Forrest, I don't have numbers. I just went to warcraft census, and I can only see class numbers, not melee v. ranged breakdown. However, my statement comes more from experience. Unless you are a strictly ranged dps class, you tend to be melee for leveling. I never really understood this, as I leveled both a boomkin and an ele shaman, and found them both easier than their melee counterparts. Many people also level as tanks, which is also a melee position. That logic, along with the fact that in running pug raids I've turned down about 9^1billion death knight dps'ers tells me that they are the most ubiquitous. Also, there are way more dps than there are tanks and heals, one can surmise that simply from the dungeon finder. And by "way more," i mean that dps is at least 2x more popular than tanks or healers, and likely a lot more popular. Which means if you make a pie chart of ranged v. melee, ranged or melee will still be more popular than tank or heals.Combine the 2, I deduce melee is the most popular. Maybe it's a bias because there always seems like there is too much melee and not enough of anything else, but that's why i think that.
