Breakfast Topic: What pop figures deserve an Easter egg in WoW?

Just this past year, I've fallen in love with a television show called Dr. Who. For all of you who do not know what the show is about, it first aired in the 1960s, and it is about an alien who can change his face and goes traveling through time and space with a human girl in a spaceship that looks like a blue box that is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. If that turns you off based the level of geekiness from that last sentence, don't worry -- it gets a lot worse.
But as I learned more about the history of the show, I always ended up asking myself, "Where is my Time Lord in WoW?" We are all aware of the fact that Blizzard is not afraid to put popular references in WoW, with Lady LaLa and Haris Pilton -- but why not put in a well-respected science fiction character? The thing that kills me is that there is an excellent place to put the Good Doctor into WoW that makes it seem natural: the Caverns of Time. It would seem like a great fit, a place where heroes can witness significant events and fight to correct them.
What about you guys -- who think should get a nod from Blizzard? Do you stop and ask why there are not five teenaged NPCs running around fighting monsters in five different-colored outfits? Or do you think that adding more and more of these fourth wall-breaking nods ruins the game, similar to what people say that Harrison Jones did to Uldum?

It's nice to see someone else who loves it as much as me, Matt Smith's pretty awesome tbh :D Chris Eccleston not so much imo

Also, for that matter, he is 'Doctor' or 'The Doctor'. The 'Who' is just part of the show title.

Smith is great, but I think a lot of that comes from the fact that he's (finally) got a great writer behind him. Tennant had so much potential, but I got so sick of Davies' constant "he's practically a god" imagery (see: The Titanic episode, for example) when the whole point of the Doctor is that he's NOT a superbeing but rather just some guy who gets into trouble. Between that and him CONSTANTLY bringing back characters over and over and over again completely erasing any emotional investment in their original departure, I was sick of the show near the end of Davies' run. And don't get me started on Donna Noble...
My favorite though? Eight. The movie sucked balls, but in the spin-off media, he's amazing. Six is also up there (again, thanks to the spin-off material)

Well if we are being technical about it his name is The Doctor. Doctor Who is just the usual mis-understanding
'Its the Doctor'
'Doctor Who?'
'Just the Doctor'

Isn't he called just "The Doctor", while the series is called "Doctor Who"? At least they never referred to him as "Doctor Who" in the old series...
cyanea85 Feb 12th 2011 9:33AM
"The Doctor" or "Doctor" is still his name, not his title.
(What I mean, he introduces himself as "The Doctor", but when other people are referring to him, it's always "Doctor". For example, "You will be EXTERMINATED, Doctor.")
Just like the name Junior. It's an actual name. You wouldn't call a guy named Junior "Jr. Smith".

It is "Doctor Who". But he is actually called The Doctor. And that's not his name, anyway. He has a name, but only one other person knows it that I am aware of.
And David Tennant is the best.

Ummm
It's actually 'The Doctor'
He never has referred to himself as Doctor Who(?) - that's merely the response from his answer to 'Who are you?'
ie
"Thank you for saving us from those nasty Daleks - who are you?"
"I'm The Doctor"
"Doctor who?"
Nobody calls The Master "Master Who"...

Asheron's Call has a TARDIS out in the middle of a desert I believe.

See, this is a tough question. The devs are about as big as nerds as we are, and all the good shout-outs have already been made in one form or another!

Captain Malcolm Reynolds. Firefly.

Couple of firefly references in northrend, most notably a poison vendor in amberpine lodge.
also, the firefly non-combat pet used to have flavor text relating to the show.

Fitting that Kaylee became an engineering trainer. ^_^

lol Had a guild bank guild with the name " I Aim to Misbehave" You wouldn't believe the people who knew the reference.
neminem Feb 12th 2011 4:23PM
Yeah, I'm still sad noncombat pets no longer have the ability to have flavor text... I don't normally care about noncombat pets at all, but I grinded for that firefly back when it was selling for a thousand gold and a thousand gold was a lot, simply because its flavor text was from my favorite line in my favorite show. (Namely, "still flying".)

Am I the only one offended that the Firefly references are ALLIANCE characters? Weren't the members of Serenity, by and large, against the Alliance?
Arcticwolf Feb 12th 2011 8:34AM
I love the Doctor Who idea, but the TARDIS doesn't fit with the story. Instead, perhaps the Doctor and a companion can be quest-givers in the Caverns of Time.
Another I would like to see is Belgarath/Garath from the David Eddings books The Belgariad/The Mallorean. He would be an old man with mismatched clothes, but would be able to do the most amazing magical "tricks".

Those are among my favorite books ever. EVER. I used to love them just because they were so uncomplicated, warm, funny, and entertaining. I'd pull them out every few months and read through them in a couple of days...it's my equivalent of watching my favorite movie on a rainy day.
And then I read that he wrote the books after deciding to combine as many fantasy tropes as he could into one story. I fell in love all over again as now it became a game to see how many tropes I could find and identify.
Such great books.

Anyone who knows me knows that I'd say the Doctor first, but he's already in the article, so how about...
...A member of the Kirin Tor (with "Wizzard" written on his hat) valiantly running away from danger?
...A wizened old goblin hermit in a swamp somewhere? With strange syntax he speaks perhaps.
...SI:7's greatest field agent, Osgood Bright? Would you believe he once defeated fifty orcs while armed with nothing but a pen knife? Ooookay, would you believe twenty trolls while wielding a machete? How about three blood elves using a bazooka?
...Azeroth's greatest consulting murloc detective, Holmes? He can solve a case faster than you can say, "Mrwlglrlwrgl!"
Toothy Feb 12th 2011 10:32AM
Osgood? How about R. Trieve, just Don
