Breakfast Topic: What's your favorite piece of music in WoW?
World of Warcraft is a game with great sound and great sound design. Players might not always notice it, but for those of us who play with the music on, these themes can really set the tone for the game. Ashenvale music never fails to remind me of my first foray into the zone; after Darkshore, which was a bit bleak, my baby druid stepped into Ashenvale and it seemed like all of Azeroth opened up, wide and colorful and filled with swelling orchestral tracks. Though the game world seems much smaller to me now, I still remember that moment whenever I hear the Ashenvale theme.
My favorite piece of WoW music, however, has got to be the one in Mulgore. I play mainly Alliance, so I don't go there often, but every time I visit the zone for the Darkmoon Faire or head to Thunder Bluff for some holiday achievement, I'm struck by the beauty and tranquility of the Mulgore music. It really fits the environment, and it never fails to relax me when I fly through. The slow, soft yearning reminds me of the Tauren people and their culture, while the undercurrent of tension hints at the conflict brewing in the world outside that secluded valley.
What's your favorite piece of WoW music? Does it remind you of a particular time or a nostalgic feeling, or is it the pure beauty of the composition that you admire? When do you feel the WoW music is at its most epic?

I even make macros of some of my favorite music, for when I need something inspiring, or if the current zone's music is annoying me. The below song from Zangarmarsh makes me feel worlds better.
/script PlayMusic("Sound/Music/ZoneMusic/zangarmarsh/za_generalwalkuni04.mp3")
I don't sit at the log in screen forever but I still want to hear the theme music:
/script PlayMusic("sound\\music\\cataclysm\\MUS_shattering_UU01.mp3")
Ashenvale's music was one of the reasons I came back to WoW a couple years ago:
/script PlayMusic("Sound/Music/ZoneMusic/enchantedforest/enchantedforest03.mp3")
I also adore Lament of the Highborne and used to watch the BC credits often back then, here is the music:
/script PlayMusic("Sound/Music/GlueScreenMusic/BCCredits_Lament_of_the_Highborne.mp3")
The PlayMusic command in the macros will fade out the current music and replay the listed music over and over until instance zoning(switching continents or entering dungeons), or uncheck and then recheck Music under Options>Audio in the main menu and the normal zone music will resume.

"Totems of The Grizzlemaw" (the Grizzly Hills music) is in a neck and neck battle with "Thaurissan's Reach" (which plays in a lot of dwarf zones, Grim Batol, and is, I do believe, the music that plays when you enter the Antechamber of Ulduar) and "Invincible." They all inspire different moods for me, but the Grizzly Hills theme probably wins out by a nose simply because even today I'll still fly out there and listen to that and just relax.

The new Stormwind music. I forget what it's name is, but the first time I heard it just after 4.03a hit.....just. blew my mind. a version of the SW theme that is mourning the damage and loss of life?

While there's a lot of music in the current expansion that stirs emotion, the music of Nagrand still holds a special place in WoW for me.

For me I would absolutely say it's Nightsong. Absolutely love that song.

Lament of the Highborn aka Sylvanas' Song
Assault on New Avalon aka DK starting area music
and Nightsong (not sure where it shows up in game tho.
I'm also partial to the Durotar and Barens music, since that is where I leveled my first character. It's very nostalgic, even if it's not the most engaging score.

Only two themes that haven't been mentioned yet (but should have been):
Temple of the Moon:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAME_nxccpM
such a shame that Darnassus is so out of the way these days.
Arathi Highlands:

this amazing theme is pretty wasted on that zone, but it does get used in other places (Twilight Highlands for one, I think).

Wow that is good, and to think how many times I just blasted through the Temple of the Moon to use the portal or turn in a quest without really hearing the music.
Rheostatik Feb 16th 2011 11:18AM
Am I the only one who was awestruck the first time he heard the old Darnassus music?
But my all time favourites have be Nagrand and Karazhan.

And the soundtrack along to the Vortex Pinnancle, especially Breath of Al'Akir -

Overall though music in WoW has been great, as are the composers, particularly Bower and Uelmen.

I always love "Moonfall" which was the music for Auberdine before the Cataclysm. I nearly cried when it was gone and was replaced with a saddened refrain of this music for the Ruins of Auberdine. I killed the Elemental Lord to death that stands at the old Mist's Edge docs there for that!
I found you can hear the music if you go to Dire Maul (Eldre'thalas for us Nelfies out there!)
seanae_99 Feb 16th 2011 11:24AM
Definitely has to be Nightsong from the Cataclysm soundtrack for me. Absolutely love that song.
Defenders of Azeroth is second.

For me its the music in Scholozar basin. At several points the soft music is punctuated by some sort of flute or whistle that first plays a few notes then stops. Then later on it comes back and plays the same notes but extends the riff before fading, and then finally a third time when it finally resolves the tension. I absolutely love it! Every character I've levelled through northrend spends time questing in scholozar with my speakers cranked up, just so I can catch those few sweet notes.

Am I the only one who loved the Ulduar music?
It feels the most epic place in WoW to me

Sunaseni Feb 16th 2011 12:01PM
No, you aren't the only one. I always told my raid to shut up and turn on the music whenever we got into the Antechamber. Awesome, epic music for an awesome, epic raid.
Vinyl Feb 16th 2011 12:10PM
You are certainly not :) I cranked the music in Ulduar so high that I sometimes lost track of what was being said in vent >.> So imagine how jazzed I am that Thaurissan's Reach is PRETTY MUCH ULDUAR MUSIC so you can cruise in Ironforge and have that epicness blasting your ears.
Xantenise Feb 16th 2011 11:57AM
Ruins of Auberdine, Grizzly Hills and Storm Peaks.

The "dead" music played when you're a ghost. It's the same music you hear inside the Karazhan Crypts. Combine that music with an empty zone filled with bones, claustrophobic crypt rooms and the underwater Upside-Down Sinners chamber, and my hair stands on end every time. Very freaky! I kinda wish they'd do something with that zone, but then again it's so much more creepy being completely empty and devoid of players.
Mayhew Feb 16th 2011 4:24PM
I know that Dire Maul also had that same music. I'm not sure if it was all the wings or not, but DM West definitely had it.
Maccabeus Feb 16th 2011 12:28PM
All the music in Howling Fjord and Grizzly Hills. It will always remind me if my adventures in Northrend.
