Upcoming healer changes

The two big things to come out of this are:
- Power Word: Shield cost is going up by 33%. This nerfs disc priests.
- Shaman's Purification now increases healing effectiveness by 25%, up from 10%.
NethaeraSince the release of patch 4.0.6, we've been keeping an eye on healers and how they are performing and are currently in the process of making some additional adjustments.
Priests
The cost of Power Word: Shield is being increased by 33%. While we wanted Discipline priests to be able to utilize this spell more often and with better results, we also did not want it to be the main spell (and often the only spell) used while in groups. We don't find this to be a particularly compelling playstyle and have found that it encourages players to avoid using other spells such as Penance. We believe that using a shield in a tight moment is totally appropriate, but we don't want it to be incredibly efficient to do so with more frequency than that.
We realize that by making Power Word: Shield slightly more expensive for Discipline priests to cast that it might cause Holy priests to avoid using it. To that end, we are adding mana savings into the Body and Soul talent. The tooltip will not reflect this change until a future patch, however. Ideally, Holy priests should not notice much of a change to the Power Word: Shield costs.
Shaman
We are also applying a hotfix for Purification for the Restoration shaman passive from 10% to 25%. We think that shaman healing per second is not as competitive with other healers and while we hoped to bring down Holy priest and Holy paladins (in particular) in 4.0.6, which we did, shaman still appear to be behind. In this case, it is simply easier to buff Restoration shaman rather than nerf everyone else or rebalance the encounters.
In Addition - Restoration Druids and Restoration Shaman
We agree with the sentiment among some players that Restoration druids and Restoration shaman are lacking in the healing cooldown department. The shaman buff and Power Word: Shield adjustment above should bring all healers reasonably close in terms of throughput. The decision on who to bring then might end up being dictated by the strong cooldowns offered by paladins or priests. This isn't the kind of thing we can address via a hotix, but it is something we are looking at for the next major content patch.
As always, we appreciate your continued constructive feedback and will do our best to keep you informed of ongoing developments.

And finally, Nethaera says on the ETA of the changes:
NethaeraWe anticipate having these in relatively soon (possibly as soon as sometime today). We'll do our best to let you know once they're in and we'll be updating the notes on the Hotfix thread as well.

I'm glad that Body and Soul will offset the cost increase... I love my personal (and shareable!) sprint/block. =)

Saw the headline and I got worried that pallies were being nerded--again.

*Nerfed. Stupid auto-correct.

I dont think paladins have any reasons to complain about healing being nerfed - which it didnt get on patch. If you want more "in-depth" go look at http://stateofdps.com/index.php?raid=25N&samples=200&spec=healer

I play both Holy Pally and Resto Shaman and I felt that the nerfs pallies got in 4.0.6 was warranted.
Was I happy about the nerfs? Hell no.
Was Holy Pally OP before the nerfs? Very much so.
Did we deserve the nerfs? No question.
Although, I have to say that a buff to make shaman healers on par with paladins is a lot better than another nerf to make paladins on par with shamans

Good job, other Jeff. Keeping the first on his toes, I see.

Charts and graphs and "omgyourestillop"! Oh My!
See, I don't feel OP. It feels like I have to struggle like mad to be adequate. That HL/DL/FL mana cost increase hurt me a lot.

The way you feel about your anecdotal experiences is not actually a good counter for statistical data. (unless we're discussing epicness and fun-factor, but we're not, this is a numbers debate.)

I find the PW:S nerf to be pretty disheartening. Pre-patch, it wasn't even worth using other than for the rapture proc. Its finally in a place where its functional again, and now this. Good disc healing still required a nice mix of spell usage, and the cost of PW:S was high enough that spamming it still wasn't feasible. Now I wonder if it will even be effective to use for the mana return.
/sigh
DancePuppets Feb 16th 2011 1:39PM
I kept with the "spell-weaving" approach since 4.0.6, but apparently the best way to top meters as a Disc priest these days is spamming PW:Shield, which I assume is why it's being nerfed. The problem I see is much the same as yours though, with the loss of mana-regen that Disc priests had in their favour against the sheer throughput that Holy can bring to a fight.
LynMars Feb 16th 2011 3:23PM
Whoever these priests are that keep trying to heal only with shield and screwing things up for the rest of us need to have meters forcibly uninstalled from their computers. And learn to use the many fun spells we have in our toolbox to keep the party healthy. -_-
I've been playing Disc since Classic, so it's still far, far better than where it was before, but this yo-yo'ing between being OK and nerfed to frustration is getting old.
Velanna Feb 16th 2011 5:26PM
Nerfing PW:S...AGAIN, is to nerf a disc priest's signature spell. The description states "Uses magic to shield allies from taking damage as well as heal their wounds." Should they be able to spam it, no. But to reduce it's effectiveness to the point that it may become avoided due to mana cost is to turn disc priests into holy priests with a different name.
WaterRouge Feb 16th 2011 1:24PM
Thank goodness for the increase in healing output for my water shammy. Been feeling like my heals just weren't doing enough and my mana bar has paid for it.
For those of you who may be like "But is 15% increase really THAT noticeable/important?" Yes, absolutely yes. If you're asking that though you're probably not playing a Cata healer.
Ice Feb 16th 2011 1:39PM
Finally, FINALLY buffs to shamans. I was worried our healing was rock bottom only because we bring mana-tide. I'm glad this is not the case.
Heck, people were blunt and told me that shamans are way too low on "healing meters" so they would rather bring priests and paladins to raid even as semi-hardcore raids because why bring healer that heals less than others and their buffs being brought by others (6% sp and time warp eh..). I was watching and trying to learn how does those WoL toppers heal as shamans and I was kinda confused - most of their healing was healing rain and chain heal.. something I hardly do because of the mana cost and very situational them being.
