The whole formal announcement thing is great and all, but I had just assumed that there was going to be another season. It never even occurred to me that they had to get "renewed".

Agreed, though I've been wondering when we'd hear about the new season so this is just extra good news. :D :D

Yeah, it looked odd to me the renewed part as well, I thought The Guild was indie, but I guess, with how they have been growing Sponsorship was needed to do the next season.

They have been sponsored by first MSN and then Xbox live for several seasons. The very first season started off as Indie -- which really just means that everything came out of Felicia Day and the Producer Kim Evvie's (might of spelled that wrong)'s pocket but as this is a -web- based show the budget is very, very small. Sponsorship allows them to have enough money to provide sandwiches to the crew for putting in long hours, upgrade their equipment, pay for better, more natural props etc etc.
The show itself has grown by leaps and bounds over the last few years in terms of graphics, additional locations etc. All of this costs money.
This show has a high caliber production to it. It's not just one guy holding a digital camera and uploading to youtube, it's much more in depth than that.

I never said or meant to imply that it was "just one guy holding a digital camera and uploading to youtube". I was already familiar with all of the stuff that you told me, and all I meant to say was that there was never any question in my mind that if they wanted to make another season, they would make it happen.
Suppose for the sake of argument that all of their existing sponsors dropped out. Do you think they would just say, "Well I guess we can't do another season"? I don't think they would. I think they would first look for other sponsors, and I don't think they would have any trouble finding new sponsors. Even failing that they could raise a lot of money through merch sales and I'm sure a lot of people would even be willing to donate money if it meant getting another season and their name in the credits or something. The bottom line is, the only way I could imagine this show ending is on its own terms. They have the tenacity to get it done and would not be willing to just abandon the project if things got tough.
