The Queue: Alex talks mostly about RIFT due to lack of anything better

Oh, Monday. I hate you. Not because I have to go back to work, no. I already work on the weekends, so what's the difference? No, I hate Monday because there are no questions to answer in The Queue after the weekend, and you're all quite tired of reading me complain about it! Today will have a couple of brief WoW questions, and then I'm going to talk about RIFT because some of you were curious about the game and that's what I spent my weekend playing.
Many of you asked:
Is patch 4.0.6 releasing this week?
Almost certainly. There's always a chance that Blizzard will run into a game-stopping snag that prevents patching, but assuming that doesn't happen, the patch will be tomorrow.
maxmd29 asked:
Why can't my worgen learn the Schematic: Mekgineer's Chopper? I click on it for him to learn and it goes through the cast bar to learn it but when it gets to the end, I get an error saying that I can't learn that spell.
The schematic is race-locked so that only Alliance players can learn it. Blizzard never updated the item to include the worgen in the racial restrictions. In patch 4.0.6, this will be fixed and your worgen will be able to learn the schematic just fine.
ScytheNoire asked:
Are you guys going to turn into RIFT Insider? I sure hope so.
Ha, no. RIFT is a really terrific game, but WoW is still our first love here at WoW Insider. If you really do want to read more RIFT content though, head over to our sister site Massively. They do an excellent job covering general RIFT news, and they also have a weekly RIFT column. It's good stuff.
Dytheryn asked:
That RIFT commercial says it's not Azeroth anymore ... but how different is it? Is it better than WoW? Worse?
That's a hard question, because I really don't like comparing things to WoW! It's pretty unfair to set other games up against WoW, especially here on WoW Insider where obviously all of you are very big WoW fans.
RIFT is very much like World of Warcraft. The UI is similar, the gameplay is similar, and you'll recognize most game mechanics as very similar. To some degree, I imagine that's completely intentional. WoW is the bare standard for MMOs now, so you want your game to be easy to pick up and play by those that are accustomed to the industry standard.
The quests do not stand up to Cataclysm's questing. For the most part, it is a return to the "kill 10 rats" ways of the past. I was not bothered by that at all, however. The quests are there to give you something to do between the real meat of the game: rifts/invasions.
Rifts open randomly all over the world. Sometimes they're minor invasions, and you just need to beat up some monsters with other players in the area to stop it. Sometimes it's a major invasion in which the world becomes bathed in flames and elite demons thunder down the various roads that converge on your quest hub to lay siege to it -- these events usually have some zone-wide goal to aim for, and people must cooperate across the entire zone to be victorious. Defend this objective from the invasion, ensure this area is not overrun, protect that relic, destroy the enemy's relic. It's a beautiful chaos.

Is RIFT better than WoW? In some ways it is, in some ways it isn't. I can't tell you which game you would like better, and I hate weighing two games against each other to pick a victor. I can tell you that I'm not quitting WoW for RIFT, but I do intend to play RIFT quite a bit.
If you plan to check the game out, do yourself a favor and play past the starter quests. The introductory quest chain is just to set the scene for you. You don't really get to dig into what the game has to offer until after that. It would be like giving up on WoW before you leave Northshire Abbey.

Quel'danas and Azuremyst were not designed with flying in mind, many polygons are missing to make places like Silvermoon viewable from the air.
Garnlok Feb 7th 2011 12:28PM
The skies around the Exodar are filled with radiation from the shattered core, so go ahead and fly if you convince your mount to grow extra limbs that barely function. The High Elves are so paranoid that either the allience will launch a massive invasion to counter the undead one or that Sylvanis will crack the rest of the way and decide to try to kill everyone that anything flying not on a dragonhawk gets blasted before they check to see what it really is. This is also why Lotha'mar continues to be the easiest of the horde leaders to kill in a raid, none of the guards are paying attention to the ground.

It's because BC content is now the red headed step child of WoW. Another "oversight" is every dungeon in the game has a map, EXCEPT BC dungeons/raids.

I love me some RIFT. Very polished game. I'll probably carry a concurrent sub with WoW.
Ambershanks Feb 7th 2011 11:32AM
We hung out at the Rift booth a lot last year at PAX, and IMHO, its nothing more than a WoW clone. Yes, there are differences, of course. But the UI, the gameplay, down to the icons and colors for loot are exactly the same.
I find the "You're not in Azeroth Anymore" add to be sad at best.
Moreover, I really dislike that there are no 'monster' races. I'm sorry, but I don't want to play a human in a fantasy world... >.>
Wolfbeckett Feb 7th 2011 1:09PM
Way to prove you haven't played it. There are similarities but it's not a clone, there's a lot of newness here to like.
Kunikenwad! Feb 7th 2011 1:34PM
I heard WoW was an EQ clone. Creating something new requires basing the creation of what has come before. Calling RIFT a clone and leaving it at that is disingenuous. It creates a very comfortable environment for WoW players and then proceeds to show how it is different; graphics, soul trees, roots, faster gameplay. It could differentiate itself a bit more if it wanted, but as is, RIFT is exceptionally well-polished and a hoot to play. Your mileage may vary, however.

