Breakfast Topic: What pop figures deserve an Easter egg in WoW?

Just this past year, I've fallen in love with a television show called Dr. Who. For all of you who do not know what the show is about, it first aired in the 1960s, and it is about an alien who can change his face and goes traveling through time and space with a human girl in a spaceship that looks like a blue box that is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. If that turns you off based the level of geekiness from that last sentence, don't worry -- it gets a lot worse.
But as I learned more about the history of the show, I always ended up asking myself, "Where is my Time Lord in WoW?" We are all aware of the fact that Blizzard is not afraid to put popular references in WoW, with Lady LaLa and Haris Pilton -- but why not put in a well-respected science fiction character? The thing that kills me is that there is an excellent place to put the Good Doctor into WoW that makes it seem natural: the Caverns of Time. It would seem like a great fit, a place where heroes can witness significant events and fight to correct them.
What about you guys -- who think should get a nod from Blizzard? Do you stop and ask why there are not five teenaged NPCs running around fighting monsters in five different-colored outfits? Or do you think that adding more and more of these fourth wall-breaking nods ruins the game, similar to what people say that Harrison Jones did to Uldum?

There needs to be a Harry Dresden reference somewhere.
Even if it's just a talking skull named Bob.

Could not agree more. And/or a hunter trainer named Doroga with a pet kodo, and some worgen NPCs by the names of Varg or Nasaug.

I thought fewer people would get the Codex Alera references, so I didn't mention it, but those should be in there too. ^_^ I was very disappointed when I couldn't name my warrior Doroga. Had one named Kitai for a while, though I later realized it wasn't quite the appropriate class for her. Heh!

I've got a hunter named plain-old Marat, and two worgen named Torang and Gradash, both pretty obscure, but Varg and Nasaug were already taken.

You guys don't know how proud of the wowinsider community, wow players, and Blizz right now. As far as I know, Justin Beiber is not represented in game in any way and nobody has suggested him. That made my day!

Frankly I'm surprised there aren't more H.P Lovecraft references given the whole old gods thing...*cough*Cthulhu*cough* Or you know what I'd love to see, a Monster Squad reference. With the intro of the worgen a certain quote comes to mind "Wolfmans' got nards!?!" And even RP players can get behind such things, you just have to treat the pop culture homage as now having its own little niche within the SL and not simply scream "That is SO ooc"
Jiffah Feb 12th 2011 1:32PM
All of the Old Gods thing is directly influenced by Lovecraft. I don't think they can push it any further than that.

With all the cat-people around, Uldum should have been called Ulthar. ;)

I think the community has taken the ball with Mankrik and run for a touchdown with that one.

I still want a Jurassic Park reference.
There has only been 2, that I am aware of. one that I can't remember off the top of my head, and Insect in Amber (you know that's a reference.) But there is nothing large, no NPC's, nothing else.
And we need more Star Trek references. Having two dozen NPC's, several quests, several objects, and Micheal Dorn (Worf) doing character voices is not enuf!
And did you know there is exactly one Sailor Moon reference, which very few people get? http://www.wowhead.com/npc=24840
Sailor Vines, drop the rest of the name, and you get Sailor V.
MusedMoose Feb 12th 2011 9:20AM
With all due respect, it's a bit of a stretch to call that a Sailor Moon reference. If the character had long blonde hair, maybe, or if she was wearing something closer to what the anime character wears, then I'd agree with you. But I think it's just a sailor whose name happens to start with V.
Drakkenfyre Feb 12th 2011 9:56AM
Along with NPC's such as Sailor Picardo (reference to Robert Picardo, Voyager's EMH) and Sailor Phillips (reference to Ethan Phillips, Neelix) I don't think it's too much of a stretch considering they couldn't just name the NPC "Sailor V" (notice I am saying it's a reference to Sailor V, which was a semi-fictional character played by Sailor Venus) and considering the character is a sailor, it would be out of place to put her in a dress. I would be willing to bet it's a reference. The lack of blonde hair does seem to prove it's not.
If someone else knows an actress who's last name is Vines, I would be open to suggestions.
Drakkenfyre Feb 12th 2011 9:59AM
And now that I think about it, if you pronounce the name different, pronouncing it as two syllables instead of one, "Vi-nes", it sounds like it.
It could be, it could not be. I guess we will only know if Blizzard says something.
