I was leveling a druid over the weekend when I encountered one of the most tragic figures in WoW lore: Pamela. I had mixed feelings about seeing her. First, I had hoped that her story would be advanced further and that we would see greater closure for the young Redpath. On the other hand, Pamela's story is nearly legend, and I think WoW would suffer without its poetry.
I was also reminded of Darrowshire by Cranius, for obvious reasons. While the video covers an older version of the quest, it still captures the basic essence of Darrowshire's story. Cranius does a brilliant job of relating the spirit of the quests in his own lyrics, so it's more than worth a rerun for anyone who might be new to machinima. Interested in the wide world of machinima? We have new movies every weekday here on WoW Moviewatch! Have suggestions for machinima we ought to feature? Toss us an email at moviewatch@wowinsider.com.
I'm an old man, I've seen a lot in my life. Lost a lot of friends through work, I worked in a very dangerous industry. I've lost family to accident and disease. The latest was my sister. I never cried.
But every damn time I watch that I get tears in my eyes, damn you Cranius, damn you.
The quest is exactly the same as the old version except its now soloable and everything is done around the darrowshire area instead of across 2 zones. Its still one of the best quests from vanilla and its even better now because everyone gets to experience it now when they level up (provided they level in EPL).
No offense -- Darrowshire was one of my first and most beloved wow machinima -- but hasn't this video been posted far too often, on this blog and others? It's mentioned anytime a discussion on WoW machinima is undertaken.
To be frank, I'd rather see a piece of middling work by a current machinimator than dusty old vinyl of a video like this. At least then those of us that follow the community of machinimators might be exposed to something we overlooked or have our own new favorites brought to a wider audience.
I stumbled upon the video AFTER doing the quest line and tearing up at the end of it. I remember riding out of Darrowshire thinking, "This was amazing".
I was worried they were going to remove it in Cataclysm and am so glad it's still there. I think this video and "The Lament of Captain Placeholder" are my two favorite Cranius videos so far.
For those who haven't been through the Plaguelands, you board a caravan and pick up people along the way in side quests. Completing the quests (or talking to someone who needs a ride) recruits them for the caravan. For each person you get, you can choose a buff. There's a ranged/melee damage proc, a spell damage proc, a chance to find a couple extra silver in mobs, an XP boost, a knockback proc, a heal after killing a mob and a run speed increase.
Or, if you want, you can do the Darrowshire quest chain. Pamela's Doll gets added to the caravan and the accompanying buff lets Pamela run around, following you, as a non-combat companion. There's no actual gain for game mechanics with the buff.
Of course, being the pragmatic player that I am, I went with the Pamela's Doll buff. You can't live a little kid alone with all those nasty ghosts lurking around.
I chose to have Pamela accompany me too. It just didn't seem right to leave a girl all alone in that deserted village when she doesn't even know that she's a ghost. In the past this has been a quest-chain without a positive resolution. At least now we can keep her company!
Until we realize how helpful that knock-back buff is, at any rate ;)
I'm not someone who follows machinima closely, but to me, Cranius is one of the very best creators, not because of the videos (only) but because of his songs, this one being one of the best.
That song is beautiful. I loved it so much the first time I heard it that I bought the iTunes version. One of the best WoW-related songs ever, IMO. Even after all the times I've heard it, it still makes me mist up a bit almost every time I listen.
There are a few quests that I do with EVERY alt.... The Lady's Necklace on the Horde side, Crusader Bridenbrad in North Rend and this one for the Alliance. The depth of emotion still amazes me in a GAME! Granted, I am an old softie. I cry at Folger's and Budweiser commercials... But I am so glad that WoW has these moments.
I love this video and every thing that Cranius seems to put his touch to. If you don't own it already, you can buy the album on itunes. ;) It's part of my regular play list.
I'll never get tired of these classics being shown here. It gives the rest of us something to shoot for.
So many players are not passionate (and not interested) enough to wait for actual quest line ending when father returns to Pamela... I'm always waiting for him near Pamela and camp fire, drinking tea...

As a reader for a year or two now, I understand the sentiment; on the other hand, It's Always New To Someone. (As it was to me when I showed up here.)
