answer in The Queue after the weekend, and you're all quite tired of reading me complain about it! Today will have a couple of brief WoW questions, and then I'm going to talk about RIFT because some of you were curious about the game and that's what I spent my weekend playing.
Many of you asked:
Is patch 4.0.6 releasing this week?
Almost certainly. There's always a chance that Blizzard will run into a game-stopping snag that prevents patching, but assuming that doesn't happen, the patch will be tomorrow.
maxmd29 asked:
Why can't my worgen learn the Schematic: Mekgineer's Chopper? I click on it for him to learn and it goes through the cast bar to learn it but when it gets to the end, I get an error saying that I can't learn that spell.
The schematic is race-locked so that only Alliance players can learn it. Blizzard never updated the item to include the worgen in the racial restrictions. In patch 4.0.6, this will be fixed and your worgen will be able to learn the schematic just fine.
ScytheNoire asked:
Are you guys going to turn into RIFT Insider? I sure hope so.
Ha, no. RIFT is a really terrific game, but WoW is still our first love here at WoW Insider. If you really do want to read more RIFT content though, head over to our sister site Massively. They do an excellent job covering general RIFT news, and they also have a weekly RIFT column. It's good stuff.
Dytheryn asked:
That RIFT commercial says it's not Azeroth anymore ... but how different is it? Is it better than WoW? Worse?
That's a hard question, because I really don't like comparing things to WoW! It's pretty unfair to set other games up against WoW, especially here on WoW Insider where obviously all of you are very big WoW fans.
RIFT is very much like World of Warcraft. The UI is similar, the gameplay is similar, and you'll recognize most game mechanics as very similar. To some degree, I imagine that's completely intentional. WoW is the bare standard for MMOs now, so you want your game to be easy to pick up and play by those that are accustomed to the industry standard.
The quests do not stand up to Cataclysm's questing. For the most part, it is a return to the "kill 10 rats" ways of the past. I was not bothered by that at all, however. The quests are there to give you something to do between the real meat of the game: rifts/invasions.
Rifts open randomly all over the world. Sometimes they're minor invasions, and you just need to beat up some monsters with other players in the area to stop it. Sometimes it's a major invasion in which the world becomes bathed in flames and elite demons thunder down the various roads that converge on your quest hub to lay siege to it -- these events usually have some zone-wide goal to aim for, and people must cooperate across the entire zone to be victorious. Defend this objective from the invasion, ensure this area is not overrun, protect that relic, destroy the enemy's relic. It's a beautiful chaos.

Is RIFT better than WoW? In some ways it is, in some ways it isn't. I can't tell you which game you would like better, and I hate weighing two games against each other to pick a victor. I can tell you that I'm not quitting WoW for RIFT, but I do intend to play RIFT quite a bit.
If you plan to check the game out, do yourself a favor and play past the starter quests. The introductory quest chain is just to set the scene for you. You don't really get to dig into what the game has to offer until after that. It would be like giving up on WoW before you leave Northshire Abbey.

KMPlayer is capable of playing the files, I'm not sure exactly how they are encoded but KMPlayer has the codec to play the WoW cinematic movies.
So download KMPlayer, then go to your World of Warcraft Folder and open Data/Interface/Cinematics.
You'll see all of the various in-game cinematics there as .avi files. Open them w/ KMPlayer and you're set.

It depends on what cut-scenes you are talking about.
Cut-scenes like Wrathgate, The Fall of the Lich King, or the Goblin/Worgen zone endings, yes, you might be able to watch them using that player talked about above because they are actual movies (an actual file to play).
But cut-scenes that are used majorly in the Cataclysm 80-85 zones are not movies. It is real ingame action playing out in a phased zone. The "camera" in those cut-scenes is the same one that you always have behind you in regular play. In the cut-scenes that camera is disconnected from its usual place and is moved around to show you the different angles of the cut-scene.

I recently won a need roll on Sorrowsong (on my shadow priest) against a resto shaman, who then proceeded to lambast me about "rolling on my healing gear". Am I completely misreading the tooltip, or is Sorrowsong totally not healing gear?
Shuckles Feb 7th 2011 11:23AM
I wouldn't worry too much, Fletcher. http://www.wowhead.com/item=55879 clearly states that the trinket is procced off of your damaging spells that get a target below 35% health. I'm afraid your healer just seemed a little misinformed and quite a bit rude to boot.
Kendro Feb 7th 2011 11:24AM
No, the resto shaman is just upset that you won a trinket he wanted, for whatever reason. Sorrowsong is primarily a dps trinket.
I'm guessing he was going to use it for an ele off spec, although he could have also attempted to use it as resto, but it would just be awkward and inefficient, as he'd have to spec into Telluric Currents and cast lightning bolt once every 20 seconds to maximize uptime on the trinket. This would be unwise, as most bosses will often have some mechanic that will cause them to put out more damage at low health, meaning you don't want to waste a gcd or two on something that isn't keeping everyone else from dying.

