They have been sponsored by first MSN and then Xbox live for several seasons. The very first season started off as Indie -- which really just means that everything came out of Felicia Day and the Producer Kim Evvie's (might of spelled that wrong)'s pocket but as this is a -web- based show the budget is very, very small. Sponsorship allows them to have enough money to provide sandwiches to the crew for putting in long hours, upgrade their equipment, pay for better, more natural props etc etc.
The show itself has grown by leaps and bounds over the last few years in terms of graphics, additional locations etc. All of this costs money.
This show has a high caliber production to it. It's not just one guy holding a digital camera and uploading to youtube, it's much more in depth than that.
