Breakfast Topic: What's your favorite piece of music in WoW?
World of Warcraft is a game with great sound and great sound design. Players might not always notice it, but for those of us who play with the music on, these themes can really set the tone for the game. Ashenvale music never fails to remind me of my first foray into the zone; after Darkshore, which was a bit bleak, my baby druid stepped into Ashenvale and it seemed like all of Azeroth opened up, wide and colorful and filled with swelling orchestral tracks. Though the game world seems much smaller to me now, I still remember that moment whenever I hear the Ashenvale theme.
My favorite piece of WoW music, however, has got to be the one in Mulgore. I play mainly Alliance, so I don't go there often, but every time I visit the zone for the Darkmoon Faire or head to Thunder Bluff for some holiday achievement, I'm struck by the beauty and tranquility of the Mulgore music. It really fits the environment, and it never fails to relax me when I fly through. The slow, soft yearning reminds me of the Tauren people and their culture, while the undercurrent of tension hints at the conflict brewing in the world outside that secluded valley.
What's your favorite piece of WoW music? Does it remind you of a particular time or a nostalgic feeling, or is it the pure beauty of the composition that you admire? When do you feel the WoW music is at its most epic?

While I enjoy the new music in Orgrimmar (gets the blood up), Hyjal's music does a good job of putting forth a sense of urgency, and the Goblin music fits them very well, I'd have to say the music in Vashj'ir is my favorite of this expansion. It's got a haunting quality I dig.

There is a piece of music I often here when I’m in SW that sounds very much like the music from Freelancer in the Kusari system (the oriental system). First time I heard it I had a very nostalgic moment ;)

Grizzly Hills of course, with the Dun Morogh theme a close second. Honorable mention is the awesome "Northrend Boat Music" theme which differs depending on whether you take the trip at night or day.
I also like the Avett Brothers.

There's lots of memorable music in WoW, but when the topic comes up the first thing that always comes to my mind is the fiddle music from the Grizzly Hills zone. Simple, yet so unmistakable for anything else.

Grizzly Hills music--I prefer the day theme, personally. (I'm a fan for the bagpipes)
Night music can die in a fire, though.

The instrument in question is, I believe, the Nyckelharpa, a swedish keyed fiddle. Very cool sound to it.

Grizzly Hills for me, too. Storm Peaks is a close second. Haven't heard anything yet in Cata to beat those.
(Thanks for the link, ctishman, I've been calling that "fiddle" music, but I knew that wasn't quite right.)
Also like the ORIGINAL Orgrimmar music. Something about those opening drums...

Even though I am Horde now, I've always thought the Night Elf zone music was beautiful. My very first character was NE, so I was listening to that while learning the first 10 levels of the game and becoming enchanted with World of Warcraft.

I agree with you here.
I think a lot of us started out with Night Elf characters, for whatever reason. Teldrassil has a nostalgia that will never be forgotten. The music and scenery there still bring me back to that time when I first logged in to the game.
I've been Horde for years now, but I still have a deep fondness for the Night Elf starting zone just for the memories that it invokes.

Most of the Night Elf music is really good. I love the music that plays at Maestra's Post in Ashenvale now.

@Straz
I think this is BY FAR one of the best Battle themes in the game. The first time I heard it it really pumped me up and got me in the "I must have revenge" mood (I'm NE).
Everytime I hear this song I get goose bumps for its epicness *_*

Night elf music for me too. The one piece reminds me a little of Enya. Second is the music in/around Azuremyst. When I first started playing I didn't listen to any music but the sounds of wow. Later when I did start listening to the radio I would turn it off when I went there for any length of time. I also agree that the music in WoW is pretty awesome. I know they can't make original music for every single zone but it kind of bugs me that they play the Argent tourney music now at light's hope chapel. Ironically I like how they play Icecrown music in the rest of EPL.

Grizzly Hills' zone music sends shivers down my spine.
JT Feb 16th 2011 8:22AM
Yeah, best music in the game, bar none.
Too bad the questing in the zone didn't live up to it.

Grizzly Hills and Sholazar were the only Northrend Zones I liked for leveling! All the other tried to hard to connect disjointed storylines, whereas GH and Sholazar accepted how untame a zone they were and allowed it to be. I loved the Daily Questing hubs in GH too, they really were relevant enough to get repetitive yet when I was leveling I didn't mind grinding them for how much experience they gave.

Hands down "Shards Of The Exodar" the music you often hear while questing in the Dreanei starting areas. I find it very emotional and stirring, that and it reminds me of the soundtrack from BSG.

I love the Tauren music - by that I mean the piece they play when you enter Thunder Bluff.
And Northrend, all of it really but especially Howling Fjord and Grizzly Hills. Or any Nordic/Vrykul themed area.
LucaBS Feb 16th 2011 8:20AM
I love the celt music in Nagrand, i think its perfect for the zone.

Tanaris, hands down, every time. The woman's melodic voice is just so haunting...