"Your spells that damage a target below 35% health grant 1512 spell power for 10 sec. "
Doesn't sound very healer-ish to me.
Avengleyne Feb 7th 2011 11:52AM
He should have lambasted you for rolling on gear that sucks for your spec.
Then Lambasted himself for caring about an item that sucks for his spec also.
In case you missed it, Mastery sucks right now for SP's (& Resto Sham's according to our resident ones). Both the dmg & proc rate components are pretty weak right now for Shadow when compared to Haste or Crit. Stacking Haste will increase the proc rate but at low gear levels this is hard to do, espcially if your trying to break into raiding. (Damn hitcap)
However to answer your question - Its a DPS trinket.
pinteresque Feb 7th 2011 12:01PM
lolwut?
"Equip: Your spells that damage a target below 35% health grant 1710 spell power for 10 sec. Cannot activate again for 10 sec after bonus expires."
How could that in any way be useful for a healing anything? I mean, unless you were smite-healing, but it would be so unreliable that...yeah. That shaman was either yanking your chain, or an idiot.
Aticus Feb 7th 2011 12:03PM
The resto shammy probably wanted it for his Elemental off spec. Don't worry about it. You won it, enjoy it!
mhm Feb 7th 2011 12:55PM
Sorrowsong is for sure a dps trinket. Honestly, I am getting a sick of all the dps rolling on healing loot, I am not talking about , boomkins, ele shamans, and shadow priests. I am talking about the magi and warlocks that roll on the healing loot 90% of the time. I know reforging is super cool but there is no logic in taking loot from a healer, unless you want to never be healed again. Please grow up people, stop being rude and wait for your loot like the rest of us.
Bapo Feb 7th 2011 12:59PM
Wouldn't flame shock proc the trinket effect? I don't have a high level caster, so I don't actually know.
But yeah, definately dps trinket.
@Aveng
This is why reforging is a great thing
Saeadame Feb 7th 2011 1:00PM
Maybe the Rshaman was getting it confused with the BoE healing trinket Rainsong. I know I kept getting them confused XD;
Kaphik Feb 7th 2011 1:57PM
Sorrowsong is a dps trinket, and there's much better ones for healers. Seems the shaman was just being greedy and trying to make it look like you were.
Anyway, there's a cool thing about the trinket: it procs off of critter kills. So right before a pull if you want a spellpower boost kill any little critter that happens to be in the area, like the little spiders in Stonecore or the rats in SFK to give some examples. Have fun!

So, my hunter has an issue where, when his pet is first summoned, they
start with really low health, like about 7k at level 85. After 1-5
seconds, it gets back to normal, but he can be killed during that
time. I guess this has been a problem in the past, but with pets
scaling so much with my health, it is very crippling. My question is,
has Blizz mentioned any chance of fixing this?
Arbolamante Feb 7th 2011 11:34AM
My lock has the same issue, but never 5 seconds worth. Generally one second and the minion is up to full health. I'd suggest lag, but then you would be seeing evidence of that everywhere, not just the pet's health bar.
Mortenebra Feb 7th 2011 12:04PM
It's been posted up and down and all around the bug forums but no word from a Blue poster yet. The issue has been happening since the Shattering/pre-Cata and it still hasn't been looked at or fixed.
Kinda sucks when I dismount and try to get a quest mob/item only to have my pet get one-shotted. Melee hunters ftl :(
Tokhand Feb 7th 2011 12:38PM
My frost mage's Squirtle has this issue too. It seems to be an issue that they addressing in tomorrow's 4.0.6 patch. It has been A Thing for me only in PVP, mainly in a Tol Barad battle.
Bapo Feb 7th 2011 1:01PM
What's really bad is when it does a double bug, he gets brought out with low hp, and his health doesn't jump back up >.
ameie409 Feb 7th 2011 1:44PM
Well, that's annoying. I do wish they would at least acknowledge the problem and tell us soon(TM) or say that it's something that can't be fixed easily. As a BM hunter (I know, it's "teh failz" spec, but I love my big red pet) I would really love for them to say anything about it.
Boobah Feb 7th 2011 2:59PM
It's not a new bug by any means; it's been an issue ever since pets (and it affects all of 'em) started scaling at all. The critter spawns, then scales, and then heals to their new full.
As long as the pet doesn't get hit, I've never seen them not top off, and sometimes they'll fill up after taking a (non-fatal) hit. And then there's all the times they'll take a quick hit and the game decides that that's where the pet's health level will stay.
It does seem to be a smaller window for it to bug than it once was, but I'm not sure if that's random chance or if Blizzard has actually improved things; I don't play pet classes as much as I once did.
