We recently asked our intrepid WoW Insider staff about some of their favorite machinima. First up among the answers is Dawn Moore's favorite, Slashdance vs. Ulduar. In this movie, a raid group prepares to face Ulduar, only to find the raid is much more difficult than they were expecting.
This is what Dawn has to say about the video:
The setup is so perfectly wanky. The use of those long pans with some epic score has become so cliché among novice film and machinima makers in recent years that you kind of groan when you see them. To see the fourth wall come down on it at the end is absolutely delightful.
Interested in the wide world of machinima? We have new movies every weekday here on WoW Moviewatch! Have suggestions for machinima we ought to feature? Toss us an email at moviewatch@wowinsider.com.
Oh man, Delightful isn't even the half of that end scene. I used to raid with a Guy who sounded JUST like that, and would often Spout that on a /endraidnight due to wipefests......
I guess being an Australian should put me in a position to explain this.
Wank is pretty much how you put it as "self-pleasuring" while Wanky is usually used to describe something as kind of pompous, indulgent and/or pretentious with each one of those pretty much describing the early parts of the intro.
To my understanding, the lingo originated from Commonwealth nations and we use this kind of language fairly often in Australia. If you think having two very similar spelling words but with different meanings is confusing, then you should know that there are plenty of other words related to the act of "self-pleasuring" (Wank) such as Wanky, Wanker/Tosser (pretty much the same), and Wankered. All of which pretty much refer to things or people being (but not limited to) pretentious or obnoxious and whether or not is is being used in an insulting fashion (calling someone a Wank or Wanker is considered an insult.)
Wankered is an exception as it is used to define someone who is pissed (slang for drunk.)
The more you know.
I for one accept Dawn's use of our vulgar lingo and (unintentionally?) causing confusion and misinterpretations amongst readers. Bonus points if she isn't a 'native' speaker.
@ Bouncing Punt-Target: One of my best friends is Welsh, I dated a Scot for a year and lived with other UK expats for three years. I know what it means, there's just a certain amount of purposeful ignorance I employ to a) play with the language and b) avoid people getting too serious.
I loled once again! I'd forgotten about this lovely little video. :D I'll have to put this one up on the guild website as a motivator. ;) Or, just a reminder to keep a sense of ha-ha through the wipes.
I love this video! That's our guild! I mean, it's not exactly, exactly our guild... we're not the people who made it. But that's how all our raiding goes. Even the way OTT 'I'm a hero' music at the start is ourselves psychologically buffing ourselves up for the evening to come! *splat*
I thought the intro was amazing, but to each their own I suppose. I find 95% of most Machinima awkward and weird. So the long epic pans etc, when done right, stick out quite a lot :P

"The setup is so perfectly wanky."
Is that meant to say that, or is it a typo?
quasarsglow Feb 8th 2011 12:23PM
I'm pretty sure its written as intended. I mean, a lot of those long intros featuring one's main are pretty self-pleasuring.
Also the word wank is fun to say.
wank wank wank

Always a favorite. The honest side of raiding.
Nothing else to add, Dawn's quoted description nails it.

Oh man, I remember when I first saw this video. I almost bust a gut laughing. And I did the same watching it today. I really do like Sedrin's videos.

All I have to say is: "Please don't post Blind or Boom De Yada (WoW) again."