Am I unique in having no interest in Rift whatsoever?
Infinite Duck Feb 7th 2011 11:54AM
Not really, I use a mac (flame on, I use them at work so my personal computer is a mac.) Most of the new MMOs are windows only, so I don't even bother to look at most new MMOs. This is the only reason I still play WoW, it plays on mac.
Though I will say, I am curious a bit. So far I'm disappointed with the races. That's one thing I love about WoW. Races are so different in most cases. It often easy to look at someone's character and know what it is. Rift seems to be all human like races. Nothing interesting like walking goats or cows.
I doubt if I was to quit WoW it would be for another MMO. I'm tired of community issues in these types of games.
MikeLive Feb 7th 2011 11:59AM
Huge Apple lover myself - have two Macs and an iPhone :), among various accessories and software. That's actually one of the reasons that I'm disinterested - WoW has arguably the largest Mac population of any game around, due to Blizzard's strong support of the platform and similar target markets. Pretty much any MMO on the market should be trying to take WoW's customers away - by ignoring Mac, they're cutting off a significant market that has no real competition besides WoW.
SaintStryfe Feb 7th 2011 12:36PM
I think it's not surprising the largest MMOs by subscription rates - WoW, EVE and CoH - all have Mac clients, while some major games - Warhammer, Conan, ect - do not have them or added it much later, and I think suffered for it. Any MMO that gets a Mac client gets my attention and at least some support (I have paid for EVE and CoH, even if I didn't stick with them).
Mac owner don't get some of the game selection (though that's quickly changing - thank you STEAM!), but we tend to be passionate about the games we get.
One stupid question I haven't cared to look up: Is Rifts based on the old PnP game?
/really want an old school White Wolf MMO, where you could choose Kindred/Garou/Chosen/Ressurrected/ect and can play in a persistent world based on that.
//with a Mac client of course.
ambermist Feb 7th 2011 12:46PM
I'm actually very disappointed. Although I run WoW and other MMOs and RTS games just fine, I couldn't play my RIFT beta this weekend. The first couple of hours were playable, although barely. When the first rift event began to occur, my latency shot up to a consistent 980ms and dropped me to 1fps. I turned every single setting to the absolute bare minimum, and still it was impossible to play. For now, that ruined it for me. Every time I attempted to log on after that, it was the same scenario. I finally gave up yesterday morning, when it had been over 36 hours of unplayable performance.
Flint Feb 7th 2011 1:14PM
I hadn't even HEARD of Rift before the past few Queues.
Rictus Feb 7th 2011 5:32PM
@SaintStryfe: while it would be hilarious, Rift sadly isn't based on Rifts.
And if I'm not completely mistaken, the EVE guys (or at least the Company) is developing a WoD-MMO. Vampires, if I remeber correctly.
Last but not least: to be fair, the Mac client for CoX came rather late in the game's lifetime, but it does exist and that's more than a lot of other games offer.
Dreyja Feb 7th 2011 5:42PM
I'm with you there. I have no interest in RIFT and I'm completely lost on the whole Mine Craft explosion. I look at the videos and honestly think, "You would need to pay me A LOT to play this tedious, pointless game." :)
But different strokes eh?
MikeLive Feb 7th 2011 5:43PM
Actually I've been played Minecraft for several months and a recent surge of interest has been severely cutting into my WoW time :)
Dreyja Feb 7th 2011 8:26PM
@ Mike - I will never understand but evidently I'm the odd one out on this one. It seems like every second youtube video is about minecraft. /shrug /yawn
Artificial Feb 7th 2011 11:20PM
Zero interest in Rift. Intrigued by ToR but probably won't buy it. Waiting with bated breath for Guild Wars 2.
GrandOldDuke Feb 8th 2011 7:25AM
^ What that guy said. My investment of time and energy in WoW is too great at this point to swap over to something that is, by all accounts, not particularly different. But on the basis of what they say they want to do with Guild Wars 2, I am already prepared to drop WoW and never look back.
Sintraedrien Feb 7th 2011 11:52AM
I'm just wondering who put this tribute in game: http://www.wowhead.com/npc=50513
Because I think that is totally awesome. (even if I'm wrong and it was a random coincidence)
Sintra E'Drien of the Ebon Blade, né Sindorei (Totally loving the Worgen- can you tell? ;)
